The Lovebites EP is the debut EP by Japanese power metal band Lovebites. The EP was released in Japan on May 24, 2017, by Victor Entertainment, in Europe on August 25, 2017, by JPU Records, and in North America by Sliptrick Records on August 31, 2017. It reached number 27 on the Oricon chart and number 40 on Billboard Japan .
Lovebites was formed in Tokyo, Japan in 2016 by musicians who were all previously in well-known and established bands. [1] From the very beginning, bassist and leader Miho knew she wanted to have English lyrics, and with vocalist Asami having studied abroad, three of the four songs on the EP are in English. [2] Two of them were composed and arranged in collaboration with Lightbringer keyboardist Mao. [3] Miho recorded her bass parts using an ESP AMAZE-ASM. [4] Asami revealed that because she was new to heavy metal music, she was a little lost while recording her vocals. [2]
Miho said that the EP was more of a demo to get the band signed, but the label liked it so much they had it properly mastered and released. [5] It was mixed by Mikko Karmila and mastered by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios in Helsinki, Finland. [1]
The Lovebites EP received a limited release of 3,000 copies in Japan on May 24, 2017, by Victor Entertainment. [3] It was released in the United Kingdom on August 25 by JPU Records and in North America by Sliptrick Records on August 31. [6]
All four of its songs were re-recorded with new arrangements for the band's first album released later in the year, Awakening from Abyss . [7]
Victor released a limited edition vinyl record version of the EP, titled Junpaku no Ikazuchi (純白の雷, "Pure White Thunder") in Japanese, on August 7, 2019, with new liner notes by Masanori Ito. [8] The songs were also given new Japanese titles; "Don't Bite the Dust" became "Zetsubō o Uchikudake!" (絶望を打ち砕け！, "Break the Despair!"), "The Apocalypse" was changed to "Shinpan no Hi" (審判の日, "Judgement Day"), "Scream for Me" became "Kyōran no Sakebi" (狂乱の叫び, "Frantic Scream"), and "Bravehearted" was changed to "Yūsha-tachi e no Sanka" (勇者たちへの讃歌, "Hymn to the Heroes"). Miho called "Don't Bite the Dust" the easiest song to listen to on the EP, with its melody balancing the twin guitars and Iron Maiden-like galloping rhythm. [10] It was influenced by and named after a supernatural ability from the Diamond Is Unbreakable arc of the manga and anime series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure . [1] Its ending features a two octave jump by Asami, which she had never tried before. [2]
"The Apocalypse" is the only song newly written for the EP. [10] When writing it, Miho wanted thrash metal guitar riffs like Sodom. [10] Its lyrics are about the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. [11] At the suggestion of the producer, Midori played a bottleneck guitar solo for the first time on the track after doing research that included watching Derek Trucks videos on YouTube. [2]
"Scream for Me" was composed by support guitarist and keyboardist Mi-Ya. Its lyricist, Dr. U, is an American male acquaintance of hers who lives in Japan. [12] For her bass parts on the track, Miho was thinking of Anthrax's song "Lone Justice". [10]
The final track "Bravehearted" is the band's only song with lyrics in Japanese. [10] Written by drummer Haruna, it is a new arrangement of an unreleased song by her and Miho's previous band Destrose. [13]

The Lovebites EP reached number 27 on the Oricon Albums Chart and stayed on the chart for four weeks. [14] It peaked at number 40 on Billboard Japan 's Hot Albums chart. [15]
Numerous musicians praised the EP, including Kiko Loureiro of Angra, Stratovarius vocalist Timo Kotipelto, and Blind Guardian's Hansi Kürsch. [16] Michael Weikath of Helloween said "What I consider the best about this material is that they construct a direct link to classic metal. And it is not sounding old fashioned, dusty or boring. It is fresh." [16]
Neo gave the EP a perfect rating, claiming it "would make Iron Maiden proud. LOVEBITES are metal stars in the making." [7]
Japanese music-focused website JaME wrote that although it is the band's debut release, the EP is clearly the work of professional musicians with years of experience. They cited "Scream for Me" as the heaviest track "where melodic riffing is side-lined in favour of chugging power chords and some spontaneous showboating." [17]

Japanese metal is heavy metal music from Japan. The country's first metal bands formed in the mid-to-late 1970s. The number of acts increased significantly in the next decade, but only a few saw their material released internationally, including Europe and North America with their pre-established metal bases. Domestic metal saw its commercial peak in Japan in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with the top acts selling millions of records. Many metal bands from the visual kei scene toured and gained recognition in the West in the 2000s. The 2010s saw a boom of all-female metal bands form and gain mainstream attention.
Mary's Blood was a Japanese all-female heavy metal band from Tokyo, formed in 2009 by four former members of Destrose. It consisted of vocalist Eye, drummer Mari, guitarist Saki and bassist Rio since 2012. After releasing three EPs as an independent band, they signed to Nippon Columbia for their first album, Countdown to Evolution (2014). Mary's Blood then switched to Victor Entertainment for the release of Bloody Palace (2015) and Fate (2016). They signed to Tokuma Japan Communications in 2018 and released three further studio albums, including their highest-charting, Confessions (2019). Mary's Blood began an indefinite hiatus on April 9, 2022.

Lovebites is a Japanese power metal band, formed in 2016 by former Destrose members Miho and Haruna. Its lineup currently consists of Haruna on drums, Midori and Miyako on guitar, Asami on vocals, and Fami on bass. After signing to Victor Entertainment, the group released both their debut EP and their first album in 2017, The Lovebites EP and Awakening from Abyss, before performing their first overseas concerts at the end of the year. With another EP and album released in 2018, Battle Against Damnation and Clockwork Immortality, Lovebites quickly garnered international attention and won that year's Metal Hammer Golden Gods Award for Best New Band. Following the releases of Electric Pentagram (2020) and Glory, Glory, to the World (2021), bassist Miho left the band in August 2021. After a year-long hiatus, Lovebites recruited Fami on bass and released Judgement Day, their fourth album, in February 2023. It is their highest-charting record to date, reaching number 5 on both the Oricon and Billboard Japan charts.

The album was released on October 25, 2017 in Japan by Victor Entertainment and in North America by Sliptrick Records, and in Europe two days later by JPU Records. It features a total of twelve songs, including re-recordings of those from their debut, The Lovebites EP. Awakening from Abyss reached number 18 on the Oricon chart and number 33 on Billboard Japan.
Clockwork Immortality is the second studio album by Japanese heavy metal band Lovebites. The album was released in Japan on December 5, 2018, by Victor Entertainment, and in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand two days later by Arising Empire. Destrose was a Japanese heavy metal band formed in 2007. The group remained an independent band their entire career and experienced frequent line-up changes until going on indefinite hiatus in 2015. Although considered pioneers of the Girls Metal Band Boom, Destrose never achieved commercial success and is best known for the subsequent bands later formed by its many members.

Neuf Neuf is the 22nd studio album by Japanese entertainer Miho Nakayama. Released through King Records on December 4, 2019, it was Nakayama's first studio release in 20 years after her 1999 album Manifesto. The album features four new songs and four self-covers. The first press limited edition release featured a cover painting by Ryōji Arai and a 2020 mini-calendar.

Nemophila is a Japanese heavy metal band formed in Tokyo in 2019. It consists of vocalist Mayu, guitarists Saki and Hazuki, bassist Haraguchi-san and drummer Tamu Murata. While independently releasing three singles between 2020 and 2021, Nemophila garnered a sizable multinational following online by uploading videos to YouTube. In June 2021, British record label JPU compiled the singles into the internationally released Oiran: Extended Edition. Nemophila released their debut studio album, Revive, in December 2021. Their most recent album, Seize the Fate, was released in December 2022.
"Sense" is the eighth single by Japanese rock band Band-Maid, released in Japan on October 27, 2021, by Pony Canyon. The song was used as the opening theme song for the anime Platinum End.

Midori Tatematsu is a Japanese heavy metal musician and fitness competitor. She is best known as a guitarist of the all-female band Lovebites since their founding in 2016. She was previously in the all-female band Gekijo Metalicche from 2013 to 2016. Midori began weight training in November 2021 during a hiatus in Lovebites' activities, and has since earned two silver medals in fitness competitions.
