June was first monitored by both the Fleet Weather Center (now Joint Typhoon Warning Center) and the Japan Meteorological Center (JMA), with winds of 50 knots (93 km/h; 58 mph) and a pressure of 1,004 millibars (29.6 inHg) by 06:00 UTC of September 4. At this time, the detected system is moving northwest before steering to the west by the same time on the next day. Six hours later, the FWC upgraded the system into a modern-day Category 1 typhoon while situated to the north-northeast of Guam. As it started to dive southwestwards, it continued to strengthen and from 18:00 UTC that day until 06:00 UTC on September 6, June underwent deepening of its central pressure, bottoming from 996 to 970 millibars (29.4 to 28.6 inHg). The typhoon then strengthened into a Category 2 system, six hours later and kept this designation until it rapidly intensified to a major Category 4 storm by September 7. However, June slightly weakened by the middle of the day, being degraded into a Category 3 cyclone by September 8. Despite the findings of the FWC, the JMA found the typhoon even stronger than earlier, with 910 millibars (27 inHg) being reported at this time. Continued weakening took place before abruptly restrengthening while due northeast of Manila in the Philippines. By the next day, the typhoon further reintensified into a Category 4 typhoon but the JMA analysed the system as a weakened storm with a pressure of 925 millibars (27.3 inHg). On 06:00 UTC, June again weakened below that status while traveling northwestwards to north-nortwestwards. [2] [3]

Reconnaissance aircraft examined the system by September 10, and found that June has nearly the same size as Grace in that season, with over 300-mile radius. [4] Its rapid intensification were also unexpected, according to weathermen at the Fleet Weather Central. [5] Starting by 12:00 UTC of September 10, June further degraded into a Category 1 typhoon and this remained until 18:00 UTC of the next day. The typhoon then, for the third and last time intensified again to a Category 4 typhoon by September 12 while still moving northwestwards before turning towards the north, aiming at the main Japanese islands. The storm's size further grew to 600 miles around that day, with meteorologists from Japan comparing the storm to the deadly 1934 Muroto typhoon. [2] [3] [6] It then moved just west of Yakushima Island before making landfall over Shimonoseki City in Yamaguchi Prefecture by the night of September 13. By the next day, it then moved over the Sea of Japan, where, according to FWC it was downgraded into a tropical storm before proceeding northwards and make landfall at 12:00 UTC on the next day somewhere over Primorsky Krai in now-Russia. On September 15, the FWC reported that the system degenerated into a “deep” extratropical low further inland. The agency would stop monitor the storm at 12:00 UTC of September 15; however, the JMA continued to track the typhoon's remnants until the same time of the next day. [2] [3]

Effects

Japan

Storm warnings were issued for the Okinawan Islands as early as September 10 and over the island of Kyushu due to June as early as September 11. [4] [7] Military installations by the American and Japanese troops were also readied for the approaching storm. Their equipments were also sheltered. [6] The storm also threatened the attacks from the Chinese Civil War, which is occurring at that time. [8] Air Force bases of the Far East troops were also placed on an alert status. The Japanese Red Cross and other soldiers were also alerted of the storm. [9] Weights were also placed on other small or easily damaged establishments due to the storm. Basic needs such as drinking water, food and medical attentions were also addressed. However, American meteorologists forecasted that the Tokyo-Yokohama region will be spared over the full brunt of the storm. The southern portion of the Korean Peninsula were also forecasted by Japanese weathermen to be affected. [9] Rescue workers across Tokyo were also warned of possible impacts from June in the city, with winds up to 50 miles per hour (80 km/h). 350 individuals from Hōfu and Chugoku Bay's small island of Etajima were also sheltered. Thousands across Shikoku and Kyushu were also immediately evacuated due to June. Over Camp Bofu at Kokura, 49 children and women were asked to move out of the area, from the order of a high-ranked military officer. [10] [11] Over 120,000 individuals across Miyazaki, Miyakonojo and Nobeoka were also sheltered to safety. [12]

Described as the strongest typhoon to hit Japan since the 1934 Muroto typhoon, [12] Ten-foot rough waves from June caused breaches on a seawall elsewhere on Kyushu, according to the United Press (UP). However weatherman from USA questioned this claim, saying that the typhoon is still far away from Japan. Nevertheless, Okinawa was impacted by 60 miles per hour (97 km/h) wind gusts from June's outer bands. [6] First reports from the storm in Kyushu and Shikoku from the Japanese National Police registered one death and missing each and three injuries somewhere the aforementioned regions. 2,781 houses were inundated with floodwaters while 85 were either wrecked or sustained damages. [9] On the next day, the death toll rose to 22 and the missing at 19. Many rescues were also conducted over the villages and areas that are the most impacted by June. The storm's rainfall also disrupted the ongoing strike by the country's national employees over the military bases in Japan's south. The western half of Japan were skirted by the typhoon's fury as it slowly weakened upon moving inland. Many highways, bridges and communication lines were also damaged. However, no damages were reported on military bases of Americans and Japanese. [10] Shipping operations were disrupted in the country's northern portions. On September 15, the death count rose to 47, with unofficial toll of 92 from Mainichi, a Japanese newspaper. 35 of them were in Minakima, Kyushu alone due to the swelling of Kuma River. The construction ministry of the country also placed the first estimates of the damages in government establishments and equipments from the typhoon to be at $4 million (1954 USD). Cloudy weather with some downpour were also experienced in some areas of Siberia due to the remnants of June, including Vladivostok. [13] Miyakonojō registered a rainfall amount of 679.6 millimetres (26.76 in) from the system, while Uwajima, Ehime got 316.7 millimetres (12.47 in). Overall, 107 were confirmed to have been killed due to June, with 37 missing. 39,855 homes across the country were completely leveled while 181,380 of them were flooded. Over 61,722 hectares (152,520 acres) of farmland were destroyed while 688 marine vessels sustained damages. Along with Typhoon Lorna, June caused over $300 million worth of damages. [14] [15] [16]

Korean Peninsula

The Korean Peninsula also didn't escape June's impacts, where areas over the region received torrential rainfall from the storm. [13] Before noon by September 14, the Yomsok-chon River over Pyeongtaek overflowed due to the typhoon's rainfall. This incident forced the troops of Republic of Korea and United States’ air base to move into a higher place. Roadways leading to the area were flooded, as well as bridges. Two water reservoirs somewhere around the peninsula were also reported to be nearly overflowing due to the downpour. [17] Around Seoul, soldiers there and civilians were also alerted of the Han River increasing its water level for the second time after it did so in the morning of September 15. Over 17 feet (5.2 m) were seen in the reservoir. The now-Seoul Incheon International Airport also prepared its manpower in case of possible evacuations. [18] An eastern small area to the Korean Demilitarized Zone’s south received a rainfall amount of 35.5 inches (900 mm) from the reports of the engineers from the Eighth United States Army, which would make the typhoon the fourth-wettest tropical cyclone across the modern-day South Korea. [19] Ulleungdo Island, a small volcanic island registered the highest wind speed to be recorded in the mainland at that time, 45 metres per second (150 ft/s) before it was surpassed in 2010 by Typhoon Prapiroon. [20] On September 16, stranded soldiers at the Camp Taro Leaf somewhere the peninsula were brought food via air, as highways were still not passable. [21]

Typhoon Shanshan, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Luis, was a strong typhoon that affected parts of East Asia in late September 2006. The 13th named storm of the 2006 Pacific typhoon season, Typhoon Shanshan was also the seventh typhoon of the year operationally recognised by the Japan Meteorological Agency. In post-operational analysis Shanshan became the eighth typhoon of the year when Typhoon Maria was added to the list. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center considered Shanshan the 13th tropical storm and eighth typhoon of the season, a Category 4-equivalent typhoon in terms of 1-minute average wind speed. The name Shanshan was submitted to the naming list by Hong Kong and is a girls' given name.

Typhoon Nabi, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Jolina, was a powerful typhoon that struck southwestern Japan in September 2005. The 14th named storm of the 2005 Pacific typhoon season, Nabi formed on August 29 to the east of the Northern Mariana Islands. It moved westward and passed about 55 km (34 mi) north of Saipan on August 31 as an intensifying typhoon. On the next day, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center upgraded the storm to super typhoon status, with winds equivalent to that of a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale. The Japan Meteorological Agency estimated peak ten-minute winds of 175 km/h (109 mph) on September 2. Nabi weakened while curving to the north, striking the Japanese island of Kyushu on September 6. After brushing South Korea, the storm turned to the northeast, passing over Hokkaido before becoming extratropical on September 8, before dissipating on September 12.

Typhoon Angela, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Rubing, was an intense tropical cyclone that formed in late September 1989. The storm developed from a tropical disturbance in the monsoon trough and moved generally westward throughout its duration. The storm ultimately peaked in intensity as a super typhoon and struck northern Luzon in the Philippines. After weakening and traversing the South China Sea, Angela bypassed Hainan to the south and struck Vietnam before dissipating. The storm caused severe damage and 119 fatalities in the Philippines. Thousands of houses were damaged, and hundreds of thousands of residents were impacted by the typhoon. Monetary damage is placed at $8 million.

The 2019 Pacific typhoon season was the costliest Pacific typhoon season on record, just ahead of the previous year and 2023. The season featured fairly above-average tropical cyclone activity for the second consecutive year, producing 29 named storms, 17 typhoons, and five super typhoons. The season's first named storm, Pabuk, reached tropical storm status on January 1, becoming the earliest-forming tropical storm of the western Pacific Ocean on record, breaking the previous record that was held by Typhoon Alice in 1979. The season's first typhoon, Wutip, reached typhoon status on February 20. Wutip further intensified into a super typhoon on February 23, becoming the strongest February typhoon on record, and the strongest tropical cyclone recorded in February in the Northern Hemisphere. The season's last named storm, Phanfone, dissipated on December 29 after it made landfall in the Philippines.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2020 Pacific typhoon season</span> Typhoon season in the Western Pacific Ocean

The 2020 Pacific typhoon season was the first of an ongoing series of below average Pacific typhoon seasons, and became the first with below-average tropical cyclone activity since 2014, with 23 named storms, 10 of which became typhoons and only 2 became super typhoons. This low activity was a consequence of La Niña that persisted from the summer of the year. It had the fifth-latest start in the basin on record, slightly behind 1973, and was the first to start that late since 2016. The first half of the season was unusually inactive, with only four systems, two named storms and one typhoon at the end of July. Additionally, the JTWC recorded no tropical cyclone development in the month of July, the first such occurrence since reliable records began. The season's first named tropical cyclone, Vongfong, developed on May 8, while the season's last named tropical cyclone, Krovanh, dissipated on December 24. However, the season's last system was an unnamed tropical depression which dissipated on December 29.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Pat (1985)</span> Pacific typhoon in 1985

Typhoon Pat, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Luming, was a powerful typhoon that struck Japan during the summer of 1985. Pat is also one of three storms in the Western Pacific which interacted with each other. Originating from a monsoon trough towards the end of August, Pat first formed on August 24 several hundred miles east of the Philippines. It gradually intensified, and two days later, Pat was upgraded into a tropical storm. The cyclone initially moved east-northeast while continuing to deepen. However, Pat leveled off in intensity on August 27. After turning northwest, Pat attained typhoon intensity on August 28. Pat accelerated towards the north, and reached its peak intensity of 80 mph (130 km/h) on August 30. The next day, the storm crossed the southern Japanese islands and entered the Sea of Japan. Gradually weakening, Pat transitioned into an extratropical cyclone later on August 31. Early the next day, the storm moved ashore along northeastern Japan. The system dissipated on September 2 after reentering the Pacific Ocean. A total of 23 perished due to Typhoon Pat and 12 others were rendered as missing. Additionally, 79 people were injured. Furthermore, 38 houses in Japan were demolished, 110 were damaged, and over 2,000 were flooded. More than 160,000 homes lost power. A total of 165 flights were cancelled.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Joan (1959)</span> Pacific typhoon in 1959

Typhoon Joan was an intense typhoon that caused minor damages in relative to the strength of the typhoon. Joan was the strongest typhoon of 1959 Pacific typhoon season, and one of the most intense Pacific typhoons on record. Joan formed from a surface center to the northeast of Guam on August 23, in which Japan Meteorological Agency began to track and classify the system as a tropical depression on the next day. A reconnaissance aircraft was sent to investigate the surface center and in 03:25 UTC on August 25 the surface center was classified as a tropical storm by Joint Typhoon Warning Center. The storm rapidly intensified into a typhoon in the same day it was formed. By the next three days as Joan tracks towards Taiwan, Joan explosively intensified to attain peak intensity with the pressure of 885 millibars (26.1 inHg), which is tied with Nina as the most intense Pacific typhoon on the record at the time. Shortly afterwards, Joan attained peak strength as a Category 5 equivalent super typhoon on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane scale with winds of 165 knots (190 mph) before making landfall in Taiwan as a 160 knots (180 mph) typhoon, which was according to JTWC is the strongest landfall in the recorded history at the time. After making landfall, Joan weakened into a 110 knots (130 mph) typhoon before making landfall on Fujian, China as a Category 2 equivalent typhoon on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane scale with winds of 95 knots (109 mph). Once onshore, Joan did not degenerate quickly as Joan remained as a tropical cyclone for about one day before transitioning into a extratropical cyclone in 18:00 UTC of August 31. Extratropical remnants of Joan quickly traversed through South Korea and Japan before being last noted on 18:00 UTC, September 2.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Abe (1990)</span> Pacific typhoon in 1990

Typhoon Abe, known as Typhoon Iliang in the Philippines, was the fourteenth named storm of 1990 Pacific typhoon season. Forming on August 23 from a tropical disturbance, the depression which would eventually develop into Typhoon Abe initially tracked in a steady west-northwestward direction. As a result of an intense monsoon surge, Abe's trajectory briefly changed to an eastward then northward path before returning to its original track. Abe only intensified by a small amount between 00:00 UTC August 24 and 06:00 UTC August 27 due to the disruptive effects of the surge, and on August 30, Abe peaked in intensity as a Category 2-equivalent typhoon on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane wind scale. After peaking in intensity, Abe crossed the Ryukyu Islands and the East China Sea, making landfall in China where it affected the provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu before entering the Yellow Sea, crossing South Korea, and finally transitioning into an extratropical cyclone.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Charlotte (1959)</span> Pacific typhoon in 1959

Typhoon Charlotte was a damaging typhoon that struck Okinawa during the 1959 Pacific typhoon season. An area of low pressure developed in early October, and it became a tropical depression on October 9. The depression strengthened to a tropical storm one day later, and it received the name Charlotte from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). The system strengthened quickly and became a typhoon eighteen hours later. Charlotte continued to rapidly strengthen to its peak of 260 km/h (160 mph) on October 13. The typhoon began to weaken afterwards, and it traveled south of Okinawa on October 16. The typhoon weakened to a tropical storm on October 19 as it began its extratropical transition. The storm became extratropical later that day, and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) ceased tracking the system on October 20.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2022 Pacific typhoon season</span> Typhoon season in the Western Pacific Ocean

The 2022 Pacific typhoon season was the third consecutive season to have below average tropical cyclone activity, with twenty-five named storms forming. Of the tropical storms, ten became typhoons, and three would intensify into super typhoons. The season saw near-average activity by named storm count, although many of the storms were weak and short-lived, particularly towards the end of the season. This low activity was caused by an unusually strong La Niña that had persisted from 2020. The season's first named storm, Malakas, developed on April 6, while the last named storm, Pakhar, dissipated on December 12. The season's first typhoon, Malakas, reached typhoon status on April 12. The season ran throughout 2022, though most tropical cyclones typically develop between May and October. Tropical storms Megi and Nalgae were responsible for more than half of the casualties, while typhoons Hinnamnor and Nanmadol both caused $1 billion in damages.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Emma (1959)</span> Pacific typhoon in 1959

Typhoon Emma was a strong typhoon that struck Okinawa during the 1959 Pacific typhoon season. An area of severe weather formed near Kwajalein Atoll on October 30, and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) began tracking it as a tropical depression on November 1. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center followed suit on November 5 after finding a closed circulation, and the depression received the name Emma. The depression strengthened into a tropical storm west of Guam on November 6 and gradually gained strength. Emma became a typhoon on November 11 near Luzon, and it reached its peak sustained winds of 205 km/h; 125 mph (110 kn) later that day. The typhoon turned northeastwards and grazed Okinawa the next day. Emma steadily weakened and became extratropical on November 13, and the JMA ceased tracking the storm on November 15.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Haishen (2020)</span> Pacific typhoon in 2020

Typhoon Haishen, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Kristine, was a powerful tropical cyclone that became the first super typhoon of the 2020 Pacific typhoon season. Being also the tenth named storm and this season's fifth typhoon, Haishen's origins can be tracked back to a disorganised low pressure area situated near Guam. While the disturbance tracked south-westward and quickly organised, the JTWC issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert (TCFA) on the system, and a day later, on September 1, the system became a tropical depression. The depression strengthened into Tropical Storm Haishen according to the Japan Meteorological Agency as it moved southwestward. At about 12:00 UTC on September 2, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geological and Astronomical Services Administration indicated that Haishen had entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility and was subsequently named Kristine. Later that day, Haishen became a typhoon. Intensification on September 3 was significant. Drifting northwestward into extremely favorable conditions, Haishen became a category 3-equivalent typhoon, acquiring a pinhole eye, before undergoing an eyewall replacement cycle (EWRC). Strengthening resumed soon after and the JTWC assessed wind speeds of 135 kn as it peaked as a powerful Category 4 super typhoon and had attained a new, symmetrical, clear eye.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Jane</span> 1950 Pacific typhoon

Typhoon Jane was a catastrophic and deadly tropical cyclone that left significant effects to Japan during the 1950 Pacific typhoon season. It caused over 398 reported deaths and 141 to be missing, mainly due to the landslides and flooding. It also destroyed some battle and cargo ships. The sixth reported typhoon of the season, Jane was first mentioned in weather maps as a tropical depression to the east of the Philippines. It quickly strengthened to a tropical storm as it moved to the northwest. It then curved to the northeast, reaching its peak intensity of 185 km/h before weakening and striking Minami in Tokushima Prefecture on September 3 as a Category 2 typhoon. It quickly weakened, passing through the Awaji Island and Kobe before becoming extratropical in the Sea of Japan on the same day. The extratropical remnants of the system persisted until it was no longer tracked on September 7.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Dinah (1952)</span> Pacific typhoon in 1952

Typhoon Dinah was a tropical cyclone that brought heavy damages to Japan, while leaving 65 fatalities and 70 to be missing, all in that country alone. It is also one of the disasters that happened in the country during the Showa 27 era. The second typhoon of the 1952 Pacific typhoon season, Dinah was first mentioned in weather maps as a tropical depression to the east of Visayas. It gradually organized, becoming a tropical storm on June 21 as it skirted the northeastern Philippines, with the Fleet Weather Center naming it Dinah. It strengthened further to a minimal typhoon as it moved through the Nansei Islands on June 22, before reaching its peak intensity of 140 km/h, as estimated by the Fleet Center. It then weakened shortly, before passing near Shikoku on the next day, then making landfall through the southern part of the Kii Peninsula before gradually weakened further and started to undergo extratropical transition as it moved out of the country on June 24. It then became fully extratropical on the next day.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Grace (1954)</span> Pacific typhoon in 1954

Typhoon Grace was a strong typhoon that severely impacted the mainland Japan, whilst the Ryukyu Islands also receiving minor damages. The fourth storm to be monitored by the Fleet Weather Central during the 1954 Pacific typhoon season, Grace was first monitored by the FWC as a tropical storm in the Philippine Sea on the night of August 11. The christened storm then kept its status while tracking northwestwards and due westwards. Two days later, the agency upgraded it into a typhoon before turning towards the Ryukyu Islands by August 14, where its eye passed just near Okinawa Island. Grace peaked as a Category 3 typhoon into the modern-day Saffir–Simpson scale two times; upon entering the East China Sea and just near landfall over the mainland Japan. Upon doing it so, it rapidly weakened and degenerated into a low-pressure system on August 19. However, the JMA tracked the storm's remnants until August 23.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Lorna</span> Pacific typhoon in 1954

Typhoon Lorna was a strong Category 3 typhoon that severely impacted some areas of Honshu Island, especially Yokohama and Tokyo while also causing damages across the Northern Mariana Islands. The second typhoon to hit Japan after Typhoon June in September, it is the eleventh system to be monitored by the FWC during the 1954 Pacific typhoon season. The storm was first tracked by the JMA on September 10, before the FWC followed suit on the next day. After intensifying into a tropical storm by the latter time, it struggled to strengthen further until it intensified into a modern-day Category 1 typhoon on the Saffir–Simpson scale. It then passed just north of the Marianas around September 13, before turning northwestwards on the next day. It then continued to strengthen into a Category 2 typhoon at the morning of September 15 before becoming a Category 3 system on the afternoon of that day. It remained in this strength before it degraded below that status around the next day. On September 17, Lorna was seized by a frontal system, forcing it to move north-northeastwards and make landfall over the Boso Peninsula on the next day. Its eye reportedly passed through Yokohama at that day. It then rapidly degenerated into an extratropical system as it pulled away from Japan, being last monitored by the JMA on September 22.
