Tmetolophota propria is a moth of the family Noctuidae. [1] It was described by Francis Walker in 1856. [2] It is endemic to New Zealand, [1] where it is very common and widespread in montane to alpine grassland areas. [3] In 2019 lepidopterist Robert J. B. Hoare undertook a major review of New Zealand noctuids. Hoare, having inspected the type material of this species, placed it within the genus Ichneutica. [4]

The larvae feed on endemic and adventive grasses. [5]
