The UCAL basketball championship is the basketball championship of the Universities and Colleges Athletic League (UCAL). It was first established as the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) in 2016, with its inaugural season opening on October 8 of that year. [1] [2]
In 2024, the UCBL would become the basis of the UCAL when it became a fully-fledged collegiate association. The UCBL now operates as the UCAL's basketball championship. [3]
The UCBL was established in 2016 by Universities and Colleges Athletic League, Inc. under president Franklin Evidente. The league put a focus on television coverage with the aim of giving its member institutions more exposure. The league also put officiating as another focal point, by implementing a stricter system. The inaugural season of the UCBL began on October 8 of that year with seven member schools: Bulacan State University (BulSU), Centro Escolar University (CEU), Colegio de San Lorenzo (CDSL), Diliman College (DC), Olivarez College (OC), Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP), and University of Batangas (UB). All games are held at the Paco Arena in Manila every Monday and Thursday, with the live telecast of the games are aired on Smart Sports through livestreaming coverage provided by Smart Communications.

The Olivarez College, also known as simply Olivarez or OC, is a private, nonsectarian college along Dr. A. Santos Avenue, Parañaque, Philippines that offers academic programs in basic education, junior and high school, undergraduate, graduate and technical education levels. Founded in 1976, Olivarez College is the only school in Parañaque City that is accredited by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) and the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities - Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA). It is a member of the Universities and Colleges Athletic Association (UCAA) and National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA).
The LPU Pirates and Lady Pirates are the athletic teams that represent the Lyceum of the Philippines University and play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines), the oldest athletic association in the Philippines. Lyceum has collegiate men's varsity teams that participate in fifteen sporting events of the NCAA. They are also popularly known as the "Pirata ng Intramuros". The Father Edgar Martin Basketball Invitational Tournament, better known as the Fr. Martin Cup, is a pre-season collegiate basketball tournament in the Philippines. It gathers teams from various collegiate leagues, including the UAAP and NCAA, in a basketball tournament just before the start of the collegiate season. It was named after Fr. Edgar Martin, S.J., the former athletic moderator at the Ateneo de Manila University, and former Secretary-General of the Basketball Association of the Philippines. The tournament was established in 1994.
