Wesley Dean "Wes" Carr (born 14 September 1982), also recording as Buffalo Tales, is an Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, best known for winning the sixth season of Australian Idol in 2008. He released his first studio album, Simple Sum , independently in 2008 shortly before entering Australian Idol. After Idol, he signed a record deal with Sony Music Australia and released his debut single, "You". The song peaked at number one on the ARIA Singles Chart and was certified Gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). Carr's second studio album, The Way the World Looks , soon followed after. It reached number two on the ARIA Albums Chart and also achieved Gold certification. The second single "Feels Like Woah" peaked at number 14 and gained Gold certification. In June 2011, Carr released "Been a Long Time", the lead single from his third album. It peaked at number 33 on the ARIA Singles Chart. In November 2011, Carr announced that he was no longer with Sony and would be releasing his album independently. Early life

Wes Carr was born and raised in Gawler, South Australia, a town near the Barossa Valley on Adelaide's northern fringe. [5] Carr took classes five nights a week at the Johnny Young Talent School, but eventually left Adelaide to live with his father in Sydney at the age of fifteen. [5] From here on, Carr began his DIY education of the music industry, swapping time at school for time at bars, performing and meeting other musicians. [5] His first big gig was supporting Australian band Leonardo's Bride for their last gig at The Basement [5] Carr also played gigs with Missy Higgins, Lior, Paul Mac, Andrew Farriss of INXS and Don Walker of Cold Chisel. [5]

On 3 November 2003, Carr released his debut EP Rhythm to Fly, independently. [6] After Australian band Silverchair went into hiatus in 2003, Carr and Ben Gillies formed the band, Tambalane. [7] Carr and Gilles parted ways in 2005 when an "unpleasant power struggle" emerged between the two. [7] In 2006, Carr worked with C. J. Vanston in Los Angeles, where they co-wrote the song "Say My Name" for the film, For Your Consideration . [8] On 11 June 2008, Carr released his debut studio album, Simple Sum , independently.

Australian Idol

In 2008, Carr auditioned for the sixth season of Australian Idol . In the top five round, Carr sang Michael Jackson's "Black or White" and received two touchdowns, including one from judge Marcia Hines and guest judge Jermaine Jackson. He also received another touchdown in the top three round, from judge Ian Dickson and a TV throw from judge Kyle Sandilands also he has never being in the bottom 2 or bottom 3 appearance. On 23 November 2008, Carr was announced the winner of Australian Idol of 2008 with Luke Dickens becoming the runner-up. [9] As winner, Carr received a recording contract with Sony Music Australia, a car and $200,000 towards developing his craft. [9]

Recording career

2008–09: The Way the World Looks

After coming out of Australian Idol as the winner, Carr signed to Sony Music Australia. His winner's and debut single, "You" was released immediately for download following his win on 23 November 2008. The song peaked at number one on the ARIA Singles Chart [10] and was certified Gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), for shipments of 35,000 units. [11] Carr's second studio album, The Way the World Looks , was released on 20 March 2009. It debuted at number two on the ARIA Albums Chart [10] and also certified Gold. [12] "Feels Like Woah" was released as the album's second single on 13 February 2009. [13] The song peaked at number fourteen and certified Gold. [10] [14] "Fearless" and "Love Is an Animal" were released as the album's third and fourth singles, respectively.

In May 2009, Carr embarked on a national tour to perform songs from the album. The national tour, "The Way the World Looks LIVE", began on 27 May and ended on 12 July. [15] In September 2009, Carr served as a support act for Irish band The Script's Australian tour. [16] In October, Carr toured with Ian Moss on his national "Shake It Up Tour". The tour began on 8 October and ended on 19 December. [17] At the 2009 ARIA Music Awards, "You" was nominated for "Highest Selling Single", but lost to Jessica Mauboy's "Running Back". [18]

2011–present: Buffalo Tales and Roadtrip Confessions

Carr's third studio album was scheduled to be released in 2012. [19] In an interview with Adelaide Now, Carr said he wrote the album on his travels to Los Angeles, Nashville, London and Paris, and is full of "personal, candid stories." [20] Its lead single "Been a Long Time" was released for digital download on 10 June 2011. [21] The single peaked at number 33 on the ARIA Singles Chart. In November 2011, Carr announced on that he was no longer with Sony and would release his album independently. [1]

In August 2012, Carr released an EP titled Blood & Bone under the pseudonym Buffalo. [2] [3] This was later changed to Buffalo Tales, given a multitude of artists using the Buffalo moniker. In April 2013, Carr uploaded a cover of Diamonds by Rihanna. [22] The cover was praised on Twitter by Sia, one of the song's co-writers. [23] In May 2013, Carr released "Amsterdam" the lead single from his third studio album – and debut as Buffalo Tales – entitled Roadtrip Confessions. A video for "Amsterdam" was released on 5 June 2013. [24] The single did not chart. Roadtrip Confessions was released on 21 June 2013 and debuted at number 83 on the ARIA Album Chart. [4] The next single was "Puppet Strings".

In November 2016, Carr featured in the Catherine Britt single, "F U Cancer" [25] alongside Kasey Chambers, Beccy Cole, Lyn Bowtell, Josh Pyke and Wendy Matthews.

2018–present: Australiana

In December, Carr self-released a new studio album titled Australiana. The album is a covers album of songs performed by Australian artists.

Personal life

In February 2011, Carr announced in the Australian OK! magazine, that he was engaged to actress Charlotte Gregg. [26] Wes married Charlotte in April 2012, and their first child was born later that year. [27] [28] [29]

As part of the Idol franchise, Australian Idol originated from the reality program Pop Idol, which was created by British entertainment executive Simon Fuller. Rogue Traders is an Australian electronic rock band formed in Melbourne, Victoria in 2002 by mainstay James Ash on keyboards. In 1989, Ash met fellow original member Steve Davis in London while both were working as DJs. Before forming Rogue Traders, the pair had worked together on many projects, including the dance music act Union State, which relocated to Melbourne in 1992. The group's name comes from the 1999 drama film, Rogue Trader. Rockmelons, often referred to as the Rockies, were an Australian pop/dance/R&B group formed in 1983 in Sydney. Primary members are Bryon Jones, his brother Jonathon Jones and Raymond Medhurst. They had two Australian top five hit singles in the early 1990s with "Ain't No Sunshine" and "That Word (L.O.V.E.)", both sung by Deni Hines. The associated album, Form 1 Planet, peaked at number 3 on the ARIA albums chart in 1992, and was certified platinum in Australia.

Matthew John Corby is an Australian singer-songwriter. The Potbelleez are a three-member Irish-Australian electro-house and dance music group, which formed in 2003 as a duo by DJs Dave Goode and Jonny Sonic. In 2005 they were joined by rapper Blue MC on vocals and in 2006 by iKid on vocals. In October 2007, the group issued their breakthrough single, "Don't Hold Back", which peaked at No. 5 on the ARIA Singles Chart and, in 2011, it was certified 3× Platinum by ARIA. On 22 November 2008 their debut self-titled album was released, which reached No. 17 on the ARIA Albums Chart. On 27 May 2011 they issued a second studio album, Destination Now, which peaked at the same position. <i>Been Waiting</i> 2008 studio album by Jessica Mauboy

Been Waiting is the debut studio album by Australian recording artist Jessica Mauboy, released on 22 November 2008 by Sony Music Australia. While Mauboy was still a member of the girl group Young Divas, she began to work on what became Been Waiting. She co-wrote several of the album's songs and worked with many songwriters and producers, including Israel Cruz, Cutfather, Audius Mtawarira, Michael "Fingaz" Mugisha, Kwame Holland, Jonas Jeberg and Adam Reily, among others.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">The Temper Trap</span> Australian rock band

The Temper Trap are an Australian indie rock band formed in 2005 by Dougy Mandagi, Jonathon Aherne, and Toby Dundas. In 2008, the group relocated from Melbourne to London. The band released their debut album Conditions in June 2009 to favourable reviews and commercial success; it peaked at No. 9 on the ARIA Albums Chart and into the top 30 on the UK Albums Chart. Its lead single, "Sweet Disposition", peaked in the top 10 on the Belgian, Irish and UK Singles Charts and reached No. 14 on the ARIA Singles Chart. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2010 in November, The Temper Trap won Best Group and Most Popular Australian Single for "Sweet Disposition". Their eponymous second album was released in late May/early June 2012 under Liberation Music (AUS), Infectious Records (UK) and Glassnote Records (US). The album won the band Best Rock Album, and they also won Best Group at the 2012 ARIA Awards. In October 2013 guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto left the band, during the recording of the third album.

Casey Barnes is an Australian country rock singer-songwriter from Tasmania, Australia who is best known as a contestant on the seventh season of Australian Idol in 2009. Barnes won the ARIA Award for Best Country Album in 2022.

Angelique Frances Meunier, known professionally as Havana Brown or DJ Havana Brown, is an Australian DJ, singer, songwriter, record producer, and dancer. In 2008, Brown signed with Island Records Australia as a DJ for the record company and began releasing her Crave compilation album series, which featured remixes of songs from other artists. This led to her touring with international artists, including Britney Spears, Rihanna, the Pussycat Dolls, Chris Brown, and Enrique Iglesias.
