Vice Admiral Sir Charles Anthony Johnstone-Burt, KCVO , CB , OBE , DL (born 1 February 1958) is a retired Royal Navy officer who is currently serving as the Master of the Household. In this role, he took part in the 2023 Coronation. [1]
Johnstone-Burt was educated at Wellington College [2] [3] and Van Mildert College at Durham University, where he took Joint Honours in Psychology and Anthropology in 1980. [2]
Johnstone-Burt joined the Royal Navy in 1977. Promoted to lieutenant in January 1982, [4] served in HMS Active during the Falklands War. He qualified as a helicopter pilot in 1983 flying Sea Kings and Lynx helicopters. He qualified as a principal warfare officer and served in several frigates before being appointed as first lieutenant and second-in-command of HMS Scylla in 1991. He was appointed commanding officer of HMS Brave in 1994 and went on to study at the United States Naval War College, where courses are affiliated with Salve Regina University in Rhode Island, taking a Master of Arts in International Relations from 1996 to 1997. [2] He also attended the Higher Command and Staff Course at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in 2000. [2]
Johnstone-Burt was appointed commanding officer of HMS Montrose and Captain of the 6th Frigate Squadron in 2000 before becoming Commodore of the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth in 2002 and then Captain of HMS Ocean in 2004. [5] He went on to be Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the Joint Helicopter Command in 2005, Flag Officer, Scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland in 2006, [6] and Commander of the Joint Helicopter Command in 2008 before being appointed Director of Counter Narcotics and International Organised Crime at Headquarters International Security Assistance Force in Kabul, Afghanistan in 2011. [5] Promoted to vice admiral, he became the Chief of Staff to NATO's Supreme Allied Command Transformation at Norfolk, Virginia, in November 2011 and held this post until October 2013 when he retired from the Service. Johnstone-Burt was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in the 2013 New Year Honours, [8] and Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) in the 2020 Birthday Honours. [9]
In 2013 Johnstone-Burt became the Master of the Household to the Sovereign. [10] In this role, he took part in the 2023 Coronation. [1]
He was a member of the Board of Governors of Monkton Combe School from 2004. [11] He was also a member of the Board of Governors and Chair at Haberdashers' Aske's School for Girls from 2014 to 2018. [12] He was appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Dorset on 22 August 2016. This gave him the Post Nominal Letters "DL" for Life. [13] [14]
Admiral of the Fleet Michael Cecil Boyce, Baron Boyce, was a British Royal Navy officer who also sat as a crossbench member of the House of Lords until his death in November 2022.
Vice Admiral Sir Timothy James Hamilton Laurence, is a retired Royal Navy officer and husband of Anne, Princess Royal, the only sister of King Charles III. Laurence was equerry to Queen Elizabeth II from 1986 to 1989. He married her daughter, Princess Anne, in 1992.
Admiral of the Fleet Peter John Hill-Norton, Baron Hill-Norton, was a senior Royal Navy officer. He fought in the Second World War as gunnery officer in a cruiser operating on the Western Approaches and in the North Sea taking part in the Norwegian Campaign, then in a cruiser taking part in the Arctic convoys and finally in a battleship operating in the Eastern Fleet. After the War he commanded a destroyer and then an aircraft carrier. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff and then Chief of the Defence Staff in early 1970s. In the latter role he gave the final commitment to Project Chevaline, the Polaris missile improvement programme. He went on to be Chairman of the NATO Military Committee.
Admiral of the Fleet Sir David Benjamin Bathurst, is a former Royal Navy officer. He is the only living person, apart from King Charles III, holding the rank of Admiral of the Fleet in the Royal Navy since the death of Lord Boyce. After training as a pilot and qualifying as a helicopter instructor, Bathurst commanded a Naval Air Squadron and then two frigates before achieving higher command in the navy. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff from 1993 to 1995: in that capacity he advised the British Government on the deployment of Naval Support including Sea Harriers during the Bosnian War.
Admiral Sir John Cunningham Kirkwood Slater,, known as Jock Slater, is a retired Royal Navy officer. He commanded a minesweeper, a frigate and then a destroyer before taking over the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious and then achieving higher command in the Navy. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff from 1995 to 1998: in that capacity he played a key role in the 1998 Strategic Defence Review carried out by the Labour Government that had come to power a year earlier.
Vice Admiral Peter John Wilkinson, is a retired senior Royal Navy officer who served as Deputy Chief of Defence Staff (Personnel) from 2007 to 2010. He was National President of the Royal British Legion from 2012 until 2016.

Admiral of the Fleet Sir William Doveton Minet Staveley was a Royal Navy officer. Staveley saw service as a minesweeper commander on coastal patrol during the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation before commanding a frigate and then an aircraft carrier and ultimately achieving higher command in the Navy. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff in the late 1980s. In that role he fought hard for a fleet large enough to meet NATO commitments.

After serving as a submarine commander, he commanded a frigate and then commanded an aircraft carrier on operational patrol off Sierra Leone. He went on to be Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation and then Commander-in-Chief Fleet. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval staff, the professional head of the Royal Navy, from July 2009 to April 2013. In this role he advised the British Government on the deployment of naval forces during operations around Libya. He was succeeded by Admiral Sir George Zambellas in April 2013.
