The men's tournament of water polo at the 2012 Summer Olympics at London, Great Britain, began on 29 July and lasted until 12 August 2012. [1] All games were held at the Water Polo Arena.

Teams from twelve nations competed in the tournament and were seeded into two groups for the preliminary round. A total of 42 games were played, 30 of them in the preliminary round.

Dr. Gergely "Gergő" Kiss is a Hungarian former water polo player. He was considered to be one of the best left-handed water polo players of his time. Kiss is one of six male athletes who won three Olympic gold medals in water polo. He played on the right side, but moved to 2-meters on offense sometimes.

Tamás Kásás is a retired Hungarian water polo player.

Zoltán Szécsi is a Hungarian former water polo goalkeeper, who played on the gold medal squads at the 2000 Summer Olympics, 2004 Summer Olympics and 2008 Summer Olympics. He also competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Water polo has been part of the Summer Olympics program since the second games, in 1900. A women's water polo tournament was introduced for the 2000 Summer Olympics. Hungary has been the most successful country in men's tournament, while the United States is the only team to win multiple times at the women's tournament since its introduction. Italy is the first and only country to win both the men's and women's water polo tournaments.

The 1999 FINA Men's Water Polo World Cup was the eleventh World Cup.

The Hungary men's national water polo team represents Hungary in international men's water polo competitions and is controlled by the Hungarian Water Polo Association. Georgios Afroudakis is a Greek water polo player. He played in five consecutive Summer Olympics for his native country from 1996 to 2012. He is, jointly with Croat Igor Hinić and Hungarian Tamás Kásás, the tenth athlete to compete in water polo at five Olympics.
