The Waikato Institute of Technology, also known as Wintec, is an institute of technology based in New Zealand's Waikato region. Wintec offers over 130 degrees, diplomas and certificates. Wintec specialises in applied tertiary training for nurses, social workers, midwives, graphic designers, performing artists, engineers, trades people, early childhood teachers, horticulturists, arborists and sport scientists. Programmes range from Level 1 to Level 9.

Wintec has 13,000 full and part-time students. Over 25% of Wintec students identify as Māori.

History

The institution was founded in 1924 as Hamilton Technical College. The name was changed to Waikato Technical Institute in 1968 and to The Waikato Polytechnic in 1987. The name changed again in 2001, to The Waikato Institute of Technology. [1] On 1 April 2020, Waikato Institute of Technology was subsumed into New Zealand Institute of Skills & Technology alongside the 15 other Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs). [2]

Locations

Wintec has three main campuses in Hamilton as well as facilities at Thames and the Otorohanga Trade Training Centre.

The institute uses three additional campuses in the Waikato region.

Wintec offers student accommodation at the City and Rotokauri campuses. [3] [4] [5] [6]

Structure and governance

Wintec's executive team is made up of 11 executives, including the Chief Executive. The chief executive reports to Wintec's governing body, the Wintec Council.

The Waikato Times is a daily newspaper published in Hamilton, New Zealand and owned by media business Stuff Ltd. It has a circulation to the greater Waikato region and became a tabloid paper in 2018.

Southern Institute of Technology

Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) is a public tertiary education institute, established in 1971. It is one of the New Zealand’s largest institutes of technology, with 13,758 enrollees in 2017 contributing to a total of 4,922 Equivalent Full Time students (EFTs), 3,989 domestic, 933 International.

Universal College of Learning Technical school in Palmerston North, New Zealand

The Universal College of Learning (UCOL) is a New Zealand Government TEI (Polytechnic) located primarily in Palmerston North but has campuses also in Whanganui, Masterton and Levin. Dr Linda Sissons is the current Chief Executive.

NorthTec is a tertiary education provider in northern New Zealand, with its main campus in Raumanga, Whangarei. NorthTec provides programmes ranging from foundation, certificate, diploma and degree levels. Waikato Hospital is a major regional hospital in Hamilton, New Zealand. It provides specialised and emergency healthcare for the Midlands and Waikato area with patients referred there from feeder hospitals like Whakatāne, Lakes area, Tauranga, Thames, Tokoroa and Rotorua.

Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology is a New Zealand tertiary education institute with campuses in Rotorua, Tauranga, and other towns in the Bay of Plenty and South Waikato regions. It was formed in May 2016 after the amalgamation of Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and Waiariki Institute of Technology. Toi Ohomai is the third largest of the 16 ITPs in New Zealand.

Eastern Institute of Technology

The Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) is a government owned tertiary education institution with three campuses: Hawke’s Bay, Auckland, and Gisborne, New Zealand. Ara Institute of Canterbury New Zealand tertiary organisation

Ara Institute of Canterbury, often simply referred to as Ara, is an institute of technology in Canterbury, New Zealand. It was formed in 2016 from the merger of Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) and Aoraki Polytechnic.
