Y: Marshals is an upcoming American television series set to air on CBS in 2026. Created by Taylor Sheridan, David C. Glasser, and Spencer Hudnut, it is both a spin-off and sequel to the neo-western series Yellowstone , created by Sheridan and Art Linson, which aired on Paramount Network from 2018 until 2023. The series sees Luke Grimes, Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty, and Brecken Merrill reprise their roles from Yellowstone, and shifts into a police procedural format. Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, and Brett Cullen also star. Y: Marshals is the fourth series in the Duttonverse and the first to air on a linear television network.
Y: Marshals is set to follow former U.S. Navy SEAL and rancher Kayce Dutton as he joins a specialized group of U.S. Marshals tasked with protecting Montana. [1]
In March 2025 it was reported that a spin-off of the Paramount Network series Yellowstone starring Luke Grimes and created by Taylor Sheridan, David C. Glasser, and Spencer Hudnut, was in development at CBS. [2] [3] The procedural program, tentatively titled Y: Marshals, was ordered in May from MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios for the 2025–26 television season. Hudnut signed on as showrunner and executive producer, with Grimes, Sheridan, Glasser, John Linson, Art Linson, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, also holding executive producer roles. [4] [5] Amy Reisenbach, the CBS Entertainment president, said the decision was made to air it on CBS rather than release it on Paramount+ (similar to other series from Sheridan) due to the success from the linear broadcasts of the parent show as well as Tulsa King . [6] With Sheridan known for producing high-budget series, [7] concerns were raised about how the show would on a broadcast network rather than cable. [8] Reisenbach responded saying that "we don't do cheap" and that creatively, the show would be similar to Yellowstone, assuring that a proper budget had been allocated. [9]
Grimes will reprise his role as Kayce Dutton. [10] He was initially approached about the spin-off just four months after production on the final season of Yellowstone wrapped, and was initially unsure about it being centered around his character, believing that his arc had been satisfactorily wrapped up. He ultimately decided to proceed once he heard the pitch. [11] [12] Also returning from Yellowstone, Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty, and Brecken Merrill were added as series regulars to play Thomas Rainwater, Mo, and Tate Dutton, respectively. [13] Cast members new to the franchise include Arielle Kebbel, portraying Belle, Ash Santos, playing Andrea, and Tatanka Means, as Miles, all in regular roles. [14] Logan Marshall-Green rounded out the main cast as Pete Calvin. [15] Additionally, Brett Cullen was cast in a recurring role as Harry Gifford. [16]
Principal photography is set to begin in late 2025, taking place in Summit County, Utah, with $52 million designated for production. Yellowstone also filmed its first three seasons in the same location, before its production was moved to Montana ahead of season four due to a lack of tax incentives that were subsequently increased due to the state losing production of that series. [17] [18]
Y: Marshals is set to begin airing in 2026 as a mid-season replacement on CBS. [19] It has been scheduled for Sunday's at 9:00 p.m. ET and will be the first series in the franchise to debut on a linear network. [20] Paramount Global Content Distribution will handle the show's distribution rights. [21]
