Geography

The hamlet of Virgil is located in the west-central part of the town of Virgil, in the valley of Virgil Creek, a west-flowing stream which is part of the Cayuga Lake watershed. New York State Routes 392 and 215 intersect at the center of the hamlet. Route 392 leads east 7 miles (11 km) to U.S. Route 11 in Messengerville, and west 6 miles (10 km) to NY Route 13 in the village of Dryden, while Route 215 leads north 6 miles (10 km) to Cortland, the county seat.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the Virgil CDP has a total area of 0.89 square miles (2.3 km2), all land. [2]

New York State Route 215 (NY 215) is a north–south state highway located entirely within Cortland County, New York, in the United States. It extends for just over 6 miles (10 km) from an intersection with NY 392 in the town of Virgil to a junction with NY 13 in the city of Cortland. NY 215 is largely a rural connector highway, except for the final 0.5-mile (0.8 km) in the city of Cortland. The entirety of NY 215 was originally part of NY 90. In the early 1980s, NY 90 was truncated north to its junction with U.S. Route 11 (US 11) and NY 41 in the village of Homer. Its former routing south of the city was redesignated as NY 215 and NY 392.

Kennedy is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Poland in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. The population was 465 at the 2010 census. From 1805–1841, the hamlet was known as Kennedy Mills, in honor of Thomas Ruston Kennedy, the founder of the local mills. The name was changed in 1841 to Kennedyville. Eleven years later, the name changed again, this time to Falconer in honor of Robert and William Falconer. In 1860, on the request of an Erie Railroad official, the hamlet became Kennedy. The name was promptly placed on the railroad station constructed in 1861.
