Destrose was a Japanese heavy metal band formed in 2007. The group remained an independent band their entire career and experienced frequent line-up changes until going on indefinite hiatus in 2015. Although considered pioneers of the Girls Metal Band Boom, Destrose never achieved commercial success and is best known for the subsequent bands later formed by its many members. [1] [2]

History

2006–2012: Formation and singles

Guitarist and bandleader Mina formed a cover band named Destroya in 2006. She derived its name from Kiss' album Destroyer and the Godzilla character Destoroyah. [3] They performed songs by acts such as Led Zeppelin, Show-Ya, Pantera, Metallica and Manowar. [3] Mina then formed Destrose in 2007, including "rose" in the name to make it more feminine and in reference to Guns N' Roses. [4] [3] Destrose contributed the song "Headless Goddess" to the November 2008 compilation album Samurai Metal Vol. 4. [4] Eye, Eri, Kayo and guest drummer Mari all left the band on New Year's Eve 2008 and went on to form Mary's Blood at the end of 2009. [2] In January 2010, Destrose was the opening act for The Iron Maidens' Japanese tour. [2] [4] Before the release of their debut single "Hakai no Bara" on October 2, a second pressing was already decided due to excessive demand. [1] [5]

Destrose's song "Skykiller" was included on the January 15, 2011 compilation Iron Angel in preparation for their January 22 performance at the two-day Iron Angel Live event alongside other female metal acts such as Taia and Dazzle Vision. [6] The band recruited vocalist Nene and drummer Nana in March 2011. [5] Nene is also a fortuneteller and would give tarot card readings at concerts. [5] The single "Deathless Memories" was released on May 25 and reached number 8 on Oricon's independent singles chart. [7] Destrose announced they would temporary suspend activities after their September 25 concert at Meguro Live Station and that it would be their last with Nene, Nana and guitarist Satty. [8] Bassist Miho joined Destrose on November 11. [9] Marina joined about a week later and would become their longest serving vocalist. [2] [10]

Destrose resumed activities after the January 9, 2012 Women's Power 20th Anniversary concert, where they played alongside Show-Ya, Aldious and Babymetal. [11] [12] Two days later, drummer Haruna officially joined the band. [13] They released "Fenixx -To Revive-" on March 28, which reached number 7 on the indie chart. [11] [14] Its title is not only a reference to the band resuming, but also refers to Japan's recovery from the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. [15] Guitarist Narumi officially joined the band on June 1. [10] [16] The single "Nostphilia", coined by combining "nostalgia" and "philia", was released on November 14. [17]

2013–2015: Studio album and hiatus

The band's only studio album, the self-titled Destrose, was released on April 10, 2013 and supported by a fourteen-date Japanese tour that ended with their first one-man concert on June 1 at Meguro Live Station. [18] It reached number seven on Oricon's indie albums chart. [19] They were the only indie band at Show-Ya's female artists-only Naon no Yaon 2013 festival on April 29, which also included Scandal and Cyntia among others. [20] [21] Destrose performed in the US for the first time in early August as part of Tokyo in Tulsa. [22] The double A-side single "Rin / Maze" was released on November 13 and reached number 7 on the indie chart. [23] [24] To celebrate, they held a one-man concert at Shibuya O-West that same day, which was recorded and later released as a concert video. [25] Later that month, Mina announced she was taking a hiatus from live activities due to health issues. [20]

In March 2014, Destrose performed in the US again at Naka-Kon. [26] Soon after Marina left and formed Mardelas, with Lisa replacing her on April 25. [2] [27] The mini-album, The Prologue was released on September 24 and reached number 5 on the indie chart. [26] [28] Each member wrote a song for the record, which was supported by an eleven-date nationwide tour. [26] Drummer Haruna left the band after her farewell concert on December 24 at Meguro Rock-May-Kan due to her upcoming marriage. [29]

Risa☆Risa joined as drummer on January 30, 2015, and had her first Destrose concert the following day. [30] [31] In February, leader and sole constant member Mina left the band due to her ongoing health issues. [32] At the same time Lisa went on hiatus to treat vocal cord nodules, with Ibuki filling in as guest vocalist. [32] In May, Destrose announced that they would be going on indefinite hiatus in July. [33] They played their final concert, titled Persistence of Rose, at Meguro The Live Station in Tokyo on July 18, 2015. [33] [34]

Also in July 2015, Mina formed the steampunk metal band Fate Gear. [35] Their debut album A Light in the Black, released the following month, and their third album, 2018's 7 Years Ago, both include re-recordings of Destrose songs. [36] [37] Their 2019 EP Headless Goddess is composed almost entirely of re-recorded Destrose songs and features guest vocalists, including Ibuki. [38] In September 2015, Narumi and Risa☆Risa formed Disqualia with Ibuki. [39] Miho and Haruna formed Lovebites in 2016 and recorded the unreleased Destrose song "Bravehearted" for their 2017 debut, The Lovebites EP . [40]

Luna Sea is a Japanese rock band formed in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1986. Due to the use of makeup and costumes early in their career and their widespread popularity, they are considered one of the most successful and influential bands in the visual kei movement. Throughout the mid-1990s they used significantly less makeup, and after a one-year break in 1997, came back with a more mainstream alternative rock style and toned down their on-stage attire. They disbanded in 2000. In 2003, HMV Japan ranked Luna Sea at number 90 on their list of the 100 most important Japanese pop acts.

Siam Shade was a five-piece Japanese rock band, formed in Tokyo in 1991. The classic line-up of Hideki on vocals, Natchin on bass, Kazuma and Daita on guitar, and Jun-ji on drums broke onto the visual kei scene alongside a multitude of other artists in the early 1990s and enjoyed a decade of relative popularity before disbanding in early 2002. The members have reunited several times since 2007 for one-off concerts and short tours. Outside Japan, Siam Shade is best known for "1/3 no Junjō na Kanjō", which was the sixth ending theme of the Rurouni Kenshin anime. Daita's work on their song "Triptych" was named the 83rd best guitar instrumental by Young Guitar Magazine in 2019.

Zigzo is a Japanese rock supergroup that originally started activities in 1999 and disbanded in 2002. Each member came from a prominent band and they became very popular in the indies scene. They disbanded after their last show on March 16, 2002, reportedly due to musical differences.

Jun Onose, better known by his stage name J, is a Japanese musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. He is best known as bassist and co-founder of the rock band Luna Sea since 1986. After they disbanded in 2000 he focused on his solo career, for which he performs lead vocals and bass. He rejoined Luna Sea when they reunited in August 2010.

Kiyonobu Inoue, better known exclusively by his stage name Inoran, is a Japanese musician, singer and songwriter. He is best known as the rhythm guitarist and co-founder of the rock band Luna Sea since 1986. He started his solo career in 1997. Luna Sea disbanded in 2000, and he formed Fake? with Oblivion Dust vocalist Ken Lloyd a year later. In 2005 he left Fake? and founded Tourbillon with Luna Sea vocalist Ryuichi Kawamura and Hiroaki Hayama. He rejoined Luna Sea when they reunited in 2010, and in 2012 formed Muddy Apes with bassist Taka Hirose and guitarist Dean Tidey, both from Feeder, and 8otto's vocalist Maeson.

Vamps is a Japanese rock duo formed in 2008 by Hyde and K.A.Z. Only a year after their founding, Vamps performed its first international tour, ten dates in the United States, and in 2010 they went on their first world tour. Originally signed to Hyde's own record label Vamprose, every release the band has had to date has reached the top ten on the Oricon music chart. In 2013, the group changed labels to Universal Music Group's Delicious Deli Records and produced their worldwide debut release. After several tours and collaborations with Western acts, Vamps worked with outside producers and songwriters for the first time on the 2017 album Underworld before temporarily ceasing all activities at the end of that year.

D'erlanger is a Japanese rock band from Kyoto Prefecture, formed in 1983 by guitarist Cipher and bassist Seela. While they originally played speed and power metal, after recruiting drummer Tetsu and vocalist Kyo they switched to a punk rock sound for their debut album La Vie En Rose in 1989. Although it was on an indie label, it sold out and was reissued three times that year, earning them a major label record deal with BMG Japan the following year. They released Basilisk in March 1990 and it reached the top five on the charts. However, in December the group suddenly announced their disbandment.

Angelo is a Japanese visual kei rock supergroup, formed in 2006 by three members of Pierrot. Originally a trio of vocalist Kirito, bassist Kohta and drummer Takeo, guitarists Karyu (ex-D'espairsRay) and Giru (ex-Vidoll) joined in 2011. After 15 years and 13 studio albums, Angelo began an indefinite hiatus following two concerts at Yoyogi Daini Taiikukan on January 15 and 16, 2022.

Kamaitachi (かまいたち) was a Japanese visual kei punk rock band, formed in Kyoto and active from 1985 to 1991. Their album Hachamecha Kyou reached number 10 on the Oricon chart and was named one of the top albums from 1989 to 1998 in a 2004 issue of the music magazine Band Yarouze. They have performed several times since reuniting for a one-off performance in 2015.

Aldious is a Japanese heavy metal band from Osaka, formed in 2008 by guitarist Yoshi and vocalist Rami. After a few member changes, they released their debut EP Dear Slave the following year and soon after formed their own record label, Bright Star Records. A stabilized line-up including guitarist Toki, bassist Sawa and drummer Aruto was established by 2010. Their first album Deep Exceed (2010) reached the top 15 on the Oricon chart, as did their second Determination (2011). However, Rami announced she was leaving the group in June 2012 and new vocalist Re:NO joined Aldious just one month later. They produced their third album District Zero in 2013 and it became their highest-charting release to date, reaching number 7.

Japanese metal is heavy metal music from Japan. The country's first metal bands formed in the mid-to-late 1970s. The number of acts increased significantly in the next decade, but only a few saw their material released internationally, including Europe and North America with their pre-established metal bases. Domestic metal saw its commercial peak in Japan in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with the top acts selling millions of records. Many metal bands from the visual kei scene toured and gained recognition in the West in the 2000s. The 2010s saw a boom of all-female metal bands form and gain mainstream attention.

Jupiter is a Japanese visual kei symphonic power metal band, formed in 2013 by four of the five members of Versailles. After several personnel changes, guitarists Hizaki and Teru remain the only original members, with drummer Daisuke and vocalist Kuze completing the current lineup.

Cyntia was a Japanese heavy metal band formed in 2011. They are believed to have been the first act from the Girls Metal Band Boom to have signed to a major record label when they joined Victor Entertainment in 2013. Drummer and co-founder Kanoko left the group in April 2015, and the band moved to the Village Again Association label for their 2016 album Urban Night. Cyntia began an indefinite hiatus after January 13, 2018.

Fate Gear is a Japanese female heavy metal band from Tokyo, formed in 2015 by guitarist Mina.

Mary's Blood was a Japanese all-female heavy metal band from Tokyo, formed in 2009 by four former members of Destrose. It consisted of vocalist Eye, drummer Mari, guitarist Saki and bassist Rio since 2012. After releasing three EPs as an independent band, they signed to Nippon Columbia for their first album, Countdown to Evolution (2014). Mary's Blood then switched to Victor Entertainment for the release of Bloody Palace (2015) and Fate (2016). They signed to Tokuma Japan Communications in 2018 and released three further studio albums, including their highest-charting, Confessions (2019). Mary's Blood began an indefinite hiatus on April 9, 2022.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lovebites (band)</span> Japanese all-female power metal band

Lovebites is a Japanese power metal band, formed in 2016 by former Destrose members Miho and Haruna. Its lineup currently consists of Haruna on drums, Midori and Miyako on guitar, Asami on vocals, and Fami on bass. After signing to Victor Entertainment, the group released both their debut EP and their first album in 2017, The Lovebites EP and Awakening from Abyss, before performing their first overseas concerts at the end of the year. With another EP and album released in 2018, Battle Against Damnation and Clockwork Immortality, Lovebites quickly garnered international attention and won that year's Metal Hammer Golden Gods Award for Best New Band. Following the releases of Electric Pentagram (2020) and Glory, Glory, to the World (2021), bassist Miho left the band in August 2021. After a year-long hiatus, Lovebites recruited Fami on bass and released Judgement Day, their fourth album, in February 2023. It is their highest-charting record to date, reaching number 5 on both the Oricon and Billboard Japan charts.

Rami is a Japanese heavy metal singer and lyricist. She first rose to prominence as vocalist and co-founder of the all-female power metal band Aldious from 2008 to 2012. After a hiatus, she resumed musical activities in 2015 as the vocalist of the group Raglaia, before starting a solo career in 2016.

<i>Neuf Neuf</i> 2019 studio album by Miho Nakayama

Neuf Neuf is the 22nd studio album by Japanese entertainer Miho Nakayama. Released through King Records on December 4, 2019, it was Nakayama's first studio release in 20 years after her 1999 album Manifesto. The album features four new songs and four self-covers. The first press limited edition release featured a cover painting by Ryōji Arai and a 2020 mini-calendar.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Saki (musician)</span> Japanese musician (born 1990)

Saki is a Japanese heavy metal musician and songwriter. She is best known as guitarist of the all-female band Mary's Blood from 2012 until they began an indefinite hiatus in 2022. She is currently a member of the all-female band Nemophila and one-half of the duo Amahiru with Frédéric Leclercq. Saki has been sponsored by Killer Guitars for over ten years, and often uses custom-made Fascist models. In 2021, they released her signature model, the seven-string KG-Fascinator Seven the Empress.
