Wesley Grammar School formerly Wesley Boys High School, now nicknamed Wes G is a co-ed (mixed) mission school located in Dansoman in the Greater Accra region. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] Wesley Grammar is a missionary school. Though it is under Ghana Education Service, it is managed by the Methodist Church of Ghana. The school is situated on about 20 acres of land sharing campuses with Methodist University College and the Headquarters of the Methodist Church, Ghana.
In March 1956, the Accra circuit of the Methodist Church controlled by the Methodist Church in Accra decided to establish a Secondary School within the jurisdiction of the Accra District of the church to serve as a fulcrum for educating the young ones in the Methodist Tradition and in the acquisition of a sound intellectual base which would equip these young ones to assist in the development of the church and nation at large.
Through the high level of commitment and assiduity of the late Rev. J.E Addo, a Superintendent minister of the Methodist Church in Accra and ably supported by some staunch members of the church, Mr. Robert Dodoo and Mr E. Barnett Caulley, the aim of establishing such a school was brought to fruition within the foundation of a Secondary School named Wesley Boys High School under the headship of late Rev. L.H.S Osae Addo.
On 30 September 1957, The Methodist Missionary Trust Association with its registered office at 25 Marylebone London N.W Acting per their Trust and Lawful Attorneys, Reverend Geoffrey Thackeray Eddy of The Methodist Church, Ghana and Lawrence Alfred Cready of Komenda College had a vision. That vision was to acquire a landspace on their own for buildings of the then Wesley Grammar Secondary School, a school that had grown in the structure rapidly to the envy of her contemporary schools in the religion.
That vision of the Methodist Missionary Trust Association led them to Gbawe Kwatei Royal Family for the acquisition of a 72.341 Acre land at Ojokpakpo Hill Odorkor, Accra. They were led by Nii Aryee Pesemaku, The Gbese Mantse. The family readily granted the association the said land in line with its shared vision of having a befitting senior level educational edifice on its land. And that is what we are witnessing today, Wesley Grammar Senior High School and Methodist University College.
In June 1960, when the first two storey block was completed, the school moved to its present site. In the same year, the first batch of students to be produced by the school graduated after having written the Cambridge School Certificate Examination in December 1960.
The fortune of the school began to change phenomenally with its absorption into the Public Educational System in 1961. In 1965 another two storey block was built to house boys. Soon thereafter a similar block was constructed for the purpose of housing the girls. By the end of the 1960's the school had become a full fledged boarding institution with only a small number of Day students.
In 1985 however, in line with government policy, Wesley Grammar School was completely deboardinized with the view of increasing student intake. In 2000 under the headship of Very Rev. E.K Churcher the boarding system was gradually introduced again.
Presently, the school is partly day and partly boarding.
