Sunset Harbor is an unincorporated community on the banks of the Lockwood Folly River and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in Brunswick County, North Carolina. It is bordered by the city limits of Oak Island and is situated across the river from Varnamtown. By road, the community can only be accessed by Sunset Harbor Road, which feeds into North Carolina Highway 211.
Brunswick County is the southernmost county in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2010 census, the population was 107,431. As its population was only 73,143 in 2000, that makes it one of the fastest growing counties in the state, at a nominal growth rate of about 47% in ten years, with much of the growth centered in the eastern section of the county, the suburbs of Wilmington such as Leland, Belville and Southport. With a 2018 estimated population of 136,744 the county is the 4th fastest growing in the country. The county seat is Bolivia, which at a population of around 150 people is among the least populous county seats in the state.

Carpenter is a small unincorporated community located in western Wake County, North Carolina. Carpenter is centered on the intersection of Carpenter-Upchurch Road and Morrisville-Carpenter Road just east of North Carolina Highway 55. Most of Carpenter has been annexed by the Town of Cary. The community was named for William Carpenter, the first settler in the area in 1865. Carpenter was a stop on the former Durham and Southern Railway.
Bird Island is approximately 1,300 acres (5.3 km2) adjacent to the coastal resort town of Sunset Beach, North Carolina, USA. Sunset Beach is on a barrier island and is the southernmost town in North Carolina. Bird Island can be reached by walking along the seashore toward the South Carolina border. Due to the contour of the Atlantic Coast at this point, the direction of travel to Bird Island is approximately West-Southwest. Previously, Bird Island was separated from Sunset Beach by a tidal creek that could be easily crossed only at low tide. Accretion of ocean sand has gradually filled in the tidal creek so that two separate islands became one.
Elwell Ferry is an inland cable ferry which has operated since 1905 on Elwell Ferry Road between NC Highway 53 and NC Highway 87, crossing the Cape Fear River and connecting the communities of Carvers Creek and Kelly in Bladen County, North Carolina.
The Waccamaw River Heritage Preserve is a 5,347-acre (21.64 km2), 30-mile (48 km) stretch of protected wetland that follows the Waccamaw River in northeastern Horry County, South Carolina.

Lockwood Folly River or Lockwood's Folly River is a short tidal river in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. Waters from the Green Swamp drain into the river near Supply and flow southward to empty into the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway near Sunset Harbor. The Lockwood Folly Country Club in Varnamtown takes its name from the river.
