An impeachment inquiry against Donald Trump, the 45th and incumbent president of the United States, was initiated on September 24, 2019, by Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. It began after a whistleblower alleged that President Trump and top government officials had pressured the leaders of foreign nations, most notably Ukraine, to investigate political opponents of Trump, abusing the power of the presidency to advance his own personal interests. These allegations have been corroborated by testimony so far by U.S. top envoy to Ukraine Bill Taylor, top Pentagon official who was overseeing U.S. policy regarding Ukraine Laura Cooper, White House administration official Fiona Hill, at least six additional White House officials, and a large number of other witnesses. The reports implicated Trump, his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, Gordon Sondland, Kurt Volker, Lev Parnas, Igor Fruman, and other individuals as part of a quid-pro-quo campaign to pressure the Ukrainian government to take actions which would be helpful to Trump's 2020 presidential campaign. Additional allegations of misconduct emerged in the days after the announcement of the impeachment inquiry.

The 2019 Chilean protests are ongoing civil protests throughout Chile in response to a raise in the Santiago Metro's subway fare, increased cost of living, and prevalent inequality in the country. The protests began in Chile's capital, Santiago, as a coordinated fare evasion campaign by secondary school students which led to spontaneous takeovers of the city's main train stations and open confrontations with the Chilean Police. On the 18th of October, the situation escalated as organized bands of protesters rose in rebellion across the city, seizing many stations of the Santiago Metro network and disabling them with extensive infrastructure damage, ultimately disabling the network in its entirety. In total, 81 stations have been damaged, with 17 burned down. On the same day, President of Chile Sebastián Piñera announced a state of emergency, authorizing the deployment of Chilean Army forces across the main regions to enforce order and prevent the destruction of public property, and invoked before the courts the Ley de Seguridad del Estado against dozens of detainees. A curfew was declared on 19 October in the Greater Santiago area.
