Sukhpal Singh Khaira (born 13 January 1965) is an Indian politician serving as Indian National Congress MLA from Bholath constituency as his third term. He was the leader of opposition in Punjab Legislative Assembly during July 2017 to July 2018. He is the chairman of All India Kisan Congress since July 2022.
He started his political career with Youth Congress. In 1997,He became the vice-president of Punjab Youth Congress. He got political legacy from his father Sukhjinder Singh Khaira,a stalwart Akali leader. He is the national chairman of Kisan and Khet Mazdoor Congress.
Sukhpal Singh Khaira is the son of veteran Akali leader and former Punjab education minister Sukhjinder Singh Khaira. [4] [5]
He did his schooling from Bishop Cotton School,Shimla.
In 1994,he was elected as a member of panchayat from Ramgarh village of Kapurthala district. [6] In 1997,he joined the Youth congress and was appointed vice-president of Punjab Youth Congress. [6] In 1999,Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee appointed him as secretary of their organisation. [6] In 2005 he was appointed president of Kapurthala district's Congress committee (2005 to 2010). [6] In 2006,he became elected director of Central Cooperative Bank,Kapurthala. [6]
In 2007 he was elected as Member of Legislative Assembly from Bholath till 2012 under the Congress party,Kapurthala,Punjab after two failed attempts in 1997 and 2002. [7] In 2009 he was appointed Punjab Congress Spokesperson and was reappointed in 2013. He later resigned in 2014 from the post,owning moral responsibility for the "poor performance" of the party in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls in the state. [8] [9]
On 25 December Khaira announced his resignation from Congress party and declared his unification with the Aam Aadmi Party. [10]
On 11 March 2017,Khaira won the Member of Legislative Assembly elections second time after failing in 2012 in his constituency of Bholath,however this time acting under the Aam Aadmi Party.
In 2018 he was Suspended from AAP for anti party activities. He formed Punjab Democratic Alliance [11] On 6 January 2019,Khaira left Aam Aadmi Party.
On 8 January 2019,he formed a new political party,Punjab Ekta Party. [12] On 16 March 2019,Punjab Democratic Alliance announced his candidacy from Bathinda parliamentary constituency. [13]
On 25 April 2019 he resigned from Punjab Legislative Assembly. [14] On 23 May 2019,he lost from the Bathinda Lok Sabha Constituency. [15]
On 10 March,Khaira won the Member of Legislative Assembly election third time from Bholath,this time as an Indian National Congress candidate. [16] [17]
In July 2022,Khaira was appointed as the chairman of the All India Kisan Congress. [18] [19]
In 2024 general elections,Khaira contested from Sangrur Lok Sabha seat where he was defeated by Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer of Aam Aadmi Party by a margin of 172560 votes. [20]
Sukhpal Singh Khaira admitted to meeting Arvind Kejriwal in early 2015. [21] According to media the meeting was in pretext to join AAP Punjab,but prominent leaders of AAP Punjab blocked the entry of Khaira into the Party. [22] [23] In 2018,he was removed as the Leader of Opposition of the Punjab assembly,because of his problems with the party. [24]
Allegations were made on Khaira that he was trying to protect trans-border Heroin smuggler Gurdev Singh,he rubbished the allegations and invited the enquiry. [25] However,in April 2018,Justice Mehtab Singh Gill Panel,constituted by Govt.,declared that all 17 cases against Sukhpal Singh Khaira were falsely registered and demanded action against police officers. Bhagwant Singh Mann,better known by his stage name "Jugnu",is an Indian politician,social worker,former comedian,singer and actor who is currently serving as the 17th Chief minister of Punjab since 2022. He represents the Dhuri Assembly constituency in the Punjab Legislative Assembly since 2022 and is also serving as the state convener of Aam Aadmi Party,Punjab since 2019. Previously,he was a member of the Lok Sabha from Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency from 2014 to 2022.

Politics in reorganised present-day Punjab is dominated by mainly three parties –Indian National Congress,Aam Aadmi Party and Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal). Since 1967,Chief Minister of Punjab has been predominantly from Jat Sikh community despite its 21 percent state population. Exceptions are Giani Zail Singh,the Chief Minister of Punjab from 17 March 1972 to 30 April 1977 belonging to Ramgarhia community that has population of 6 percent and is a part of significant OBC community having population of 31.3 percent in the state and Charanjit Singh Channi who held the position for 111 days from 20 September 2021 to 16 March 2022 and was from Scheduled Caste(Dalit) who have 32 percent population in the state. Other prominent party is Bahujan Samaj Party especially in Doaba region founded by Kanshi Ram of Rupnagar district. In 1992 BSP won 9 seats Vidhan Sabha elections. Also BSP won 3 lok sabha seats from Punjab in 1996 general elections and only Garhshanker seat in 1997 Vidhan Sabha elections. Communist parties too have some influence in the Malwa area. In the 2014 general elections,the first-time contesting Aam Aadmi Party got 4 out of 13 seats in Punjab by winning 34 of the total 117 assembly segments,coming second in 7,third in 73 and fourth in the rest 3 segments. The support for the Aam Aadmi Party increased later in Punjab. The current Government was elected in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections and the AAP won 92 out of 117 Assembly seats with Bhagwant Mann as the Chief Minister. The Congress flows down to get only 18 seats.

Sukhpal Khaira won this seat on Aam Aadmi Party party ticket in 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly election but later on created a new party Punjab Ekta Party in 2019,and later,in June 2021,he joined the Indian National Congress.

In the 2022 Legislative Assembly elections,he again won the Barnala constituency by a huge margin by securing almost 50% of the votes polled. He held various important portfolios in the Mann ministry,like the Minister of the Department of Higher Education &Languages,Governance Reforms,Sports &Youth Services,Science Technology &Environment and Printing &Stationery. He is also the in-charge of the Youth Wing of the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab.
Harpal Singh Cheema is an Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Dirba Assembly constituency located in Sangrur District,Punjab. In March 2022,he became first BobA to be a finance minister of Punjab. He joined the Aam Aadmi Party just before the 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly election. He contested and won the election from Dirba Assembly constituency against a popular Punjabi Kabbadi player Gulzar Singh Moonak from Shiromani Akali Dal and Ajaib Singh Ratolan from Indian National Congress. In July 2018 he was appointed leader of opposition of Punjab Legislative Assembly.
