When Harry Met Santa is a Christmas-themed advertisement for Posten Norge, the Norwegian postal service. It was released in November 2021 in advance of the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of sex between men in Norway in 2022. [1]
The advert – which gets its title from the 1989 romantic comedy film When Harry Met Sally... [2] – shows a man named Harry seeking a relationship with Santa Claus. Harry first sees Santa as when he delivers presents to his home one year, and their relationship develops year-on-year. Harry eventually writes a love letter to Santa, saying "all I want for Christmas is you", before he and Santa kiss each other. Santa then asks for help from Posten Norge, the Norwegian postal service, to deliver presents on his behalf on Christmas Eve, so he can spend more time with Harry, his new boyfriend. [3] [4] [5]
The advert quickly became a viral phenomenon worldwide, with most initial responses being "almost universally positive" and emotional in nature. [2] [6] [7] It received positive responses from Canadian MP Randall Garrison [8] and former U.S. ambassador to Denmark Rufus Gifford. [9]
However, the advert was criticised for sexualising Santa by some critics in the United Kingdom, such as Dawn Neesom (a columnist for the Daily Star , a tabloid newspaper) and Melanie Blake (a commentator and author). [10] Katie Edwards, a British author and academic, said in The Independent that such criticism was based on anti-gay tropes and the "villainisation of gay male sexuality", whereby two men kissing is seen as an inherently sexual act or behaviour, but a man and a woman kissing is not, as it is considered the norm by society. [11] László Kövér, the speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly, accused the advert of desecrating Christmas. [12]
The advert was not controversial in Norway and has been seen as an example of changing attitudes in the country as a result of campaigning by LGBT rights activists such as Kim Friele. This includes the decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1972 and the legalisation of same-sex marriage in 2009. [1]
Sex appeal in advertising is a common tactic employed to promote products and services. Research indicates that sexually appealing content, including imagery, is often used to shape or alter the consumer's perception of a brand, even if it is not directly related to the product or service being advertised. This approach, known as "sex sells," has become more prevalent among companies, leading to controversies surrounding the use of sexual campaigns in advertising.
Heteroflexibility is a form of a sexual orientation or situational sexual behavior characterized by minimal homosexual activity in an otherwise primarily heterosexual orientation, which may or may not distinguish it from bisexuality. It has been characterized as "mostly straight". Although sometimes equated with bi-curiosity to describe a broad continuum of sexual orientation between heterosexuality and bisexuality, other authors distinguish heteroflexibility as lacking the "wish to experiment with ... sexuality" implied by the bi-curious label. The corresponding situation in which homosexual activity predominates has also been described, termed homoflexibility.
Mrs. Claus is the legendary wife of Santa Claus, the Christmas gift-bringer in Western Christmas tradition.

In Star Trek Discovery, there were two same-sex marriages, while in Star Trek Enterprise there was a polyamorous character with three wives, each of whom had three husbands, with the marriages depicted as open to romantic and sexual relationships with others.

Jul or jol is the term used for the Christmas holiday season in Scandinavia and parts of Scotland. Originally, jul was the name of a month in the old Germanic calendar. The concept of jul as a period of time rather than a specific event prevailed in Scandinavia; in modern times, jul is a period of time stretching from the fourth Sunday before Christmas Eve, December 24, to (traditionally) mid-January at the date of Epiphany with the month of December and Christmas, and the week up to the New Year, as its highlight. The modern English yule and yuletide are cognates with this term.
In Christmas folklore and legends, Santa's Workshop is the workshop where Santa Claus and his elves live and make the toys and presents given out at Christmas. The exact location of Santa's workshop varies depending upon local culture, however it is generally believed to be somewhere around or on the North Pole. There are at least eight claimed locations for his workshop. For example, people in Canada send letters to Santa's Workshop at his North Pole location in Canada, with the unique postal code of "H0H 0H0". People in the United States believe the workshop is a sprawling commune located at the North Pole. Some people in the United Kingdom and Finland believe that Father Christmas' Workshop is located in Finland in Korvatunturi, Lapland. In addition to housing the factory where toys are either manufactured or distributed by the elves, the complex also houses the residence of Santa, his wife, companions, and all of the reindeer.
