Thomasomys auricularis commonly known as the red Andean thomasomys [3] is a species of rodent in the genus Thomasomys found in the western Andes of southwestern Ecuador.
Although described in 1923 by Harold Elmer Anthony, [4] T. auricularis was treated as synonym or subspecies of Thomasomys pyrrhonotus until they were identified as a separate species in 2003 and officially recognized in Mammal Species of the World (2005). [5] [6]
Thomasomys auricularis is medium in size for its genus, with a head-body length of 138 to 155 millimetres (5.4 to 6.1 in). It is characterized by its relatively long tail, moderately long hindfoot, large skull, and large, inflated auditory bullae. Initially it was compared to the similar looking T. aureus and T. pyrrhonotus but has a few distinguishing characteristics. The skull is smaller than T. aureus. The tail is longer than T. pyrrhonotus. The auditory bullae is larger T. aureus but comparatively smaller than T. pyrrhonotus. [6]
The species occurs in Polylepis forest within the páramo and montane forests primarily in region 6 and 7 of Ecuador, at medium and high elevations of 2,330 to 4,000 metres (7,640 to 13,120 ft). [6]
There is a distinct population in Cañar that potentially may be a subspecies or separate species. [6]
Thomasomys auricularis is listed as data deficient by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in due to a lack of general knowledge.

In 1926, a subspecies was described from an Ecuadorian locality, Oryzomys auriventer nimbosus, and it was suggested that O. auriventer was closely related to O. albigularis. This proposal was formalized in 1961 by including O. auriventer within the species O. albigularis, but by 1976 O. auriventer was recognized again as a separate species. In 2006, Oryzomys albigularis and related species, including O. auriventer, were transferred to the new genus Nephelomys. Simultaneously, the former subspecies nimbosus was recognized as a separate species, Nephelomys nimbosus.
Transandinomys bolivaris, also known as the long-whiskered rice rat, is a rodent in the family Cricetidae. It is found in humid forest from northeastern Honduras to western Ecuador, up to 1,800 m (5,900 ft) above sea level. Since it was first described in 1901 from Ecuador, six scientific names have been introduced for it, but their common identity was not documented until 1998 and the species has long been known under the name Oryzomys bombycinus, described from Panama in 1912. The name Oryzomys bolivaris was used before it was moved to the new genus Transandinomys with Transandinomys talamancae in 2006.

Nephelomys moerex is a species of rodent in the genus Nephelomys of family Cricetidae. The type locality is at Mindo in western Ecuador, where it has been recorded together with three other rodents of the oryzomyine group, Sigmodontomys aphrastus, Mindomys hammondi, and Handleyomys alfaroi, as well as three opossums, Chironectes minimus and unidentified species of Didelphis and Marmosa. Mindo is a "tiny agricultural community" located at 0°02'S, 78°48'W and 1,264 metres (4,150 ft) above sea level. It was originally described by Oldfield Thomas as a subspecies of Oryzomys albigularis. It remained synonymized under this species until it was recognized as a separate species when the genus Nephelomys was established for Oryzomys albigularis and related species in 2006.
Nephelomys nimbosus is a species of rodent in the genus Nephelomys of family Cricetidae. Its type locality is at San Antonio on the northeastern slope of the Tungurahua in the Andes of Ecuador, at an altitude of about 6,700 feet (2,000 m). The type series included five individuals.
Thomasomys pagaibambensis is a species of rodent in the genus Thomasomys known from the Andes of northern Peru. It consists of populations that were identified as Thomasomys cinereus until they were identified as a new species in 2023.
