Tracie Davis (born May 6,1970,in Jacksonville,Florida) is an American politician and former teacher who currently serves as the Senator for District 5 in the Florida Senate as a member of the Democratic Party. After former Democratic representative Reggie Fullwood pleaded guilty to two counts of federal fraud,Davis was selected by the Duval County Democratic Party to replace him on the ticket for District 13 in the Florida House of Representatives. Prior to her run,she was a special education teacher for Duval County Public Schools,and subsequently worked as the deputy supervisor of elections. She holds education degrees from University of North Florida and Edward Waters College. [2]
Carrie Mae Pittman Meek was the United States Representative for Florida's 17th congressional district,from 1993 to 2003. Having been elected in the September 1992 primary with no general election opponent,she was the first African American since the Reconstruction era elected to represent Florida in the United States Congress,where she advocated for the poor and for members of minority groups. The 2023 Jacksonville mayoral election was held on March 21,2023,with a runoff held on May 16. Incumbent Republican mayor Lenny Curry was term-limited and could not seek a third term in office. Seven candidates filed to run,including four Republicans,two Democrats,and an independent. Jacksonville mayoral elections use a blanket primary system where all candidates,regardless of party affiliation,appear on the same ballot.
The 2022 elections for the Florida State Senate took place on Tuesday,November 8,2022,to elect state senators from all 40 districts. Although on ordinary years,20 senators are elected at a time on a staggered basis,races following redistricting elect all 40 members to ensure that each member represents an equal number of constituents. The Republican Party expanded their Senate majority from 24 to 28,gaining a supermajority in the Senate. The concurrently held House elections also resulted in a supermajority,giving Republicans supermajority control of the legislature.
