The Vandals formed in 1980 with an initial lineup of singer Steven Ronald "Stevo" Jensen, guitarist Jan Nils Ackermann, bassist Steve "Human" Pfauter, and drummer Joe Escalante. [1] Their debut EP Peace thru Vandalism was released in 1982 on Epitaph Records. Pfauter left the band in 1984 and Brent Turner played on their debut album When in Rome Do as the Vandals , released on National Trust Records in 1984. By the time of their second album Slippery When Ill (1989) on Restless Records Robbi Allen was playing bass and Jensen had been replaced by Dave Quackenbush. The album was country and western-influenced in a style the band called "cowpunk". More lineup changes ensued leaving Esclante and Quackenbush as the only remaining members, with Escalante now on bass guitar. A legal conflict ensued between Escalante and several of the ex-members, partially concerning Time Bomb Recordings' release of the compilation album Peace thru Vandalism / When in Rome Do as the Vandals . [2] [3] Escalante emerged with legal rights to The Vandals name and catalog.

A new incarnation of the Vandals coalesced with the addition of guitarist Warren Fitzgerald and drummer Josh Freese. This lineup would remain consistent for the rest of the band's career, with occasional substitutes filling in for Freese. In 1990 they released Fear of a Punk Planet through Triple X Records and filmed their first music video, for the song "Pizza Tran". In 1994 they released the live album and video Sweatin' to the Oldies . [4] In 1995 the band signed to Nitro Records, who would put out four of their next five albums. Live Fast, Diarrhea was released in 1995, followed by The Quickening in 1996. Also in 1996 Escalante and Fitzgerald founded Kung Fu Records, releasing a Vandals split single with Assorted Jelly Beans and the Christmas album Oi to the World! , and re-releasing Sweatin' to the Oldies in 1997. Nitro released Hitler Bad, Vandals Good in 1998, and Kung Fu released most of Slippery When Ill in 1999 as The Vandals Play Really Bad Original Country Tunes . 2000 saw a trio of releases, with Kung Fu putting out an anniversary edition of Fear of a Punk Planet and re-releasing Oi to the World! while Nitro released the new album Look What I Almost Stepped In...

With their Nitro contract fulfilled The Vandals moved to Kung Fu, [5] releasing Internet Dating Superstuds in 2002 and the live album and DVD Live at the House of Blues in 2003. The Shingo Japanese Remix Album was released in 2005, made up of remixes of Vandals songs by Japanese DJ Shingo Asari. The band's most recent release is the compilation BBC Sessions and Other Polished Turds , a digital-only release through iTunes and Kung Fu in 2008.

When in Rome Do as The Vandals 1984 studio album by The Vandals

When in Rome Do as The Vandals is the first album by the Huntington Beach punk rock band The Vandals, released in 1984 by National Trust Records, Its title is a play on the phrase "When in Rome, do as the Romans do", as the Vandals was also the name of a Germanic tribe which had invaded the Roman Empire and helped lead to its destruction. The album's cover played on this theme by showing the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in a state of destruction. It was the band's last recording with vocalist Stevo, who left the band shortly after due to personality conflicts with some of the other members.

Slippery When Ill 1989 studio album by The Vandals

Slippery When Ill is the second album by the Huntington Beach punk rock band The Vandals, released jointly in 1989 by Restless Records and Sticky Fingers Records. It was their first album to include Dave Quackenbush on vocals, who would remain the band's singer for the rest of their career. The album was something of a departure from the punk rock formula of their previous releases, fusing a country and western style with their humorous brand of punk. The result was a sound the band called "cow punk" which somewhat mocked the resurgence in popularity of country music in their native Huntington Beach. Two exceptions were the songs "Shi'ite Punk" and "(Illa Zilla) Lady Killa," which relied heavily on scratch boxes. The latter song was a re-recording of the song "Ladykiller" from the band's previous album When in Rome Do as the Vandals with slightly altered lyrics.

Fear of a Punk Planet 1990 studio album by The Vandals

Fear of a Punk Planet is the third album by the southern California punk rock band The Vandals, originally released in 1990 by Triple X Records. It was their first album to include the lineup of Dave Quackenbush, Warren Fitzgerald, Joe Escalante and Josh Freese, solidifying the band's roster after several years of fluctuation. This lineup would remain intact for the rest of the band's career, and for this reason Fear of a Punk Planet is considered by many fans to be the first proper album by the "new" Vandals. The album returned the band to their punk rock sound, after having played mostly in a country style on their previous album Slippery When Ill. The band would stick to a punk rock formula throughout the rest of their career. The album's title called to mind the rap album Fear of a Black Planet by Public Enemy, released that same year. It featured guest appearances by Dweezil and Moon Unit Zappa, Scott Thunes and Kelsey Grammer. An independent music video was filmed for the album's first track, "Pizza Tran."

It was a breakthrough release for the band, who would release three more albums on Nitro before moving to their own label Kung Fu Records in 2002.

Essentially a re-release of their 1989 album Slippery When Ill, it contains 8 of the 10 songs from that album along with 2 newer, previously unavailable songs. Part of the impetus for its release was that the original Slippery When Ill, long asked for by the band's fans, had become very rare and difficult to obtain due to the small size of the record labels it was originally released on. With their Kung Fu label now firmly established, the band was able to re-release this music from ten years earlier in their career.
