"War" is a song by American rapper Pop Smoke, featuring rapper Lil Tjay. The song was written by Pop Smoke, alongside Lil Tjay, alongside production from 808Melo and Swirv. It was released by Victor Victor Worldwide and Republic Records as a standalone single on October 4, 2019. The song was later included as a bonus track on Pop Smoke's second mixtape, Meet the Woo 2 (2020).

Contents

A drill and hip hop track, "War" sees Pop Smoke and Lil Tjay rap about intimidating people in the streets of New York. The song received positive reviews from music critics, with a number of them praising the lyrics. It peaked at number 100 on the Canadian Hot 100. A music video for the song was released on October 28, 2019, and was directed by JLShotThat. It features Pop Smoke and Lil Tjay rapping in a big mansion, riding on street bikes, performing live, and interrupting a show.

Background and composition

The song was written by Pop Smoke, known as Bashar Jackson, alongside Lil Tjay, known as Tione Merritt, Ellis Newton, known as Swirv, and 808Melo, known as Andre Loblack. 808Melo handled the song's production and programming. Colin Leonard mastered the song, while Fabian Marasciullo handled mixing alongside Thomas McLaren, who was credited as an assistant mixer. [2] "War" was released as a standalone single by Victor Victor Worldwide and Republic Records on October 4, 2019. Musically, "War" is a drill and hip hop song. [7] Writing for Billboard magazine, Michael Saponara stated that the song has Pop Smoke rap with "croaky rhymes", that are mixed with Lil Tjay's "high-pitched croon". He continued, saying Pop Smoke "stays intimidating to his detractors by calmly saying one call can have them disposed of". [8] Naimah Archibald-Powell of GRM Daily commented that the song "houses Pop Smoke's unique ad-libs, a catchy chorus and assertive bars". [7] Kemet High of XXL magazine stated that "on the sub side of the beat, Lil Tjay uses his voice to coat the foundation with an intoxicating hum. And on the surface, the timing of his bars is supreme and broken just enough to allow himself to come up for air before he dives back in". [9]

Reception

"War" has been met with mainly positive reviews from music critics. Writing for Spin magazine, Emily Tan called the song a "stream-worthy single". [10] The staff of XXL magazine described the song as "ominous". [11] Aron A. of HotNewHipHop stated that "Pop Smoke's deep, raspy voice contrasts Lil Tjay's more honeyed melodies", and said it "keeps things exciting throughout the track". [3] Saponara praised the song, saying Pop Smoke "stays war-ready", while opining that his chemistry with Lil Tjay "makes for an explosive combination". [8] Dhruva Balram of NME said that "Pop [Smoke's] croak perfectly complements Lil Tjay's rapid-fire rhymes, making for a frenzied combination". [12] Shamira Ibrahim of Vulture opined Lil Tjay's "trajectory has been nothing short or an astronomical climb" because of the song. [13] After Pop Smoke was murdered at the age of 20, "War" debuted at number 100 on the Canadian Hot 100 for the issue dated March 6, 2020, and lasted one week on the chart. [14]

Music video

A music video for "War" was released on October 28, 2019, and was directed by JLShotThat. [15] [16] The visual was shot in black and white, with it featuring Pop Smoke and Lil Tjay rapping their verses in a huge mansion, as scenes switch between them on street bikes, performing live, and shutting down a show. [7] [15] Torsten Ingvaldsen of Hypebeast mentioned the visual is "lightly edited", and commented that its "only hint of color are the various flame details that mark transitions throughout". [15] Archibald-Powell opined that the video is "sweet and simple". [7]

American drill rapper and songwriter Pop Smoke has released two studio albums, two mixtapes, three extended plays, nineteen music videos, twenty-eight singles, and three promotional singles. Pop Smoke began his music career in 2018 when visiting a Brooklyn recording studio with fellow rapper Jay Gwuapo. After Gwuapo got inebriated on drugs and fell asleep, Pop Smoke went into a booth to try rapping for the first time. He used a beat he got from English producer 808Melo and used American rapper Sheff G's song "Panic Part 3". He recorded his debut single titled "MPR ". Pop Smoke rose to fame with the release of his breakout single "Welcome to the Party" in April 2019. Two remixes of the song were later recorded, with one featuring Nicki Minaj and the other featuring Skepta.

Brooklyn drill is a regional subgenre of drill music, which is a subgenre of rap music. It centered in Brooklyn, New York, that began as derivative of the drill music scene in Chicago and later became derivative of UK drill with its 808 percussion and sliding notes by producers from the UK drill scene. Brooklyn drill emerged around 2014 with the single "Hot Nigga" from the rapper Bobby Shmurda. Other early contributors were Rowdy Rebel, Bam Bino, Money Millz, Dah Dah and Curly Savv.

Andre Michael Loblack, known professionally as 808Melo or 808MeloBeats, is a British record producer and songwriter from Ilford, East London. 808Melo is credited as a pioneer of UK drill and Brooklyn drill and is known for his bass heavy percussion. In 2019, he produced Pop Smoke's debut mixtape, Meet the Woo. He also produced most of the songs on Pop Smoke's sophomore mixtape, Meet the Woo 2, and he helped produce Pop Smoke's posthumous album Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 artist charts in July 2020. 808Melo has also produced songs for Travis Scott, Fivio Foreign, and Lil Tjay.

"Zoo York" is a song by American rapper Lil Tjay, released on May 8, 2020 from his third EP State of Emergency. It features American rappers Fivio Foreign and Pop Smoke, and was produced by Non Native and Bordeaux.

Majesty Blessed Moses, known professionally as Bizzy Banks, is an American rapper born and raised in Brooklyn, New York City. He is known for the hit single "30" with Pop Smoke which peaked at #97 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2021.
