Tajikistan competed in the Summer Olympic Games as an independent nation for the first time at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, United States. Previously, Tajik athletes competed for the Unified Team at the 1992 Summer Olympics.

The nation has also competed at the Winter Olympics since 2002. To date, Andrei Drygin is one of two people ever to have represented Tajikistan at the Winter Olympic Games, being his country's sole competitor in 2002, 2006, and 2010.
The National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Tajikistan (NOC) is a sports governing body that was established in 1992 to manage Tajikistan's activities in relation to the Olympics. The office of the NOC is located in the center of the city, on Aini Street in Dushanbe.

Flagbearer Khayrullo Abdurahimov, however, does not appear on his event's official scoresheet, so he seems to not have been active in the Paralympics.
Tajikistan sent a delegation to compete at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada from 12–28 February 2010. The nation was participating in its third Winter Olympic Games. The Tajikistani delegation consisted of a single athlete: alpine skier Andrei Drygin. Drygin's best finish in any of his events was 44th in the super-G.
Tajikistan made its Paralympic Games début at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, with a single representative in powerlifting. Competing in the men's up to 60 kg category, Odinaev lifted 147.5 kg, finishing 9th out of 16. In 2008, Tajikistan was again represented by a single powerlifter, this time a woman: Zaytuna Roziqova, in the up to 48 kg category. She failed to correctly lift any weight and record a mark.

Tajikistan competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. This was the nation's fifth consecutive appearance at the Olympics. The National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Tajikistan sent the nation's largest delegation to the Games. A total of 16 athletes, 13 men and 3 women, competed in 7 sports. Six of these athletes had competed in Beijing, including judoka Rasul Boqiev and freestyle wrestler Yusup Abdusalomov, who both won Tajikistan's first ever Olympic medals.
Wrestling at the 2012 Summer Olympics were held between 5 and 12 August, the final day of the Games, at ExCeL London. It was split into two disciplines, Freestyle and Greco-Roman which were further divided into different weight categories. Men competed in both disciplines whereas women only took part in the freestyle events, with 18 gold medals awarded. Wrestling has been contested at every modern Summer Olympic Games, except Paris 1900.

At the last edition in Incheon, Tajikistan captured a gold, a silver, and 3 bronze medals, made the country standing in 23rd position, as their best ranking since the first occasion.
