The First Tree is a 2017 third-person exploration adventure game developed and published by David Wehle. The game follows a mother fox as she searches for her lost cubs, while the voices of a human couple are overlaid over the fox's journey. The game's visuals and story received both praise and criticism from video game reviewers, while its atmosphere and controls were generally considered calming and clunky, respectively.
The First Tree's narrative is told "through voice overs and environmental storytelling." [1] The game simultaneously tells two stories: it depicts a fox searching for her lost kits visually. Meanwhile, a conversation between the human couple Joseph and Rachel is overlaid. [2] [3] Joseph relays to Rachel his desire to have connected with his father more meaningfully. [4] Toward the end of the game, the perspective switches to Joseph's first-person point of view. [5]
A third-person "exploration" game, The First Tree has players taking control of a fox. Joe Donnelly of PC Gamer referred to the game as a "walking" and "bounding" simulator, as players follow the fox as she gallops through a natural landscape. [6] There are also some puzzle and platforming elements to the game. [7]
The game was largely produced by Utah-based [8] developer David Wehle. [3] Wehle previously developed and released Home is Where One Stars in 2015, though it did not garner much attention or profit. [9] However, it did result in Wehle being hired as a technical artist for the VR experience developer The VOID. [9] In his spare time, he developed and marketed The First Tree. [9] Wehle, was inspired by Journey , Gone Home , and Firewatch , as well as the novel The Road . [10] [11] Wehle had no coding knowledge entering the development of The First Tree. [12] He intended for players to complete the game in 1–2 hours. [10]
A deeply personal game for Wehle, the death of his father inspired him to make the game, [12] as did the birth of his own son. [11] He also provided the voice for Joseph. [12] A fox was chosen for the game "mostly [for] the visual impact of a beautiful red-orange creature in front of a green forest," though Wehle also noted some personal connections to his wife's family name and fox-themed cake toppers she crafted for their wedding. [12] [1]
In regards to the game's visual design, The First Tree "uses a very simple, almost papercraft-inspired design for foliage and even pentagonal lens flares that give everything a very surreal aesthetic." [10] The game was released in the English-language only, but a "fan translation system" was included, allowing players to work on additional translations. [10] The game underwent the Steam Greenlight process. [13]
The first trailer for the game was released in July 2016. [2]
The game was released on September 14, 2017, for Windows and Mac. On November 30, 2018, the game received a console release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game was also released onto iOS on November 18, 2020.

Reception on the game was mixed in regards to its story and visuals, though reviewers were generally critical of the game's controls which were noted to be "clunky" or "stiff". [4]
PC Gamer's Donnelly wrote that "Against the deluge of time-consuming, mentally-demanding games floating around at the moment, The First Tree is a nice change of pace." [6] Corey Plante of Inverse wrote that Wehle's voice acting has an "earnestness [that] comes through in the gameplay," calling his voice "mellow and contemplative, conveying a sense of gravity and personal depth." [12] Rebecca Stow of Push Square gave the game's PS4 version an 8/10 rating, praising its voice acting and writing that "The First Tree effortlessly intertwines fluid gameplay, silky visuals, and two heart-breaking stories." Stow noted the game's limited controls and gameplay, but added that "the beautiful graphics have a calming, profound style and this is the game's focus rather than action-packed gameplay." [18] Reviewing a Japanese translation of the game, Yoshiki Chiba of IGN gave the game an 8.4/10, complimenting its atmosphere and music. [5] Writing for Kotaku , Heather Alexandra largely praised the game. They wrote that "the massive forest landscape is full of frosted peaks and reflected sunlight. The game also has a wonderful grasp of color." [4] Alexandra added, "as I played The First Tree, I fell into a pensive trance. I think it made me feel sad, but it's hard to say. What I do know is that I felt a genuine longing for… something: for the quiet of those forests, for the clarity of mind that the narrator seemed to have." [4]
Conversely, Kotaku's Chloe Spencer was heavily critical of the game. Spencer wrote that "what could be a powerful story-driven narrative is marred by unnecessarily complicated platforming, ill-fitting dialogue, and jarring pacing." Spencer also noticed the sad nature of both story lines in the game, adding that "the game turns into one brutal moment after another, conveying not that pain is a part of life, but that life sucks, everything is pointless, and then you die. The First Tree lacks a balanced look at the realities of life, seeming to be more of a depressing, slow slog rather an in-depth look at loss." [3] John Walker of Rock Paper Shotgun also panned the game, criticizing its "generic landscapes", the writing and characterization of its human characters, and the game's controls. Walker wrote that the game is "like an exercise in narcissism and emotional manipulation," and described it as "grimly dishonest in how it attempts to force pathos in the player as this moany man moans while showing you pictures of dead cute baby animals." [19]
Catherine Dellosa of Pocket Gamer gave the game's iOS version a 4.5/5 star review. Dellosa praised the game's voice acting, soundtrack, and visual sense of wonder, writing that the game is "relaxing physically" and invites players to self-reflect personally. [17] Dellosa did note the game is graphically "clunky" at times. [17]
Wario is a character in Nintendo's Mario franchise that was designed as an archnemesis to Mario. Wario first appeared as the main antagonist and final boss in the 1992 Game Boy game Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. His name is a portmanteau of the name Mario and the Japanese word warui, meaning "bad". He is usually portrayed as a greedy treasure hunter who routinely loses the treasure or artifacts he ultimately finds. Since his debut, he has appeared in the majority of Mario video games. Hiroji Kiyotake designed Wario, and Charles Martinet voiced the character from 1993 to 2023.
Super Mario 64 is a 1996 platform game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It was released in Japan and North America in 1996 and PAL regions in 1997. It is the first Super Mario game to feature 3D gameplay, combining traditional Super Mario gameplay, visual style, and characters in a large open world. In the game, Bowser, the primary antagonist of the Super Mario franchise, invades Princess Peach's castle and hides the castle's sources of protection, the Power Stars, in many different worlds inside magical paintings. As Mario, the player collects Power Stars to unlock enough of Princess Peach's castle to get to Bowser and rescue Princess Peach.
Donkey Kong Country is a 1994 platform game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It is a reboot of Nintendo's Donkey Kong franchise and follows the gorilla Donkey Kong and his nephew Diddy Kong as they set out to recover their stolen banana hoard from the crocodile King K. Rool and his army, the Kremlings. The single-player traverses 40 side-scrolling levels as they jump between platforms and avoid obstacles. They collect items, ride minecarts and animals, defeat enemies and bosses, and find secret bonus stages. In multiplayer modes, two players work cooperatively or race each other.
Donkey Kong 64 is a 1999 platform game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It is the only Donkey Kong game to feature 3D gameplay. As the gorilla Donkey Kong, the player explores themed levels to collect items and rescue his kidnapped family members from King K. Rool. The player completes minigames and puzzles as five playable Kong characters—each with their own special abilities—to receive bananas and other collectibles. In multiplayer modes, up to four players can compete in deathmatch and last man standing games.
Sonic Adventure 2 is a 2001 platform game developed by Sonic Team USA and published by Sega for the Dreamcast. It features two good-vs-evil stories: Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, and Knuckles the Echidna attempt to save the world, while Shadow the Hedgehog, Doctor Eggman, and Rouge the Bat attempt to conquer it. The stories are divided into three gameplay styles: fast-paced platforming for Sonic and Shadow, multidirectional shooting for Tails and Eggman, and action-adventure exploration for Knuckles and Rouge. Like previous Sonic the Hedgehog games, the player completes levels while collecting rings and defeating enemies. Outside the main gameplay, they can interact with Chao, a virtual pet, and compete in multiplayer battles.

Star Fox Adventures is a 2002 action-adventure game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo. It began as essentially two separate projects that were in development in conjunction with each other: A proposed action adventure sequel to Star Fox 64 that began development within Nintendo EAD at Kyoto, and Dinosaur Planet, an original property created by Rare that was in development since 1997. Nintendo producer Shigeru Miyamoto convinced Rare to merge the two projects, and also shift development forward one hardware generation to the GameCube, leaving the game’s initial planned release on the Nintendo 64 cancelled.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star is a 2012 role-playing video game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS. Following Super Paper Mario (2007), it is the fourth installment in the Paper Mario series and part of the larger Mario franchise; it is the first game in the series released on a handheld console. In the game, the protagonist Mario and a new ally named Kersti travel across the Mushroom Kingdom to retrieve the six Royal Stickers scattered by Bowser. The game was released in November 2012 in North America and December 2012 overseas.
Game & Wario is a 2013 party video game developed by Nintendo and Intelligent Systems and published for the Wii U console, named after LCD Game & Watch titles. It is the eighth installment in the WarioWare series and part of the larger Mario franchise. The story stars Wario and his friends, who take advantage of a newly released video game console with two separate screens by making games for monetary gain. Game & Wario consists of 16 minigames that exclusively utilize the Wii U GamePad and its functions. Additional modes and collectibles are also unlockable. The majority of the minigames are single-player, although some are designed for multiplayer only.

OneShot is a puzzle-adventure game developed by the indie studio Future Cat and published by Degica. Based on a free version made in 2014, it was released for Windows on December 8, 2016. Wheels of Aurelia is a 2016 visual novel and adventure video game that was developed and published by Italian studio Santa Ragione. It was released worldwide in September 2016 for Linux, Microsoft Windows, and OS X; in October 2016 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One; October 2017 on iOS and Android; and November 2017 for the Nintendo Switch. Its story is set in 1978 Italy and tells the story of Lella who drives along the Italian motorway Via Aurelia alongside one or many companions; commenting on issues such as single parenthood, fascism, and the Mafia.
My Time at Portia is a 2019 farm life sim role-playing video game developed by Chinese studio Pathea Games and published by Team17. It was released on 15 January 2019 for Windows and the release on the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Android, iOS and macOS followed suit. It has some similarities to other farm sims such as Stardew Valley. A sequel, My Time at Sandrock entered early access in 26 May 2022 and was fully released in 2 November 2023.
Islanders is a casual city-building game developed and published by German indie game studio Grizzly Games. It was initially released on Steam for Microsoft Windows on 4 April 2019, and support for macOS and Linux was added in June that year. A version for consoles was released for Nintendo Switch on 11 August 2021 and PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on 26 August 2021. This version was published by Coatsink, which announced it had acquired the franchise from Grizzly Games in May 2022.
The Longing is a 2020 point-and-click adventure game created by independent developer Studio Seufz. Set in an underground kingdom, the player controls the Shade, a creature tasked with watching over a sleeping king for 400 days. The Shade performs recreational activities, including reading and exploring, as it waits out the 400 days in real time. The in-game timer continues regardless of the player's actions but moves faster if the Shade performs certain actions inside its home, such as decorating the walls with drawings.
Felix the Reaper is a 2019 puzzle game developed by Kong Orange and published by Daedalic Entertainment. In each of the game's levels, players must navigate player character Felix through a series of spatial puzzles without coming into contact with the light of the sun, which requires players to manipulate the environment using various gameplay mechanics to provide pathways for Felix to reach the end of the level and fulfill his duties. Felix's goal in each scenario is to instigate deadly and often contrived accidents to claim a non-player character's life using elements within the level's environments.
Unsighted is a 2021 indie video game developed by Studio Pixel Punk and published by Humble Games for the Nintendo Switch, Windows, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PS4. The game is a Metroidvania adventure game in which the player and all non-player characters exist within a time limit, with the player required to find and allocate 'meteor dust' to characters to maintain their survival. The game was designed by Brazilian developers Fernanda Dias and Tiani Pixel, who cited the Metroid and Legend of Zelda series as influential to the design of the game. Upon release, Unsighted received generally favorable reviews, with critics praising the innovation of the game's use of time as a narrative and gameplay mechanic, its visual presentation, and combat.
