The AllMusic review by Ron Wynn states that "it's loaded with great violin solos, as well as some unusual, intriguing arrangements and compositions". [2] The authors of The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings noted that the album was created shortly after the breakup of the Revolutionary Ensemble, and stated that it "is one of the few places in contemporary jazz where the direct and unassimilated influence of Cecil Taylor can be detected, and it remains strongly reminiscent of Cecil's Cafe Montmartre sessions. Jenkins is in stunningly good form, and his solo play on tributes to two modern saxophone players, 'Brax Stone' and 'Albert Ayler (His Life Was Too Short)', is as good as anything in his catalogue. Legend isn't the prettiest of recordings, but it has all the intensity Jenkins brings to live performance." [3]

The music was originally released in 1982 as Albert Ayler Quintet Live at Slug's Saloon volumes 1 and 2 on Base Records (Italy), DIW Records (Japan), and ESP-Disk (U.S.), and, over the years, was reissued by a variety of small labels under different titles. A CD containing both volumes, plus an additional track recorded at the same concert, was released by ESP-Disk with the title Slugs' Saloon. On the album, Ayler plays tenor saxophone, and is accompanied by his brother Donald Ayler on trumpet, Michel Samson on violin, Lewis Worrell on bass, and Ronald Shannon Jackson on drums.
Solo is a live album by violinist / composer Leroy Jenkins. It was recorded in October 1992 at the Contemporary Arts Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was released by Lovely Music in 1998. The album documents a solo concert that featured nine original compositions, some of which had appeared in his solo performances for years but were never previously recorded, plus pieces by Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane. This is Jenkins's second solo record, the first being Solo Concert.
