The 78th Assembly District of Wisconsin is one of 99 districts in the Wisconsin State Assembly. [1] Located in south-central Wisconsin, the district is entirely contained within central Dane County. It includes the south and roughly half of the east side of the city of Madison, along with the city of Monona and most of the village of McFarland. The district contains the Capital Springs State Recreation Area and the Alliant Energy Center. [2] The district is represented by Democrat Lisa Subeck, since January 2015. [3]

History

Notable former representatives of this district include Tammy Baldwin, who was later elected to the United States House of Representatives and is now a United States Senator, and Mark Pocan, who is the current congressman for Wisconsin's 2nd congressional district.

Prior to the Wisconsin Supreme Court overturning the 2020 district boundaries, District 47 was often used as one of the more extreme examples of Gerrymandering in the Wisconsin Legislature with the boundaries being compared to "swiss cheese".

It includes the village of Maple Bluff and downtown and east side areas of the city of Madison, including most of the Madison Isthmus. The district contains landmarks such as the Wisconsin State Capitol, Wisconsin Governor's Mansion, Monona Terrace, Warner Park, Lake View Sanatorium, and part of the campus of Madison Area Technical College. The district is represented by Democrat Francesca Hong, since January 2021. Representative Hong is the first—and, currently, the only—Asian America member of the Wisconsin Legislature.

The district contains all of the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus and Edgewood College, as well as landmarks such as the Wisconsin Historical Society, the State Street pedestrian mall, Camp Randall Stadium, the Kohl Center, the University of Wisconsin–Madison Arboretum, Henry Vilas Zoo, UW Health University Hospital, and historic Forest Hill Cemetery. The 81st Assembly District of Wisconsin is one of 99 districts in the Wisconsin State Assembly. Located in south-central Wisconsin, the district comprises the northwest corner of Dane County, including northwestern suburban and exurban Madison. It includes the city of Middleton and the villages of Black Earth, Dane, Mazomanie, and Waunakee. The 81st district also contains two wards on the far north side of the city of Madison which include the Cherokee Park, Sherman Village, North Lake Mendota, Lerdahl Park and Whitetail Ridge neighborhoods. The district also contains Governor Nelson State Park, Mendota Mental Health Institute and Middleton Municipal Airport. The district has been represented by Democrat Dave Considine since January 2015. As of the 2024 redistricting Considine no longer lives within the 81st district.

It includes the cities of Chippewa Falls and Menomonie and the parts of Eau Claire which fall in Chippewa County, along with the villages of Elk Mound and Lake Hallie. The district is represented by Republican Treig Pronschinske, since January 2017.
