The Icee Company (also known as Western Icee and Icee USA) is an American beverage company located in La Vergne, Tennessee, United States. [1] Its flagship product is the Icee (stylized as ICEE), which is a frozen carbonated beverage available in fruit and soda flavors. Icee also produces other frozen beverages and Italian ice pops under the Icee and Slush Puppie brands. ICEE Bear, an animated polar bear, is the company's mascot.
The Icee Company was founded by Omar Knedlik, the inventor of the original Icee drink. It became the foundation for the Slurpee and other frozen machine drinks after several machines made by the company were purchased by 7-Eleven in 1965. It has been a division of J & J Snack Foods since 1988 and distributes products in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Australia, the United Kingdom, China, and the Middle East. [2]
The Icee was invented in 1958 by Omar Knedlik, a Dairy Queen owner in Coffeyville, Kansas. [3] The beverage was the result of faulty equipment in the Dairy Queen owned by Knedlik. [4] His soda machine broke and he began placing bottles of soda in the freezer to keep them cold. Knedlik began selling bottles of the soda which would instantly turn to slush once opened. [2] The frozen soda became popular with the customers of the establishment. [4]
The name Icee as well as the original company logo were developed by Ruth E. Taylor, a local artist and friend of Knedlik. [4] She developed the name "Icee", as well as the idea of the logo's icicles hanging from the block letters, which has remained unchanged. She thought of the Polar Bear, but the actual bear mascot had already been created by the Norsworthy-Mercer ad agency. The "Icee" word with the snow on it was designed by a Mitchell Company staff artist, Lonnie Williams, as part of a cup he designed.
Knedlik partnered with the John E Mitchell Company in Dallas to develop the machine, for which Knedlik received a patent in 1960. [2] The first machine was made from a car air conditioning unit. It worked by combining freezing water, carbon dioxide, and a flavor mix. [5] After five years, Knedlik's idea had become the iconic Icee Machine after drawing the attention of 7-Eleven. The convenience store chain purchased several machines and later changed the product name to Slurpee based on the slurping sound people make when drinking the beverage. [2]
The Mitchell Company instituted a two-tiered franchise plan involving "Developers" and "Subdevelopers". Essentially, the Developers and Subdevelopers both paid fees and rentals for the right to use specified numbers of Icee dispensers and for rights within exclusive territories to distribute the machines and to promote the sale of the Icee drink. By the mid-1960s, 300 Icee machines had been manufactured. [6]
J & J Snack Foods purchased The Icee Company in 1987. In December 2019, the company moved their headquarters from Ontario, California to La Vergne, Tennessee. [1]
The Icee Company has over 75,000 Icee machines across America serving over 300 million Icee servings per year. Some American McDonald's and Subway restaurants inside Walmart stores sell Icees. Burger King restaurants and Sam’s Club cafe locations in the US sell Icees and Icee Floats. In Mexico, Icee is widely available at department stores such as Walmart and inside movie theaters and convenience stores. Icee is also the primary frozen beverage sold in Wawa and Quick Chek, two convenience store chains in the Mid-Atlantic region of the US. Icee is available at Valero gas stations co-branded with their Corner Store marts (except for independently owned stores) as well as at most Rainforest Café locations.
In 2019, Icee expanded into the United Kingdom for the first time, by partnering with Vimto, a UK-based international soft drinks manufacturer. A Europe-wide contract to supply the Cineworld cinema chain quickly followed. In late 2019 / early 2020 another European-wide contract to supply Showcase Cinemas further expanded the brand across Europe.
In January 2020, Moose Toys partnered up with Icee’s Slush Puppie brand to make 3 Special Edition Slush Puppie-themed Shopkins and Mini Packs for Season 13 (Real Littles Season 2) of the Shopkins franchise. The same 4 Shopkins were re-released for Season 14 (or Real Littles Season 3).
In 2021, it was revealed that Moose Toys again partnered up with Icee to make Shopkins and Mini Packs based on the main Icee line of drinks, which will be released in October 2021. [7]

7-Eleven, Inc. is a Japanese-owned convenience store chain, headquartered in Irving, Texas. The chain was founded in 1927 as the Southland Ice Company, operating an ice house storefront in Dallas. Then-owned by Southland Corporation, the number of convenience stores expanded and were named Tote'm Stores between 1928 and 1946. Southland Corporation changed the stores' name to 7-Eleven in 1946, reflecting expanded hours of operation. Southland Corporation started franchising its stores in 1961; in 1973 Ito-Yokado, a Japanese supermarket chain, signed a franchisee agreement with Southland Corporation to develop 7-Eleven convenience stores in Japan. Operating the Japanese stores under Seven-Eleven Japan, Ito-Yokado acquired a 70% stake in Southland Corporation in 1991; as majority owner, it changed Southland Corporation's name to 7-Eleven, Inc. that same year, then expanded to 100% ownership in November 2005, making 7-Eleven, Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of Seven-Eleven Japan. Ito-Yokado reorganized its collective businesses as a holding company in 2005, Seven & I Holdings, with 7-Eleven, Inc. wholly held by Seven-Eleven Japan.
Surge is a citrus-flavored soft drink first produced in the 1990s by the Coca-Cola Company to compete with Pepsi's Mountain Dew. Surge was advertised as having a more "hardcore" edge, much like Mountain Dew's advertising at the time, in an attempt to lure customers away from Pepsi. It was originally launched in Norway as Urge in 1996, and was so popular that it was released in the United States as Surge in 1997. Lagging sales caused production to be ended in 2003 for most markets.

Omar S. Knedlik was an American inventor and businessman. He was best known as the inventor of the ICEE frozen drink. He was born and raised a poor farm boy in Barnes, Kansas in 1916. Knedlik was a World War II veteran who bought his first ice cream shop after the war. He owned several hotels before moving to Coffeyville, Kansas, where he became the owner of a Dairy Queen in the late-1950s. It was at this Dairy Queen that he developed the Icee machine. Knedlik did not have a soda fountain, so he served semi-frozen bottled soft drinks. He found that they were immensely popular, so he worked with a Dallas company to develop the ICEE machine. It took him five years to replicate the consistency in slushy soft drinks. In the mid-1960s, the first ICEE machines were sold in the United States.

Manzanita Sol is a brand of apple-flavored soft drinks owned by PepsiCo. It was created by two brothers, Ramon and Manuel Rodriguez Fonseca, who started Embotelladora El Sol after learning the trade from the father, a Spanish industrialist who arrived to Mexico in the 20th Century. The formula for Manzana Sol, a cider flavored drink, was registered in 1950, when the original factory was based in Mexico City's neighborhood of San Pedro de los Pinos, and later moved to Acoxpa 69, in Coapa. Sloche is a frozen beverage sold by the convenience store chain Couche-Tard, mostly in the province of Quebec, Canada. While it is similar in concept to the traditional Slush Puppie, Sloche has gathered much publicity through an aggressive marketing campaign. The oversized Sloche plastic cups are covered with humorous slogans such as: "No animal has tasted this product before you," and "A good source of crushed ice." Couche-Tard also used to sell gummy candies under the Sloche brand. Some of these candies had to be removed from the shelves after allegations that their concept art was racist.
NuGrape is a brand of grape-flavored soda pop. The NuGrape brand was created in 1906, first bottled in 1921, and by April 1933, The National NuGrape Company was founded in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1922, licensing rights were sold to the Olla Bottling Works in Olla, Louisiana where it was made and distributed for many years. NuGrape was followed up by the popular Sun Crest brand of soft drinks in 1938. In 1965, the National NuGrape Company introduced Kickapoo Joy Juice, a product based on Al Capp's Li'l Abner comic strip. All three brands were acquired in 1968 by The Moxie Company. In 1970, Moxie-Monarch-NuGrape discontinued domestic U.S. sales of Kickapoo Joy Juice.

The company is headquartered Cheltenham, Victoria, Australia, has over 600 staff, and distributes to over 50 countries. They are most known for their collectable minifigure toy lines "The Trash Pack" and "Shopkins", and their associated francises.
