The University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy is the pharmacy school of the University of Minnesota. It has two campus locations: in Minneapolis and Duluth, Minnesota. The University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy is part of one of the largest Academic Health Centers (AHC) [1] in the United States. This center allows health professionals to train collaboratively during the course of their training programs. The AHC comprises the College of Pharmacy, School of Dentistry, Medical School, School of Nursing, School of Public Health, and the College of Veterinary Medicine:. [2]

History

The University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy opened in 1892 with Frederick J. Wulling serving as Dean. [3] Only six of the original 15 students completed the two-year program on time and were granted a pharmaceutical doctor degree in 1894. Three years later the first women were admitted to the college, all of whom graduated.

Wulling established a nationally recognized medicinal plant garden at the University. He dedicated two acres to the exclusive cultivation of the heart stimulant digitalis, which helped produce over 20,000 bottles of tincture during World War I. [4]

The Duluth program began in 2003 and was intended to address the severe shortage of pharmacists in Minnesota, especially in Greater Minnesota, at that time. [6]

Academics

The University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy offers the Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD), Master of Science (MS) and Doctoral (PhD) degrees, and dual-degree programs for students interested in combining their pharmacy education with a degree in public health (PharmD/MPH), or business (PharmD/MBA).

In addition, the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy also has pharmacy residency as part of its education programs.

The Twin Cities campus enrolls approximately 100 PharmD students per class, while the Duluth campus enrolls approximately 50 students per class. [7]

In 2024, U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy sixth in the United States. [8]

A Bachelor of Pharmacy is a graduate academic degree in the field of pharmacy. In many countries, this degree is a prerequisite for registration to practice as a pharmacist. UIC Retzky College of Pharmacy at the University of Illinois Chicago is one of the oldest pharmacy schools in the US and oldest unit of the University of Illinois system.

The Washington State University College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is one of two PharmD granting institutions within the state of Washington. In 2013, the college and its programs were relocated to the WSU Health Sciences Spokane campus, which also houses the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine and College of Nursing. Along with their Doctor of Pharmacy program, the college offers dual degrees and certificates in engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, communications and an MBA. To better serve rural areas of Washington state, in 2015 the college established its extension in Yakima, located in central Washington. The program is housed in the Pacific Northwest University campus.

The USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is the pharmacy school of the University of Southern California, originally established in 1905 as USC College of Pharmacy.

The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy is an accredited pharmacy school located in Iowa City, Iowa. The college offers three undergraduate certificates, four areas of graduate study leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree, and a four-year professional program leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree. University of Iowa Pharmaceuticals (UIP), an FDA-registered manufacturer, is housed within the college. UIP is the largest and longest-running university-affiliated pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in the U.S.
