On November 5, 2008, a tropical disturbance formed in the Philippine Sea to the northeast of Zamboanga in the Philippines. [1] Later that day whilst the disturbance moved towards the north-west, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center assessed the disturbances chances of forming into a significant tropical cyclone within 24 hours as "Poor". [1] Early the next day as the disturbance was moving closer to the Philippines, PAGASA designated the disturbance as Tropical Depression Quinta. [2] Later that day the JTWC upgraded the disturbances chances of becoming a significant tropical cyclone to "Fair" and then to "Good" as they released a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert on the developing disturbance. [3] [4] The Japan Meteorological Agency then designated the disturbance as a minor tropical depression, at the same time the JTWC designated the tropical depression as 24W. [5] [6]

On November 7 after the JMA had designated the minor tropical depression as a full tropical depression, the JTWC and the JMA upgraded the depression to a tropical storm with the JMA assigning the name Maysak. [7] [8] [9] The next day PAGASA released their final advisory on tropical storm Quinta (Maysak) as it had moved out of PAGASA's area of responsibility, this came as both the JTWC and the JMA reported that Maysak had reached its peak wind speeds of 60 mph (95 km/h) 10-Min sustained & 70 mph (110 km/h) 1-Min sustained. [10] [11] [12] This meant that the JMA considered Maysak to be a severe tropical storm at its peak whilst on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale Maysak was considered to be a tropical storm. [12]

Later that day Maysak recurved and started moving towards the south towards PAGASA's area of responsibility. The next day before Maysak re-entered PAGASA's area of responsibility, the JMA reported that Maysak had weakened into a tropical storm and then into a tropical depression, and released their final full advisory on Maysak. [13] [14] However the JTWC were reporting at this time that Maysak was still a tropical storm. [11] Maysak then moved back into PAGASA's area of responsibility later that day, at this time PAGASA thought that Maysak was still a tropical storm. [15] The JTWC downgraded Maysak to a tropical depression and released their final advisory early on November 10. [16] PAGASA also downgraded Maysak to a tropical depression at this time however they kept issuing warnings until early the next afternoon when they released their final advisory on Quinta. [17]

On November 12, PAGASA started to reissue advisories on Quinta, and renamed the system Siony. [18] The JMA were also still monitoring Siony as a minor tropical depression at this time, whilst the JTWC assessed Maysak's remnants chances of regenerating into a significant tropical cyclone as fair. [19] [20] Later that day the JTWC upgraded the remnants chances of regenerating as good and released a tropical cyclone formation alert. [21] Later that day PAGASA released their final advisory on tropical depression Siony as it had moved out of their area of responsibility and was moving towards Vietnam in the west. [22] Late the next day the JTWC cancelled the tropical cyclone formation alert as they had reassessed Maysak chances of forming into a significant tropical cyclone within 24 hours as poor. [23] Early the next day the JMA released their final advisory on tropical depression Maysak whilst later that morning the JTWC declared that Maysak had dissipated.

Preparations and Impact

Philippines

As PAGASA declared that Tropical Depression Quinta had formed, they put Public Storm warning signal No.1 up for parts of Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao. [2] This meant that wind speeds of 30–60 km/h were expected within 36 hours. Later that day PAGASA put some more areas of Luzon under Signal 1 and cancelled the signal over parts of Mindanao [24] Later on November 6 PAGASA kept revising the areas under Signal No.1 in Visayas & Luzon. [25] [26] PAGASA then cancelled all signals for Visayas Later that day as Quinta moved away from the Philippines. [27] Early the next day PAGASA cancelled all off the signals for Luzon as they released their first final advisory on Qunita. [10]

On November 12, the Philippine National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) reported that over 4800 people were affected by tropical storm Maysak. [28] The NDCC reported that a total of 92 homes were either partially or totally destroyed in the Philippines. [28] Sixteen of the municipalities in the Philippines reported power interruptions from November 6 until November 7. [28] In total 19 people were killed by Maysak and 14 people injured. [28]

Vietnam

The remnants of Maysak lead to flooding rains in Vietnam which left at least 11 people dead. Flood waters in Ho Chi Minh City were estimated to be at least a metre (3 ft) deep. [29]

Typhoon Neoguri, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Ambo, was the earliest tropical cyclone on record to strike China. The first named storm in the 2008 Pacific typhoon season, named after the Korean word for raccoon dog, it formed from a low pressure area on April 13 to the east of the Philippine island of Mindanao, and after crossing the island it intensified into a tropical storm in the South China Sea. Environmental conditions allowed for quick strengthening, with Neoguri attaining typhoon status on April 16. The typhoon reached its peak intensity on April 18 as it approached the island of Hainan, and subsequently it turned northward. Due to increased wind shear and cooler waters, Neoguri rapidly weakened and made landfall as a minimal tropical storm in southern China on April 19.

Severe Tropical Storm Halong, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Cosme, was the fourth severe tropical storm named by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) who are the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre for the Northwestern Pacific Ocean. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center also recognised Halong as the fifth tropical depression, the fourth tropical storm as well as the third typhoon of the 2008 Pacific typhoon season.

Typhoon Nuri, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Karen, was the 12th named storm and the seventh typhoon that was recognised by the Japan Meteorological Agency. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center recognised it as the 13th tropical depression, the 12th tropical storm and the 8th typhoon of the 2008 Pacific typhoon season. The name Nuri was submitted to the World Meteorological Organisation's Typhoon Committee by Malaysia in 2003 after the name Rusa was retired in 2002. The name Nuri is Malay for a blue crowned parroquet, a type of parrot. The name Karen was assigned by PAGASA to a tropical depression for the second time, the other time being in 2004 to Typhoon Rananim.

The 2009 Pacific typhoon season was a below average season that spawned only 22 named storms, 13 typhoons, and five super typhoons. It was also recognized as the deadliest season in the Philippines for decades. The first half of the season was very quiet whereas the second half of the season was extremely active. The season's first named storm, Kujira, developed on May 3 while the season's last named storm, Nida, dissipated on December 3.

Typhoon Dolphin, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Ulysses, was the final named storm and typhoon of the 2008 Pacific typhoon season. The only impact that was reported from Dolphin was to the M/Bca Mae Jan, which was a cargo passenger ship which sank on December 14, due to rough seas caused by Dolphin. There were 46 people reported dead while seven were reported as missing.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tropical Depression Auring (2009)</span> Pacific tropical depression in 2009

Tropical Depression Auring formed as a tropical disturbance late on December 30, 2008, to the southeast of Manila in the Philippines. Over the next few days the disturbance gradually developed before early on January 3, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), reported that the disturbance had intensified into the first tropical depression of the season with PAGASA assigning the name Auring to the depression. As the Depression was moving into a high level of vertical wind shear, it did not develop any further and late on January 5 as the baroclinic zone approached Auring, it was downgraded to an area of low pressure by the PAGASA before the JMA followed suit the next day as it was declared as dissipated by the JTWC.

This timeline documents all of the events of the 2009 Pacific typhoon season which was the period that tropical cyclones formed in the Western Pacific Ocean during 2009, with most of the tropical cyclones forming between May and November. The scope of this article is limited to the Pacific Ocean, north of the equator between 100°E and the International Date Line. Tropical storms that form in the entire Western Pacific basin are assigned a name by the Japan Meteorological Agency. Tropical depressions that form in this basin are given a number with a "W" suffix by the United States' Joint Typhoon Warning Center. In addition, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) assigns names to tropical cyclones that enter or form in the Philippine area of responsibility. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Kujira (2009)</span> Pacific typhoon in 2009

Typhoon Kujira, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Dante, was first reported by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) on April 28. It was the fourth depression and the first typhoon of the season. The disturbance dissipated later that day however it regenerated early on April 30 within the southern islands of Luzon. It was then designated as a Tropical Depression during the next morning by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), with PAGASA assigning the name Dante to the depression. However the JTWC did not designate the system as a depression until early on May 2 which was after the depression had made landfall on the Philippines. Later that day Dante was upgraded to a Tropical Storm and was named as Kujira by the JMA. The cyclone started to rapidly intensify becoming a typhoon early on May 4, and then reaching its peak winds of 155 km/h (100 mph) (10-min), 215 km/h (135 mph) (1-min) later that day after a small clear eye had developed.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tropical Storm Mujigae</span> Pacific tropical storm in 2009

Tropical Storm Mujigae, known in the Philippines as Tropical Depression Maring was a tropical storm that affected the Philippines, China, Hong Kong, and Vietnam in September 2009. Mujigae originated from an area of convection that developed along with a monsoon trough with favorable conditions on 8 September. The disturbance would organize to a tropical depression and be assigned the names 14W by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center and Maring by PAGASA later that day. Tropical Depression 14W would rapidly develop and attain tropical storm status by the JMA and be assigned the name Mujigae on 10 September. Mujigae would later encounter unfavorable conditions with wind shear and make landfall in Hainan Island on 11 September and Vietnam on 12 September before rapidly weakening and dissipating.

Typhoon Roke, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Onyok, was a powerful and persistent tropical cyclone that affected Japan, including some areas that had been damaged by another typhoon just a few weeks prior. It was the fifteenth named storm, the tenth severe tropical storm, the sixth typhoon of the 2011 Pacific typhoon season and overall, the 27th tropical cyclone to be monitored by the Japan Meteorological Agency during the year.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2020 Pacific typhoon season</span> Typhoon season in the Western Pacific Ocean

The 2020 Pacific typhoon season was the first with below-average tropical cyclone activity since 2014, with 23 named storms, 10 of which became typhoons and only 2 became super typhoons. This low activity was a consequence of La Niña that persisted from the summer of the year. It had the fifth-latest start in the basin on record, slightly behind 1973, and was the first to start that late since 2016. The first half of the season was unusually inactive, with only four systems, two named storms and one typhoon at the end of July. Additionally, the JTWC recorded no tropical cyclone development in the month of July, the first such occurrence since reliable records began. The season's first named tropical cyclone, Vongfong, developed on May 8, while the season's last named tropical cyclone, Krovanh, dissipated on December 24. However, the season's last system was an unnamed tropical depression which dissipated on December 29.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Matmo (2014)</span> Pacific typhoon in 2014

Typhoon Matmo, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Henry, was the first tropical cyclone to impact Taiwan in 2014. It was the tenth named storm and the fourth typhoon of the 2014 Pacific typhoon season. The typhoon is believed to be one of the main reasons behind the crash of TransAsia Airways Flight 222, which occurred a day after it made landfall. There were fifty-four passengers on board and a crew of four, of whom 48 were killed. Taiwan News reported that "first suspicions hinted" the accident might be related to Matmo. The typhoon developed from a cluster of thundershowers consolidating around an area of low pressure in the doldrums. It initially followed a westward track, then made a sharp northwest turn before making landfall on Taiwan, and then China. After moving further inland, Matmo slowly curved back northeastwards and became extratropical before its remnants affected the Korean Peninsula. The typhoon caused damage of US$418 million and there were 65 deaths related to the storm. Matmo brought tropical storm force winds and heavy rainfall to the Philippines, typhoon force winds and torrential rainfall to China and Taiwan and heavy rains to Korea. Two deaths in the Philippines were attributed to the typhoon. The storm left 31,505 people in Taiwan without power. 50 miles per hour (80 km/h) gusts were reported in the Gimpo International Airport of Seoul.

This timeline documents all of the events of the 2015 Pacific typhoon season. Most of the tropical cyclones formed between May and November. The scope of this article is limited to the Pacific Ocean, north of the equator between 100°E and the International Date Line. This area, called the Western Pacific basin, is the responsibility of the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA). They host and operate the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC), located in Tokyo. The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) is also responsible for assigning names to all tropical storms that are formed within the basin. However, any storm that enters or forms in the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) will be named by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) using a local name. Also of note - the Western Pacific basin is monitored by the United States' Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), which gives all Tropical depressions a number with a "W" suffix.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Maysak (2015)</span> Pacific typhoon in 2015

Typhoon Maysak, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Chedeng, was the most powerful pre-April tropical cyclone on record in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean. The fourth named storm of the 2015 Pacific typhoon season, Maysak originated as a tropical depression on March 26. The next day, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) upgraded the depression to a tropical storm and assigned it the name Maysak. According to the JMA, Maysak became the second typhoon of the year on March 28. The typhoon underwent explosive intensification into a Category 5 super typhoon on March 31, passing near the islands of Chuuk and Yap in the Federated States of Micronesia. After maintaining that intensity for 18 hours, Maysak weakened, made landfall over the Philippine island of Luzon as a minimal tropical storm, and dissipated shortly afterwards.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Bavi</span> Pacific typhoon in 2020

Typhoon Bavi, known in the Philippines as Severe Tropical Storm Igme, was a powerful tropical cyclone that made landfall in North Korea in August 2020. The eighth named storm and third typhoon of the 2020 Pacific typhoon season, Bavi formed from a low pressure area depression on August 21 to the north of the Philippines and strengthened into a tropical storm on August 22. Bavi gradually strengthened as it skirted Taiwan and Okinawa, and became a typhoon on August 24. Passing over warm waters, Bavi turned to northwest and reached its peak intensity near Jeju Island on August 26. Thereafter, increasing wind shear and cooler waters caused Bavi to quickly weaken. Bavi made landfall in North Korea on August 27, and became an extratropical cyclone shortly thereafter.
