The Entrance (18 January 1992) The Entrance had been the closest contest at the 1991 election, decided by only 116 votes. Confusion over votes using ticks and crosses probably deprived Labor of victory on polling day, but the Court of Disputed Returns eventually overturned the results over problems with the issue of absent votes, a significant number of The Entrance voters having incorrectly been given ballot papers for neighbouring Gosford. The Greiner government, already one seat short of a majority, announced the by-election for 18 January 1992 after a 15 day campaign at the height of the summer holidays. In the end, the swing was an average 4.9%, delivering the seat to Labor, further denting the Greiner government hold on office, and directly leading to the 'Metherell Crisis' that followed.
