The Yadavindra Public School, Mohali, Punjab or YPS Mohali, near Chandigarh, is a private day-cum-boarding school based in Punjab. It was founded on 9 April 1979 by Late Maharani Mohinder Kaur of Patiala and Captain Amarinder Singh, former chief minister of Punjab. Every year on 9 April, the school celebrates founder's day. It is ranked amongst the top ten day-cum-boarding co-ed schools in the country as per the Education World rankings 2021-22. [1] The school is a member of the prestigious Indian Public Schools Conference. The school is based on the lines of Public Schools. The school is considered the oldest school of SAS Nagar District. The school is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (C.I.S.C.E.), New Delhi. [2] [3] [4]

History and Traditions

The Past

Yadavindra Public School, Mohali popularly called YPS Mohali was established by Late Maharani Mohinder Kaur, the last ruling Maharani of Patiala and Captain Amarinder Singh, the former Chief Minister of Punjab on 9th April 1979. This school is an offshoot of YPS Patiala located near Moti Bagh Palace in Patiala. [5] The school has a glorious past and has produced severable notable alumni. YPS is named after Yadavindra Singh, the last ruling Maharaja of Patiala. Its founder and first chairman was Raja Ram Partap Singh and founder principal Lt Col PS Satsangi, VSM (Retd).

Traditions

Dining Hall

The dining hall is one of the most loved places at school. The school has a unique tradition in the region to compulsorily serve meals and snacks to its day boarding and boarding students. The Dining hall serves more than 800 people at a single time.

Infrastructure

The school is spread across over 25 acres (10 ha) at the border of Chandigarh and Mohali.

Senior wing building

The building is the oldest section of the school. Prior to 2004, the school used only that building.

Junior school

This section opened in 2004 and houses all the primary classes from grade 1 through grade 5. Dr. Komal Kahlon was the first headmistress of this segment.

Kindergarten

The preschool section opened in 2006.

Boarding house

The school includes a separate hostel for boys and all students from classes 4-12 can avail this facility. The boarding house is equipped with air-conditioning facilities, and is a four-storey building. There are two separate boarding areas.

Dining hall

The dining hall is large enough to accommodate over 800 students at once. It is customary in the school to dine in and the school mess staff prepares the food. The staff prepares a weekly menu with different food every day. They also prepare dessert. For all the students and teachers, it is compulsory to have lunch prepared at school.

Academic hall

The School Academic Hall is one of the latest addition to the school's infrastructure. It is primarily used to hold conferences and inter-house activities.

Gymnasium Hall

Popularly Referred to as the Gym Hall, the Gym hall houses two indoor badminton wooden courts with the facility of Gym for the boarders.

Sports

The school has 2 football grounds, 2 cricket pitches, 2 hockey fields, two swimming pools, 2 tennis courts (turf and grass), table tennis, indoor badminton, 400 metre athletic track and athletic multi-sports facilities, squash courts, 2 volleyball, handball court, equistrian ground, 3 basketball courts, etc.

Sports

The school hosts and participates in multiple sports events. Annually, YPS hosts multiple IPSC National Sports tournaments [14] and students compete in sports such as: Athletics, Football, Hockey, Cricket, Basketball, Tennis, Squash, Swimming, Badminton, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Golf, Handball, Equestrian and many more. The school also hosts inter-house sports regularly for all age groups in boys and girls, in all sports. The school also hosts a week-long inter-house Annual Swimming Meet and inter-house multi-disciplinary Annual Athletic Meet, with a traditional marchpast by the houses on the opening and closing days of the event.

Co-Curricular

The school actively participates in regional, national and international competitions and has put up excellent results. It also participates in IPSC MUNs, debates, dramatics, music, dance, photography etc. YPS offers its students the The Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme and the National Cadet Corps India Scheme. The School also takes part in the 'IPSC Community Service Programme' held every year. The school has actively served for social causes at various schools, orphanages and centres across the region as a part of their community service. The school is an active member of the AFS Intercultural Programs and the students participate in the competitions and cultural exchanges often.

Every 3 months, the school publishes its newsletter, Oracle which covers the round-up of the achievements and news related to the school. The school year book, The Yadavindrian is published each year at the beginning of the new session

Yadavindra Public School, Mohali has been awarded multiple awards over the span of 40-plus years and is considered one of the top schools across the country.

Ranking

Considered one of the top ICSE Boarding Schools in northern India, YPS ranked 8th across India and 1st in Punjab for the year 2021-22 by the Education World. It similarly ranked 8th and 1st across Punjab for 2020-21. It was previously ranked as the 14th overall best school in India in Co-ed Day-cum-Boarding School category and it also ranked 14th in 2018–19.

The school's boarding house is headed by a boarding housemaster for each house and the Boarding-house captain and prefect. Two resident House Masters, assisted by Assistant House Masters, two Matrons and two 'Bal Sevikas' look after the Boarders' hygiene, clothing, and other requirements. The school's director is Maj Gen TPS Waraich VSM** (Retd.). The Board of Governors [18] constitute the school's governing body. Captain Amarinder Singh, former Chief Minister of Punjab is the Patron of the School. Raja Malvinder Singh is the Chairman. Various other members include officers of the Indian Armed Forces, various Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) and eminent advocates, etc.

He has also previously served as the Chief Minister of Punjab from 2002 to 2007. His father was the last Maharaja of the princely state of Patiala. He has also served in the Indian Army from 1963 to 1966. In 1980, he won a seat in the Lok Sabha for the first time. As of February 2021, Singh also serves as the chairman of the Punjab Urdu Academy. Captain Singh resigned as the Chief Minister of Punjab on 18 September 2021.

In 2014, he lost Lok Sabha election from Sangrur to Bhagwant Mann with a margin of 3,51,827 votes. In 2017, he won Sangrur constituency with margin of 30000 votes. In 2022, he lost to Narinder Kaur Bharaj of AAP, with margin of 36,430 votes. Neelkamal Puri is an Indian author, columnist and a college teacher. Born in Ludhiana, Punjab, she grew up in the princely state of Patiala, where she did her schooling from the Yadavindra Public School. She was one of the first 30 girls to be admitted to the school, the school being boys only before that. Since 1979, she has worked as a lecturer in English Literature at different colleges in Patiala and Chandigarh. She is currently teaching Literature and Media Studies at the Government College for Girls, Chandigarh.

Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium is a cricket stadium in Mullanpur, Mohali, Punjab. In March 2010, the Punjab Cricket Association announced that Mullanpur village of Mohali is going to have an international standard cricket stadium spread over 41.95 acre at cost of Rs 230 crore.

Punjabi University Guru Kashi Campus (PUGKC) is regional centre of Punjabi University, located at Talwandi Sabo. Its main constituents are Yadavindra College of Engineering, University School of Business Studies and Punjabi University Guru Kashi College.

Chandigarh Group of Colleges, Jhanjeri also known as is an I. K. Gujral Punjab Technical University affiliated college group located in Jhanjeri, near Chandigarh and Mohali. Even after sharing same brand name i.e. "Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC)" with CGC Landran and CGC Gharaun or Chandigarh University, the three colleges run under different administrations. CGC Jhanjeri was established in the year 2012 and run by Chandigarh Educational Society, Jhanjeri. Rashpal Singh Dhaliwal serves as the President of the college. The college has been approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and respective managing bodies of Govt. of India. The former Australian PM Tony Abbott visited the CGC Jhanjeri campus and met the college President.
