As part of the first wave of podcasts to hit the internet, recording their first show shortly after New Years 2004, the Vikings, along with Madge Weinstein's "Yeast Radio" became the Chicago media's focal point illustrating "podcasting is the ideal field to bring a real voice back to the people." [1] Featured in Chicago magazine, The Red Eye, a cover article on New City, [1] and a feature interview on Ken Wilber's show "Integral Naked" [2] the Vikings were lauded as keeping "a new trend interesting instead of participating in the inevitable fight to make it yesterday’s news" by New City editors when they were chosen as Chicago's Favorite Podcast by editors and readers in 2005. [3] They were nominated for best adult podcast at PodCastAwards.com first annual awards, [4] and in 2008 they were reconfirmed as Chicago's Best Podcast being voted "Best Podcast" in the Chicago Reader's "Best Of Chicago 2008 Readers Poll." [5]

In 2005 the Viking Youth Power Hour became the first ever podcast to record their show on the playa at the Burning Man festival at Black Rock City, Nevada. Returning in 2006, the Vikings drove a 1991 Ford-Thomas school bus converted to run on Waste Vegetable Oil in order to raise awareness of alternative fuel sources. The Vikings also contributed to Burning Man Information Radio's first on-playa daily newscasts. [6]

The Viking Youth Power Hour covers current events. [7] Some of these efforts have included helping disseminate information on detailing 'astro turf' organizations efforts to undermine net neutrality, and issuing information on surviving possible future influenza outbreaks. [8] [9]

Burning Man

Burning Man is a festival focused on community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance held annually in the western United States. The event derives its name from its culmination: the symbolic burning of a large wooden effigy, referred to as the Man, that occurs on the penultimate night of Burning Man, which is the Saturday evening before Labor Day. The event has been located since 1991 at Black Rock City in northwestern Nevada, a temporary city erected in the Black Rock Desert about 100 miles (160 km) north-northeast of Reno. As outlined by Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey in 2004, the event is guided by ten principles: radical inclusion, gifting, decommodification, radical self-reliance, radical self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, leaving no trace, participation, and immediacy.

Podcasting, previously known as "audioblogging", has its roots dating back to the 1980s. With the advent of broadband Internet access and portable digital audio playback devices such as the iPod, podcasting began to catch hold in late 2004. Today there are more than 115,000 English-language podcasts available on the Internet, and dozens of websites available for distribution at little or no cost to the producer or listener. According to one survey in 2017, 42 million Americans above the age of 12 listen to podcasts on at least on a weekly basis.

Podcasting refers to the creation and regular distribution of podcasts through the Internet. Podcasts, which can include audio, video, PDF, and ePub files, are subscribed to and downloaded through web syndication or streamed online to a computer or mobile device. Subscribers are then able to view, listen to, and transfer the episodes to a variety of media players, or podcatchers. Though similar to radio, there is no larger regulatory group or oversight with podcasts. Instead, podcasts simply consist of the creators and their listeners.
