Tiera Fletcher is an American engineer who graduated from MIT in 2017 and works for Boeing. She is one of the designers and structural analysts building the Space Launch System for NASA which is set to send people to Mars. [1]


Early and personal life

Tiera Fletcher was born in the greater Atlanta area in Georgia. [2] Her mother Sheila was an accountant and her father was a construction worker. [3] Her parents encouraged her to calculate things and measure things in her daily life. These exercises – including coupon clipping, totaling up grocery receipts, and learning about the applications of architecture – challenged Fletcher and set her apart from other kids her age. [4] [5] At eleven years old, she zeroed in on her interest in Aerospace engineering while participating in an aerospace program put on by Lockheed Martin. [3]

She was married in July 2017 to Myron Fletcher, an aerospace engineer who also works at Boeing. [3] [6] Both she and her husband share an interest in influencing young people to join the world of STEM along with increasing the diversity of STEM fields. [3]


Fletcher attended Wheeler High School in Marietta, Georgia. [7] During her senior year of high school, Fletcher received an internship at NASA in Langley, Virginia. [3] She also landed a research internship at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2014. The internship involved assisting in the research of landing performance in aircraft. [8]

Fletcher attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and received her Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering in June 2017, graduating with a GPA of 5.0, which is perfect+extra credit. [2] She participated in a mentorship program to help other students at MIT. [1] After her first year, Fletcher participated in undergraduate research studying design optimization of aircraft at MIT. [8] Her second year, she again participated in undergraduate research, this time studying Network Analysis. [8] During her junior and senior years of college, Fletcher participated in internships at Boeing. From June 2015 to June 2016 Fletcher was a Systems Engineering Intern at Boeing where she helped design, test, and collaborate with other professionals on Boeing products. The following year from June 2016 to June 2017 Fletcher was a design engineer and stress analyst intern at Boeing, where she helped with the design process and analysis of the Space Launch System for NASA. After graduating from MIT, Fletcher took up a position at Boeing as a Structural Analysis Engineer. [8] She is one of the lead engineers and designers working on the Space Launch System for NASA which aims to put humans on Mars. [1] [11] The area that Fletcher works on is the exploratory upper stage of the spacecraft which helps the craft complete its ascent phase. She is part of the Engine Section Task Leading team responsible for this, of which she is the youngest member. [5] [12]

Recognition and awards

Fletcher received the 2017 Good Housekeeping's Awesome Woman Award which recognizes women who are impacting the world for the better by overcoming social constraints and influencing the world around them. [1]

Also in 2017, Fletcher received the Albert G. Hill Prize at MIT which recognizes students in their junior or senior year who have excelled academically and impacted the environment at MIT in a way that improves campus climate for other minorities. [13]

In June 2018, Fletcher participated as a keynote speaker at Impact'18 in Krakow – where speakers discuss innovations and business models to share with the world what work they are doing. [14]

On November 8, 2018, Fletcher won the Most Promising Engineer – Industry Award at the 2019 Black Engineer of the Year Awards. [15]

Jeanette Epps American aerospace engineer and NASA astronaut

Jeanette Jo Epps is an American aerospace engineer and NASA astronaut. Epps received both her M. S. and Ph.D degrees in aerospace engineering from the University of Maryland, where she was part of the rotor-craft research group and was a NASA GSRP Fellow. She was chosen for the 20th class of NASA astronauts in 2009, graduating in 2011. Epps currently serves as a member of the ISS Operations Branch and has completed analog astronaut missions, including NEEMO 18 and CAVES 19. She is the second woman and first African-American woman to have participated in CAVES.

The Bigelow Next-Generation Commercial Space Station is a private orbital space station under development by Bigelow Aerospace. Previous concepts of the space station had included multiple modules such as two B330 expandable spacecraft modules as well as a central docking node, propulsion, solar arrays, and attached crew capsules. However it now appears that each B330 can operate as an independent space station. Attaching a B330 to the International Space Station or flying a B330 alone have been suggested by Robert Bigelow.

Gwynne Shotwell is an American businesswoman and engineer. She is the president and chief operating officer of SpaceX, an American space transportation company, where she is responsible for day-to-day operations and company growth.

SpaceWorks Enterprises, Inc. (SEI) is an aerospace engineering company based in Atlanta, Georgia, United States that specializes in the design and assessment of advanced space concepts for both government and commercial customers.

Susan G. Finley Software engineer

Susan G. Finley, a native Californian, has been an employee of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) since January 1958, making her the longest-serving woman in NASA. Two days before Explorer 1 was launched, Finley began her career with the laboratory as a human computer, calculating rocket launch trajectories by hand. She now serves as a subsystem engineer for NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN). At JPL, she has participated in the exploration of the Moon, the Sun, all the planets, and other bodies in the Solar System.

David A. Spencer

David A. Spencer is the Mars Sample Return Campaign Mission Manager at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. As an aerospace engineer, Spencer designs and operates planetary spacecraft.

The Mars race; or race to Mars; or race for Mars; is the competitive environment between various national space agencies, "New Space" and aerospace manufacturers involving crewed missions to Mars, land on Mars, or set a crewed base there. Some of these efforts are part of a greater Mars colonization vision, while others are for glory, or scientific endeavours. Some of this competitiveness is part of the NewSpace race.

Kavya K. Manyapu is an Indian–American aerospace engineer. She is part of the Boeing team that developed the CST-100 Starliner spacecraft. She developed a fabric for self-cleaning space suits that uses carbon nanotubes to repel dust for use in future lunar and Mars missions.
