ViswaSanthi Foundation is a non-profit organization established by actor Mohanlal in the names of his parents Viswanathan and Santhakumari in 2015. [1] [2] It is registered as a Section-8 Company of the Companies Act 2013, under the name ViswaSanthi Development Foundation. [3] The foundation was started with the objective of creating and delivering high impact and focused programs to the under privileged sections of the society in the areas of health care and education. Activities

In 2018, Mohanlal met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and briefed about the foundation's social initiatives. [5] The foundation has sent relief materials to different parts of Kerala during 2018 [6] [7] and 2019 Kerala floods including new house to the family of a flood rescue operator [8] and children's education for one of the victims. [9] [10]

The foundation launched the Amrita-ViswaSanthi Health Care project to help children below the age of 18 years from socio-economically backward sections suffering from heart ailments and meet their heart surgery expenses in Amrita hospital. Simran, a five-year-old girl from a Bihar village, becomes the first non-Malayali beneficiary of this scheme. [11] [12] During COVID-19 pandemic in India, the foundation has donated PPE kits and N95 masks to healthcare workers and police officials in Kerala, [13] Tamil Nadu, [14] Pune [15] [16] and laptops, tablets and television sets for schools across Kerala. [17] The foundation had extended its support to BMC run hospitals in Mumbai by donating PPE kits to Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital and to healthcare workers in Andheri and Dharavi. [13]

The foundation donates an autonomous robot, KARMI-Bot, for the isolation ward at Government Medical College, Ernakulam, which helps to dispense food, medicine, collect the trash left away by COVID-19 patients, perform disinfection and enable video call between the doctors and patients. In May 2021, the foundation has provided beds with oxygen and ventilator support and portable X-ray machines to various hospitals in Kerala. They also provide support for the installation of Oxygen pipeline to two wards and Triage ward of Government Medical College, Ernakulam. [21] The foundation executes this ₹1.5 crore project with EY Global Delivery Services (EY GDS) and UST. [22] [23]

In April 2022, the foundation, with the support of EY GDS, chose 20 students from the 6th grade in tribal villages from Attappadi, to provide them with free education, mentorship and resources, for the next 15 years in order to secure their future. [24] [25]

In June 2023, the foundation, in association with EY GDS, established an automated drinking water plant to alleviate the water shortage faced by residents of ward-1 of Edathua gram panchayat in the Kuttanad region. The initiative aims to provide clean and safe drinking water to about 1000 individuals, a few schools and places of worship in the area. [26] [27]

In June 2024, the foundation has joined the ‘'Idukki Oru Midukki'’ project, coordinated by the Idukki district administration and the District Skill Committee. Mohanlal inaugurated a newly set up library at Anchuruli and also the distribution of adult diapers at a function in Thodupuzha. [28]

When the landslide hit the Wayanad district in July 2024, Mohanlal donated ₹25 lakhs to CMDRF. [29] He also visited the landslide-hit Wayanad as a Lieutenant Colonel (Hon) of Indian Territorial Army in August 2024 and announced ₹3 crores aid for the rehabilitation of the region from ViswaSanthi Foundation. [30] [31] Major Ravi, managing director of the foundation, said that the foundation will oversee the rebuilding of Mundakkai Government Lower Primary School, which was collapsed in the landslide. <i>Thanmathra</i> 2005 Indian film

Thanmathra is a 2005 Indian Malayalam-language drama film written and directed by Blessy, based on Padmarajan's short story "Orma". It portrays the effects of Alzheimer's disease on the life of Ramesan Nair (Mohanlal) and his family. The film collected three times its budget at the box-office and completed 150 days run. Thanmathra won five Kerala State Film Awards, which includes the Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and a Special Mention Award for the debutant actor Arjun Lal. It also won the Best Feature Film in Malayalam Award at the 53rd National Film Awards.

Kerala is situated between the Lakshadweep Sea to the west and the Western Ghats to the east. Kerala's coast runs some 590 km in length, while the state itself varies between 35–120 km in width. K. J. Baby was an Indian writer and film director from the Kerala state. He was a Dalit writer and followed left ideology. He worked for Tribal education throughout his life. Baby's body was discovered from a fall near his house in Wayanad on 1 September 2024. He was 70.

<i>Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol</i> 2016 film by Jibu Jacob

Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol is a 2017 Indian Malayalam-language domestic drama film directed by Jibu Jacob and written by M. Sindhuraj. It is loosely based on the Malayalam short story "Pranayopanishath" by V. J. James. Produced and distributed by Sophia Paul through Weekend Blockbusters, the film stars Mohanlal and Meena as panchayat secretary Ulahannan and his wife Annyamma. The soundtrack features songs composed by Bijibal and M. Jayachandran, and a film score by Bijibal. The film is about Ulahannan, a man having a midlife crisis, who rediscovers himself and overcomes boredom in his routine life.

On 16 August 2018, severe floods affected the south Indian state Kerala, due to unusually heavy rainfall during the monsoon season. It was the worst flood in Kerala in nearly a century. Over 483 people died, and about one million people were evacuated, mainly from Chengannur, Pandanad, Edanad, Aranmula, Kozhencherry, Ayiroor, Ranni, Pandalam, Kuttanad, Malappuram, Aluva, Chalakudy, Thrissur, Thiruvalla, Eraviperoor, Vallamkulam, North Paravur, Chendamangalam, Chellanam, Vypin Island, and Palakkad. All 14 districts of the state were placed on red alert. According to the Kerala government, one-sixth of the total population of Kerala was directly affected by the floods and related incidents. The Indian government declared it a Level 3 Calamity, or "calamity of a severe nature". It is the worst flood in Kerala after the great flood of '99 that took place in 1924.

The first case of the COVID-19 pandemic in Kerala was confirmed in Thrissur on 30 January 2020. As of 5 April 2022, there have been 65,34,352 confirmed cases, test positivity rate is at 2.04%, with 64,62,811 (98.91%) recoveries and 68,197 (1.04%) deaths in the state.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2020 Kerala floods</span> Indian flood

During the heavy rainfall over the monsoon period from 1 June to 18 August 2020, all 14 districts in Kerala were affected with 104 dead and 40 injured. Four districts in Kerala were flooded on 7 August 2020. Major reported incidents in relation to flooding include a landslide in Idukki district on 6 August, claiming 66 lives and an Air India plane crash that caused the death of 21 people. The 2020 flood in Kerala marked the third year in a row of severe monsoon flooding.

The 2024 Wayanad landslides were a series of landslides that occurred in Punjirimattom, Mundakkai, Chooralmala, and Vellarimala villages in Meppadi panchayat, Vythiri taluk in Wayanad district, Kerala, India in the early hours of 30 July 2024. The landslides were caused by heavy rains that caused hillsides to collapse, destroying the areas below. The disaster was one of the deadliest in Kerala's history, with reports of over 420 fatalities, 397 injuries, and 118 people missing. Deforestation, seismic sensitivity, poor building construction, and global warming have been identified as possible causes for the landslides and fatalities.
