Xymenopsis subnodosus is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Muricidae, the murex snails or rock snails. [1]
(Described as Fusus cancellinus) The white shell is fusiform. The whorls are convex. There are 16 ribs and 12 lirae (in the body whorl about24). The aperture is ovately oblong. The siphonal canal measures about the same length as the spire. The inner lip is thickened and toothed. [2]
This marine species occurs in the Strait of Magellan.
Heterobranchia, the heterobranchs, is a taxonomic clade of snails and slugs, which includes marine, aquatic and terrestrial gastropod mollusks.
Busycotypus canaliculatus, commonly known as the channeled whelk, is a very large predatory sea snail, a marine prosobranch gastropod, a busycon whelk, belonging to the family Busyconidae.
A whorl is a single, complete 360° revolution or turn in the spiral or whorled growth of a mollusc shell. A spiral configuration of the shell is found in numerous gastropods, but it is also found in shelled cephalopods including Nautilus, Spirula and the large extinct subclass of cephalopods known as the ammonites.
The umbilicus of a shell is the axially aligned, hollow cone-shaped space within the whorls of a coiled mollusc shell. The term umbilicus is often used in descriptions of gastropod shells, i.e. it is a feature present on the ventral side of many snail shells, including some species of sea snails, land snails, and freshwater snails.
The Trochidae, common name top-snails or top-shells, are a family of various sized sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs in the subclass Vetigastropoda. This family is commonly known as the top-snails because in many species the shell resembles a toy spinning top.
Calliostoma is a genus of small to medium-sized sea snails with gills and an operculum, marine gastropod molluscs within the family Calliostomatidae, the Calliostoma top snails. Previously this genus was placed within the family Trochidae. Calliostoma is the type genus of the family Calliostomatidae.
The gastropod shell is part of the body of a gastropod or snail, a kind of mollusc. The shell is an exoskeleton, which protects from predators, mechanical damage, and dehydration, but also serves for muscle attachment and calcium storage. Some gastropods appear shell-less (slugs) but may have a remnant within the mantle, or in some cases the shell is reduced such that the body cannot be retracted within it (semi-slug). Some snails also possess an operculum that seals the opening of the shell, known as the aperture, which provides further protection. The study of mollusc shells is known as conchology. The biological study of gastropods, and other molluscs in general, is malacology. Shell morphology terms vary by species group.
Pyramidella dolabrata, common name the "giant Atlantic pyram", is a somewhat variable species of small to medium-sized sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Pyramidellidae, the pyram snails.
Conus roseorapum is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Conidae, the cone snails and their allies.
Homalopoma sanguineum is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Colloniidae.
Nucella lamellosa, commonly known as the frilled dogwinkle or wrinkled purple whelk, is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Muricidae, the murex snails or rock snails. This species occurs in the eastern Pacific Ocean, its range extending in the intertidal zone from the Aleutian Islands southward to central California.
Xymenopsis muriciformis is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Muricidae, the murex snails or rock snails.
Xymenopsis is a genus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the subfamily Pagodulinae of the family Muricidae, the murex snails or rock snails.
In the shell of gastropod mollusks, the lip is the free margin of the peristome or aperture of the gastropod shell.
Conus denizi is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Conidae, the cone snails, cone shells or cones.
Conus gratacapii is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Conidae, the cone snails and their allies.
Cantharidus antipodum is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Trochidae, the top snails.
Halystina umberlee is a species of very small deep-water sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Seguenziidae.
Pagodulinae is a taxonomic subfamily of predatory sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Muricidae, the murex shells or rock shells.
Conus is a genus of predatory sea snails, or cone snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Conidae. Prior to 2009, it included all cone snail species but is now more precisely defined, as are other cone snail genera.
