Tychon was a British air-to-surface missile proposed by Bristol Aeroplane Company's Guided Weapons Division in the early 1960s. It was a development of the earlier Momentum Bomb proposal developed by Barnes Wallis at Vickers Aircraft. [1] Neither entered production.
Momentum Bomb was an unpowered glide bomb intended to help strike aircraft remain outside enemy air defences while delivering tactical nuclear weapons. [1] Tychon expanded on the basic concept, adding a rocket motor to increase range, and modular guidance systems that could be swapped for different missions, including both conventional and nuclear attacks and reconnaissance.
The project saw some official interest, but never much enthusiasm on the part of the Air Staff or the Admiralty. Many of the roles it was intended to fill were instead put into an Anglo-French development project, OR.1168, which emerged as the Martel.
The Momentum Bomb was invented during the era when toss bombing (or loft bombing) was the preferred method of delivering tactical nuclear weapons. This was designed to allow the aircraft to fly at low altitudes during the approach to protect it from anti-aircraft weapons. The aircraft flies directly toward the target, and then, at a pre-selected point, enters a climb. The bomb is released at a programmed point during the climb, which puts it on a ballistic path to the target. Immediately after release, the aircraft continues pitching up until it has performed a half-loop and is now flying away from the target. The aircraft then returns to low level to return to friendly lines. [2]
The problem with toss bombing is that the aircraft begins to climb as it is approaching the target, which would normally be a valuable one and thus strongly protected. After release, the aircraft continues to climb, remaining in the Air Defence Zone (ADZ) as it executes its loop and eventually flies away. This opens the aircraft to attack during this period, which depends on the size of the ADZ. [2]
The Momentum Bomb solved this problem by having the bomb perform the toss manoeuvre instead of the aircraft. Instead of approaching the target directly, the aircraft would fly a course along a tangent to the ADZ. At a pre-determined point, it would turn so that it was flying directly away from the target, which would now be behind it. Once stable along the new path, the bomb would be dropped. After release, the bomb would apply full up-elevator, causing it to perform the half loop and start approaching the target. Once the internal sensors indicated it had reached horizontal at the top of the loop, the elevators reversed and caused it to enter a gliding path toward the target. [2]
The advantage to this system is that the aircraft never entered the ADZ, only the bomb did. Moreover, the aircraft remained at low level throughout the attack, meaning it was not exposed to any other anti-aircraft weapons in the approach or escape. [2]
It is not clear whether Momentum Bomb was ever seriously considered for development, but Bristol found the concept interesting enough to propose a more flexible version. Instead of just being used for nuclear attacks, the Tychon concept was a modular design that could be used for a wide variety of missions. It retained the original stand-off nuclear attack role, but aided by a rocket motor that would allow the aircraft to stay much further from its target. The major change was to add swappable guidance systems, allowing the toss-bomb system to be replaced with ones that would turn it into an anti-radiation missile, add TV guidance, or allow it to fly a pre-programmed course to produce reconnaissance in protected areas. The resulting weapon system was very similar to the original Momentum Bomb in general layout. At the extreme rear was a vertical stabilizer and elevator system not unlike those found on any high-speed aircraft. It lacked horizontal stabilizers, instead the wings were very narrow-chord and ran most of the length of the bomb, ending just in front of the elevators. The guidance systems were placed in a module on the top of the bomb, which gave it the appearance of a long cockpit like one might find on a trainer aircraft. [2] [3]
Tychon was intended to be carried by most of the strike aircraft then in service or on the drawing board. The English Electric Canberra was able to carry a single weapon, the V bombers, Blackburn Buccaneer and Hawker Siddeley P.1154 could carry two, and the TSR-2 could carry four. There were also outlines of launchers from trucks, or from the Seaslug launchers on the County-class destroyers. [2]
In 1962, the Royal Air Force issued requirement OR.1168 for a missile that could be used as a TV guided precision guidance weapon, or be fitted with an anti-radiation seeker. Although it would seem Tychon was perfect for this role, and was submitted for it, [3] the Air Ministry was not convinced that the funding for its development would be available. In October, Under Secretary of State at the Air Ministry wrote to Deputy Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Sir Ronald Lees, stating "I believe, however, that we would get a simpler and cheaper weapon by teaming up with the French." [4]
The French had also been considering a similar anti-radiation weapon, the Matra R630, as well as other air-to-surface weapons derived from AS.30. Formal discussions began in November 1963. During this period, de Havilland Propellers, recently renamed Hawker Siddeley Dynamics, had been working on a TV guided design known as RG.10. When the discussion began, de Havilland began adapting their proposal to the French missile designs, which became AS.37. Tychon was abandoned as it became clear this would be the winning design. [4]
The Avro Blue Steel was a British air-launched, rocket-propelled nuclear armed standoff missile, built to arm the V bomber force. It allowed the bomber to launch the missile against its target while still outside the range of surface-to-air missiles (SAMs). The missile proceeded to the target at speeds up to Mach 3, and would trigger within 100 m of the pre-defined target point.
A missile is an airborne ranged weapon capable of self-propelled flight aided usually by a propellant, jet engine or rocket motor. Historically, missile referred to any projectile that is thrown, shot or propelled towards a target; this usage is still recognized today with any unguided jet- or rocket-propelled weapons generally described as rocket artillery. Airborne explosive devices without propulsion are referred to as shells if fired by an artillery piece and bombs if dropped by an aircraft.
A glide bomb or stand-off bomb is a standoff weapon with flight control surfaces to give it a flatter, gliding flight path than that of a conventional bomb without such surfaces. This allows it to be released at a distance from the target rather than right over it, allowing a successful attack without exposing the launching aircraft to air defenses near the target. Glide bombs can accurately deliver warheads in a manner comparable to cruise missiles at a fraction of the cost—sometimes by installing flight control kits on simple unguided bombs—and they are very difficult for surface-to-air missiles to intercept due to their tiny radar signatures and short flight times. The only effective countermeasure is to intercept launching aircraft before they approach within range, making glide bombs very potent weapons where wartime exigencies prevent this.
Fairey's Green Cheese, a rainbow code name, was a British-made radar-guided anti-ship missile project of the 1950s. It was a development of the earlier and much larger Blue Boar television guided glide bomb, making it smaller, replacing the television camera with the radar seeker from the Red Dean air-to-air missile, and carrying a smaller warhead of 1,700 pounds (770 kg).
Blue Water was a British battlefield nuclear missile of the early 1960s, intended to replace the MGM-5 Corporal, which was becoming obsolete. With roughly the same role and range as Corporal, the solid-fuel Blue Water was far simpler to use and would be significantly easier to support in the field. It was seen as a replacement for Corporal both in the UK as well as other NATO operators, notably Germany and possibly Turkey.
Toss bombing is a method of bombing where the attacking aircraft pulls upward when releasing its bomb load, giving the bomb additional time of flight by starting its ballistic path with an upward vector.
An air-to-surface missile (ASM) or air-to-ground missile (AGM) is a missile designed to be launched from military aircraft at targets on land or sea. There are also unpowered guided glide bombs not considered missiles. The two most common propulsion systems for air-to-surface missiles are rocket motors, usually with shorter range, and slower, longer-range jet engines. Some Soviet-designed air-to-surface missiles are powered by ramjets, giving them both long range and high speed.
The AGM-12 Bullpup is a short-range air-to-ground missile developed by Martin Marietta for the US Navy. It is among the earliest precision guided air-to-ground weapons and the first to be mass produced. It first saw operational use in 1959 on the A-4 Skyhawk, but soon found use on the A-6 Intruder, F-100 Super Sabre, F-105 Thunderchief, F-4 Phantom II, F-8 Crusader, and P-3 Orion in both Navy and US Air Force service, as well as NATO allies. The weapon was guided manually via a small joystick in the aircraft cockpit, which presented a number of problems and its ultimate accuracy was on the order of 10 metres (33 ft), greater than desired. In the 1960s it was increasingly supplanted by fully automatic weapons like the AGM-62 Walleye and AGM-65 Maverick.
The Rainbow Codes were a series of code names used to disguise the nature of various British military research projects. They were mainly used by the Ministry of Supply from the end of the Second World War until 1958, when the ministry was broken up and its functions distributed among the forces. The codes were replaced by an alphanumeric code system.
The Avro 730 was a planned Mach 3 reconnaissance aircraft and strategic bomber that was being developed by Avro Aircraft for the Royal Air Force (RAF). It had been originally envisioned as a very high-speed aircraft to perform aerial reconnaissance missions, conforming with the requirements of Air Ministry Specification OR.330. Avro subsequently decided to modify the design of the proposed 730 in order to accommodate its arming with nuclear weapons; this change therefore meant that the type would be able to perform the nuclear weapons delivery mission as well, which had been called for under Air Ministry Specification RB.156T which sought a high speed reconnaissance-bomber aircraft.
Red Dean, a rainbow code name, was a large air-to-air missile developed for the Royal Air Force during the 1950s. Originally planned to use an active radar seeker to offer all-aspect performance and true fire-and-forget engagements, the valve-based electronics demanded a missile of prodigious size.
The GAM-63 RASCAL was a supersonic air-to-surface missile that was developed by the Bell Aircraft Company. The RASCAL was the United States Air Force's first nuclear armed standoff missile. The RASCAL was initially designated the ASM-A-2, then re-designated the B-63 in 1951 and finally re-designated the GAM-63 in 1955. The name RASCAL was the acronym for RAdar SCAnning Link, the missile's guidance system. The RASCAL project was cancelled in September 1958.
The Vickers Blue Boar was a family of British air-launched television-guided glide bombs of the 1950s which was cancelled during development. A key role was as an anti-shipping missile, using its guidance system to attack the moving targets. It would also replace unguided bombs between 5,000 and 10,000 lb against point targets, or be equipped with a nuclear warhead. A smaller 1,000 lb (450 kg) version was also developed for testing. The name is a randomly assigned rainbow code.
Blue Envoy was a British project to develop a ramjet-powered surface-to-air missile. It was tasked with countering supersonic bomber aircraft launching stand-off missiles, and thus had to have very long range and high-speed capabilities. The final design was expected to fly at Mach 3 with a maximum range of over 200 miles (320 km).
Television guidance (TGM) is a type of missile guidance system using a television camera in the missile or glide bomb that sends its signal back to the launch platform. There, a weapons officer or bomb aimer watches the image on a television screen and sends corrections to the missile, typically over a radio control link. Television guidance is not a seeker because it is not automated, although semi-automated systems with autopilots to smooth out the motion are known. They should not be confused with contrast seekers, which also use a television camera but are true automated seeker systems.
Spaniel was a series of experimental British missiles of the Second World War. They began as surface-to-air missile designs developed by the Air Ministry from 1941. Based on the 3-inch Unrotated Projectile anti-aircraft rocket, it proved to have too little performance to easily reach typical bomber altitudes, leading to further development as an air-to-air missile carried aloft by heavy fighters. Some progress had been made by 1942 when the program was cancelled as the threat of German air attack dwindled. Further research was directed at a dedicated air-to-air design, Artemis.
Artemis, named for the Greek goddess of the hunt, was an early air-to-air missile project carried out by the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) beginning in late 1943. The missile was intended for radar-equipped night fighters like the Bristol Beaufighter, which would track the target on their AI Mk. IV radar and then fire at a set range, with the missile homing on the signal of the AI radar being reflected off the target.
Red Hebe was a large active radar homing air-to-air missile developed by Vickers for the Royal Air Force's Operational Requirement F.155 interceptor aircraft. It was a development of the earlier Red Dean, which was not suitable for launch by the new supersonic aircraft. Before progressing much beyond advanced design studies, F.155 was cancelled in the aftermath of the 1957 Defence White Paper which moved Britain's attention from strategic bombers to ballistic missiles. With no other suitable platform, Red Hebe was cancelled as well.
Orange Nell, a rainbow code name, was a 1950s design for a short-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) to defend Royal Navy ships against supersonic strike aircraft and anti-ship missiles. It could be mounted on any ship capable of carrying the QF 5.25-inch naval gun, whose turret would be replaced by a twin-rail missile launcher and 40-round magazine. Started in 1953, the system was intended to enter service some time later and offer performance against missile developments into the 1970s.
