Whitt is an unincorporated community in northwestern Parker County, Texas, United States. Whitt is located at the intersection of Farm Roads 2891 and 52, twenty miles northwest of Weathersford. [1]

History

The first settlers arrived in the mid-1870s, and it became a popular retail and social center for farmers due to its location on the stage line between Weathersford and Jacksboro. [2] Postal service began in 1877. [3] The Methodist Conference of Churches selected Whitt as its site for its district high school, Parker Institute. [4] In the mid-1880s, Whitt had an estimated 150 residents, three churches, a school, a weekly newspaper called the Whitt Moon, and twenty businesses. [5] Whitt continued to grow quickly and by 1900 it had a population of 500. [6] Whitt's population dwindled in the early 1900s due new railroads that bypassed many small towns in Parker County coupled with effects of the Great Depression. [7]

The Whitt Seminary was founded in 1880, when elders of the Christian Church at Whitt purchased five acres of land to build a community school. [8] The Seminary offered elementary through high school education with a robust music department, serving close to 200 students from local and surrounding communities. [9] The school served the community until 1990. [10] The old seminary building functioned as a Christian church until 1937, and was then converted into a community center. [11] The original Seminary school acreage was deeded to the Whitt Cemetery Association in 1976. [12] The Cemetery has a historical marker [13] and serves as an important cultural landmark in Whitt.

Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary is a Presbyterian seminary in Austin, Texas. It was founded in 1902 to provide pastors for the rapidly growing Presbyterian Church in the frontier Southwest. Thonton Rogers Sampson was the first president. It opened its doors to five students on October 1, 1902, at Ninth and Navasota Streets. The Seminary moved to its present location adjacent to The University of Texas campus in 1908. Ebenezer is an unincorporated community in Jasper County, Texas. Ebenezer is located near Texas Recreational Road 255 13 miles (21 km) northwest of Jasper. William P. M. and Mary Ann Dean founded the community by 1860 and established a Methodist church and cemetery by 1861. By the 1900s, Ebenezer also had a school. Both the school and the church closed by 1965; the church and cemetery were given historical markers in the 1980s.

Phillipsburg is an unincorporated community in south Washington County, in the U.S. state of Texas. The very small rural community is located along State Highway 36 (SH 36) south of Brenham. Aside from the names of two local roads, the name Phillipsburg is no longer marked on modern maps. The cemetery and Lutheran church, which is still open for worship, are actually slightly to the south in neighboring Austin County.
