Vidyapeeth Highschool Kolhapur, is a Marathi school located in the southern city of Maharashtra [1] - Kolhapur. Vidyapeeth has the merit of having many students in the State Merit List year after year. The school was started in 1917 by Shri. Tophkhane-guruji on a land donated by the King of Kolhapur Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj. The land that was previously used as his stable. Since then the school has produced many notable alumni in different fields. The school is located next to Mahalaxmi Temple in Kolhapur and also has a land outside the city in Tapovan. Rana Thakur Yeshwantsinh (Yeshwant) Kelavkar was appointed by Late Sh. Ch. Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur as the first founding Principal and therefore in his remembrance and for his outstanding contributions to the development of the school; 19 January is celebrated as Kelavkar Din (Day) every year.

Shahu of the Bhonsle dynasty of Marathas was a Raja and the first Maharaja (1900-1922) of the Indian princely state of Kolhapur. Rajarshi Shahu was considered a true democrat and social reformer. Shahu Maharaj was an able ruler who was associated with many progressive policies during his rule. From his coronation in 1894 till his demise in 1922, he worked for the cause of the lower caste subjects in his state. Kolhapur State or Kolhapur Kingdom (1710–1949) was a Maratha princely State of British India, under the Deccan Division of the Bombay Presidency, and later the Deccan States Agency. It was considered the most important of the Maratha principalities with the others being Baroda State, Gwalior State and Indore State. Its rulers, of the Bhonsle dynasty, were entitled to a 19-gun salute – thus Kolhapur was also known as a 19-gun state. The state flag was a swallow-tailed saffron pennant.

In 1941 PK Shinde was Specially appointed as Chief Engineer due to his technical competency and experience. The dam is known for the Hydraulic technology. Today Radhanagri Dam is the main reason for flourishing agriculture, sugarcane and jaggery industry in Kolhapur District. The water need of Municipal Corporation of Kolhapur is satisfied through this dam. Radhanagri Dam supports large variety of Flaura n Fauna. It is surrounded by dense forest and has wide variety of wildlife.

Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Terminus is the main railway terminus in the city of Kolhapur, India. It is the end point of the Miraj to Kolhapur railway line. It has a freight yard called Gur Market with a capacity of five freight trains nearly 4 km away from the station. Kolhapur is the centre of trade for southern Maharashtra with electrification between Miraj and Kolhapur. This station connects Kolhapur with major cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Delhi, and Dhanbad through express trains. Some important express trains are the Mahalaxmi Express (Kolhapur–Mumbai), Haripriya Express (Kolhapur–Tirupati), IRCTC also runs the tourist luxury train Deccan Odyssey at Kolhapur station. The Minister of Railways announced the Miraj–Kolhapur–Vaibhavwadi rail route and electrification of Kolhapur–Pune rail route in 2016–17. There are daily passenger shuttle services between Kolhapur, Miraj and Pune.
