William F. Tate IV is an American social scientist and higher education administrator currently serving as President of Rutgers University. He previously was the 28th president of Louisiana State University.
Tate received a Bachelor of Science in economics (with a minor in mathematical sciences) from Northern Illinois University,DeKalb,in 1982,a Master of Arts in teaching mathematics from the University of Texas,Dallas,in 1987,a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics education (with a minor in mathematical sciences and human development) from the University of Maryland,College Park,in 1991,and a Master of Psychiatric Epidemiology from Washington University in 2011,as well as a postdoctoral fellowship in social policy at the University of Wisconsin,Madison,from 1991 to 1992. [1] He served as dean of the Arts and Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis graduate school for 18 years,followed by a year at the University of South Carolina where he served as Provost,Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs,and USC Education Foundation Distinguished Professor. [2] He also held the William L. and Betty F. Adams Chair at Texas Christian University and served on the faculty at University of Wisconsin–Madison.[ citation needed ]
From 2021 to 2025,Tate was the 28th president of Louisiana State University. His tenure was criticized for instituting a hiring freeze and dropping diversity,equity,and inclusion initiatives. [2] Amid rumors that his dual roles of LSU President and Baton Rouge campus chancellor would be split,Tate was named as the next president of Rutgers University from July 1,2025 onward. [3]
He is a fellow and past president of the American Educational Research Association,and he was elected a member of the National Academy of Education in 2016. [4] [5] Tate was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Science in 2022. [6]
Tate was raised Catholic and is married to Kim Cash Tate,a popular Protestant YouTuber,singer,speaker,and writer. [7] [8] In 2015,Tate described his faith during a Veritas Forum event. [9]
Tate's background as a Black Catholic and the support of his family have been instrumental to his success and his drive to enhance life's opportunities for students of color.
