Early on July 17, the JMA reported that a tropical depression had developed about 220 km (135 mi) to the northeast of Manila, Philippines. [1] Later that day the JTWC reported that the depression had a small low level circulation center with deep convection flaring to the northeast of the center with an unfavorable environment. [2] Also spotting dense fog within the Sea of Okhotsk. [3] However, as the low-level circulation center was located close to land and was not very organized, the JTWC declared that there was a poor chance of it becoming a significant tropical cyclone within 48 hours. [2] However, during that day, the depression rapidly consolidated with an anticyclone helping to develop the low-level circulation center. As a result, early the next day the JTWC issued a tropical cyclone formation alert on the depression, however they thought that further development might be hindered as it was located close to land. [4] Whilst it moved along the southern edge of the subtropical ridge, the Depression made landfall in Aurora province at 0600 UTC, [5] before the JTWC initiated advisories later that morning, as the low-level circulation center had consolidated and poleward outflow into the tropical upper tropospheric trough had improved. [6] [7]

As the storm moved to the Philippine Area of Responsibility, the storm was named Caloy by PAGASA. Then. on July 19, PAGASA issued their last advisory on Tropical Storm Caloy as it had moved out of their Area of Responsibility. [8] Then, the storm was officially named Chanthu by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre. [9] Later, Chanthu began to head to China, where it peaked as a Category 1 typhoon. [10] It made landfall in China and soon dissipated hours later. [11] [7]

Preparations and impact

Philippines

Before the storm hit Aurora, a report was issued by the National Disaster Coordinating Council to let Local Government Units (more so those near the affected areas) to keep an eye on the storm. [5]

In Luzon, heavy rains triggered floods that destroyed at least one house and stranded thousands of people. Eight people were killed in the Philippines. Throughout Aurora, heavy rains triggered flash flooding which destroyed at least one home and stranded hundreds of residents. The Paltic barangay, within Dingalan, became inaccessible to rescuers after the local river topped its banks and washed out nearby slopes. [12] Following the system's development, PAGASA stated that rainfall from system could trigger landslides and flooding in Aurora, the Bicol Region, and Quezon. [13]

China

On July 28, the Chinese government advised residents to stay indoors. Meteorologists also braced for heavy flooding and rainfall. [14] The government also evacuated people from coast-lying areas, including ports. Other than rainfall, the government is also concerned for the Yangtze, which has experienced heavy flooding, with floodgates opening. [15] A total of 3 million people had to be evacuated because of the storm. [16] In China, The Xinhua State news reported that two people were killed by walls that were blown over by strong gales. [17] The typhoon made landfall in Hainan, killing two people. [14] The typhoon later made landfall near the city of Wuchuan. State-run television broadcast images of large waves crashing on to the Guangdong shore, trees flattened by wind and electric poles collapsed onto streets under heavy rain. [17] Thereafter heavy flooding swept away a 50-year-old man in a village in Hong Kong. [18] The southern Chinese provinces of Guangdong and Hainan braced themselves, ahead of Typhoon Chanthu's expected landfall. Guangdong meteorological authorities, have launched the highest level of disaster response. [19] In all, 9 people were killed in South China, and total economic losses were counted to be CNY 5.54 billion (US$817.7 million). [20]

Vietnam

The storm triggered heavy rainfall in Vietnam, with an estimated amount of 63–67 millimetres (2.5–2.6 in) in the Lào Cai province. The rain also destructed infrastructure, injuring three people, and blocking a line, which caused a traffic jam. In the Yên Bái province, 13 houses were destroyed by the storm. The major Duong floating bridge was also removed because of high floods in the Đuống River. [21] A total of 10 people died in Vietnam, with 7 fatalities in Hà Giang province, 2 in the Cao Bằng province, and 1 in the Lao Cai province. In the Bắc Giang province, 10 communes were isolated and 44,100 hectares (170 sq mi) of destroyed rice crops. Also, in Yên Bái province, 18 hectares (0.069 sq mi) of rice was damaged while 5 hectares (0.019 sq mi) of fishponds were damaged. [22]

Aftermath

After 700 flooding deaths and multiple storms, the Chinese government added flood reinforcements for thousands of reservoirs in China. "The central government is planning to reinforce all the small reservoirs, with a special safety official in charge, and enough money for maintenance," said Zhou Xuewen, head of the planning department with the Ministry of Water Resources. [23]

The season's first named storm, Kujira, developed on May 3 while the season's last named storm, Nida, dissipated on December 3.

The 2010 Pacific typhoon season, with 14 named storms, was the least active Pacific typhoon season on record. Seven of them strengthened into typhoons while one reached super typhoon intensity. All of the 14 named storms developed west of 150°E.

The 2013 Pacific typhoon season was the most active Pacific typhoon season since 2004, and the deadliest since 1975. It featured Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful storms and one of the strongest landfalling tropical cyclones in history. It was an above-average season with 31 named storms, 13 typhoons, and five super typhoons. The season's first named storm, Sonamu, developed on January 4 while the season's last named storm, Podul, dissipated on November 15. Despite the activity, most of the first seventeen named storms before mid-September were relatively weak, as only two of them reached typhoon intensity. Total damage amounted to at least $26.41 billion (USD), making it at the time the costliest Pacific typhoon season on record; it is currently the fourth costliest, behind the 2018, 2019 and 2023 seasons.

The 2014 Pacific typhoon season was a slightly below average season in terms of named storms, but featured the highest amount of Category 5 typhoons since 1997. This was mainly due to a developing El Niño that favors multiple powerful storms to form in the basin. The season formed twenty-three tropical storms, eleven typhoons, eight super typhoons, and seven Category 5 typhoons. The season's peak months August and September saw minimal activity caused by an unusually strong and a persistent suppressing phase of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO). The season ran throughout 2014, though most tropical cyclones typically develop between May and October. The season began with the development of Tropical Storm Lingling on January 18, and ended after Tropical Storm Jangmi which dissipated on January 1 of the next year.

The 2016 Pacific typhoon season is considered to have been the fourth-latest start for a Pacific typhoon season since reliable records began. It was an average season, with a total of 26 named storms, 13 typhoons, and six super typhoons. The season ran throughout 2016, though typically most tropical cyclones develop between May and October. The season's first named storm, Nepartak, developed on July 3, while the season's last named storm, Nock-ten, dissipated on December 28.

The 2017 Pacific typhoon season was a below-average season in terms of accumulated cyclone energy and the number of typhoons and super typhoons, and the first since the 1977 season to not produce a Category 5-equivalent typhoon on the Saffir–Simpson scale. The season produced a total of 27 named storms, 11 typhoons, and only two super typhoons, making it an average season in terms of storm numbers. It was an event in the annual cycle of tropical cyclone formation, in which tropical cyclones form in the western Pacific Ocean. The season runs throughout 2017, though most tropical cyclones typically develop between May and October. The season's first named storm, Muifa, developed on April 25, while the season's last named storm, Tembin, dissipated on December 26. This season also featured the latest occurrence of the first typhoon of the year since 1998, with Noru reaching this intensity on July 23.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Conson (2010)</span> Pacific typhoon in 2010

Typhoon Conson, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Basyang, was the second tropical cyclone during the 2010 Pacific typhoon season to impact the Philippines. Developing out of a tropical disturbance east of the Philippines on July 11, 2010, Conson quickly developed as it tracked nearly due west. Favorable environmental conditions, such as low wind shear and warm sea surface temperatures, allowed the system to intensify into a severe tropical storm by July 12. Around the same time, the JTWC assessed the storm to have been equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane. The following day, Conson struck Quezon Province with winds of 100 km/h (60 mph) before weakening. After crossing the archipelago, the storm entered the South China Sea where it was able to re-strengthen. By July 16, Conson attained typhoon status as it neared the southern Chinese island of Hainan. After brushing the island at peak intensity with sustained winds estimated at 130 km/h (80 mph), the storm weakened in the Gulf of Tonkin due to less favorable conditions. The storm eventually made landfall near Hanoi, Vietnam on July 17 and dissipated the following day.

The 2020 Pacific typhoon season was the first of an ongoing series of below average Pacific typhoon seasons, and became the first with below-average tropical cyclone activity since 2014, with 23 named storms, 10 of which became typhoons and only 2 became super typhoons. This low activity was a consequence of La Niña that persisted from the summer of the year. It had the sixth-latest start in the basin on record, slightly behind 1973, and was the first to start that late since 2016. The first half of the season was unusually inactive, with only four systems, two named storms and one typhoon at the end of July. Additionally, the JTWC recorded no tropical cyclone development in the month of July, the first such occurrence since reliable records began. Despite that, this season featured Super Typhoon Goni, which made the strongest landfall worldwide in terms of 1-minute wind speed. The season's first named tropical cyclone, Vongfong, developed on May 8, while the season's last named tropical cyclone, Krovanh, dissipated on December 24. However, the season's last system was an unnamed tropical depression which dissipated on December 29.

Severe Tropical Storm Pakhar, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Jolina, was a strong tropical storm that impacted South China during late August 2017. This storm followed Typhoon Hato which affected the area a few days prior. Pakhar was the fourteenth named storm of the Pacific typhoon season. Pakhar developed from a tropical depression to the east of Luzon during August 24, and intensified into a tropical storm later that day. Pakhar made landfall over in Aurora on August 25. Pakhar gradually intensified and peaked as a severe tropical storm by August 27, making landfall over Taishan, Jiangmen in Southern China.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tropical Storm Haikui</span> Pacific tropical storm in 2017

Tropical Storm Haikui, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Salome, was a weak tropical cyclone that affected the Philippine archipelagos of Luzon and Visayas. Forming as the twenty-fourth named storm of the 2017 typhoon season, Haikui developed as a tropical depression to the east of Samar on November 9. Traversing some Philippine islands, the system gradually intensified into a named tropical storm by November 10. In that same day, Haikui emerged to the South China Sea. By November 12, the Japan Meteorological History downgraded the storm into a tropical depression. The storm dissipated on November 13, while meteorologists from the USA recorded the storm until November 14.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2021 Pacific typhoon season</span>

The 2021 Pacific typhoon season was the second consecutive to have below average tropical cyclone activity, with twenty-two named storms, and was the least active since 2011. Nine became typhoons, and five of those intensified into super typhoons. This low activity was caused by a strong La Niña that had persisted from the previous year. The season's first named storm, Dujuan, developed on February 16, while the last named storm, Rai, dissipated on December 21. The season's first typhoon, Surigae, reached typhoon status on April 16. It became the first super typhoon of the year on the next day, also becoming the strongest tropical cyclone in 2021. Surigae was also the most powerful tropical cyclone on record in the Northern Hemisphere for the month of April. Typhoons In-fa and Rai are responsible for more than half of the total damage this season, adding up to a combined total of $2.02 billion.

The 2022 Pacific typhoon season was the third consecutive season to have below average tropical cyclone activity, with twenty-five named storms forming. Of the tropical storms, ten became typhoons, and three would intensify into super typhoons. The season saw near-average activity by named storm count, although many of the storms were weak and short-lived, particularly towards the end of the season. This low activity was caused by an unusually strong La Niña that had persisted from 2020. The season's first named storm, Malakas, developed on April 6, while the last named storm, Pakhar, dissipated on December 12. The season's first typhoon, Malakas, reached typhoon status on April 12. The season ran throughout 2022, though most tropical cyclones typically develop between May and October. Tropical storms Megi and Nalgae were responsible for more than half of the casualties, while typhoons Hinnamnor and Nanmadol both caused $1 billion in damages.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Hagupit (2020)</span> Pacific typhoon in 2020

Typhoon Hagupit, known in the Philippines as Severe Tropical Storm Dindo, was a Category 1 typhoon that heavily impacted Eastern China and South Korea in August 2020. It was the fourth named storm and the second typhoon of the annual typhoon season. The JMA began monitoring a tropical depression that developed in the Philippine Sea on July 30, with PAGASA assigning the name “Dindo” to the storm, later that day it strengthened into a tropical storm, according to the JMA. PAGASA issued its final advisory on Dindo early on August 3, as it moved out of their area of responsibility. Hagupit intensified into a typhoon on August 3, before making landfall in Wenzhou, China at 19:30 UTC that day at peak intensity. Hagupit subsequently weakened over China, before degenerating into an extratropical low on August 5. Hagupit's remnants persisted for another several days, as the storm moved eastward, before dissipating south of Alaska on August 14.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tropical Storm Sinlaku (2020)</span> Pacific tropical storm in 2020

Tropical Storm Sinlaku was a weak tropical cyclone that impacted Vietnam, Thailand and Laos in August 2020. Beginning as a tropical depression on July 31 in the South China Sea, Sinlaku was the fifth storm of the 2020 Pacific typhoon season. It gradually organized as it took a slow west-northwest course, strengthening into a tropical storm the following day despite its monsoonal structure. The storm subsequently made landfall in Vietnam as a broad but weak tropical storm. Persistent land interaction weakened Sinlaku, leading to its dissipation on August 3.
