This Earth of Mankind (Indonesian : Bumi Manusia) is a 2019 Indonesian historical romance drama film, directed by Hanung Bramantyo and written by Salman Aristo. The film was adapted from 1980 novel of the same name by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. It starred Iqbaal Ramadhan, Mawar Eva de Jongh and Sha Ine Febriyanti.

Premise

This Earth of Mankind tells the story of Minke, a Javanese royal who falls in love with an Indo woman named Annelies, a daughter of Nyai Ontosoroh. [2]

Release

This Earth of Mankind had its premiere on 9 August 2019 in Surabaya, East Java, along with The Fugitive, another film adapted from Toer's novel of the same name. [3] The film was released theatrically in Indonesia on 15 August 2019. [4] It garnered 1,316,583 spectators during its theatrical run and grossed Rp52.6 million (US$3,355,943). [5]

Music

The song "Ibu Pertiwi" is used as the theme song of this film, performed by Iwan Fals, Once and Fiersa Besari. [6]

<i>This Earth of Mankind</i> Novel by Pramoedya Ananta Toer

This Earth of Mankind is the first book in Pramoedya Ananta Toer's epic quartet called Buru Quartet, first published by Hasta Mitra in 1980. The story is set at the end of the Dutch colonial rule and was written while Pramoedya was imprisoned on the political island prison of Buru in eastern Indonesia. The story was first narrated verbally to Pramoedya's fellow prisoners in 1973 because he did not get permission to write. The story spread through all the inmates until 1975 when Pramoedya was finally granted permission to write the detailed story.

"What a Friend We Have in Jesus" is a Christian hymn originally written by preacher Joseph M. Scriven as a poem in 1855 to comfort his mother, who was living in Ireland while he was in Canada. Scriven originally published the poem anonymously, and only received full credit for it in the 1880s. The tune to the hymn was composed by Charles Crozat Converse in 1868.

Ibu Pertiwi is a popular Indonesian patriotic song composed by Kamsidi Samsuddin in 1908. The song's lyrics are about Ibu Pertiwi, the national personification of Indonesia. It is normally sung by Indonesian children, elementary and secondary school students, or played during Indonesian Independence Day celebrations. In 2016 the Indonesian classical composer, Ananda Sukarlan, made a set of variations for piano based on this song.
