Yongjie Jessica Zhang is an American mechanical engineer. She is the George Tallman Ladd and Florence Barrett Ladd Professor of mechanical engineering and, by courtesy, of biomedical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. [1] She is the Editor-in-Chief of Engineering with Computers. [2]

Zhang's research involves geometric modeling, mesh generation, image processing, finite element method and isogeometric analysis. [1] She has applied her research for biomedicine and in particular for analysing blood vessels and neurons, [3] as well as to ship design [4] and the design of fiber-reinforced composite building materials. [5]

Education

Zhang is originally from Henan, China, [4] and earned a bachelor's degree in automotive engineering and a master's degree in engineering mechanics at Tsinghua University. She then moved to the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned a second master's degree in aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics, and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (now Oden Institute) [1] under the supervision of Chandrajit Bajaj. [6]

After staying on at the University of Texas for postdoctoral studies with Bajaj and Thomas J.R. Hughes, [6] she joined the mechanical engineering department at Carnegie Mellon in 2007. [1]

Recognition

Zhang is the recipient of Simons Visiting Professorship from Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach of Germany [7] (2019), US Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers [4] (2012), NSF CAREER Award (2012) and Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award (2010) [1] . The US Association for Computational Mechanics (USACM) awarded Zhang their Gallagher Young Investigator Medal (2013), "for pioneering research in high-fidelity geometric modeling and mesh generation with broad interdisciplinary finite element applications in computational biomedicine, material sciences and engineering". [6] At CMU, she received David P. Casasent Outstanding Research Award (2020), [8] George Tallman Ladd and Florence Barrett Ladd Professorship (2019), Clarence H. Adamson Career Faculty Fellow in Mechanical Engineering (2014), Donald L. & Rhonda Struminger Faculty Fellow (2011), and George Tallman Ladd Research Award (2010). [1] She is a Fellow of Solid Modeling Association [9] (SMA, 2021), American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering [10] (AIMBE, 2020), American Society of Mechanical Engineers [11] (ASME, 2019), USACM [12] (2019), and Executive Leadership in Academic Technology, Engineering and Science (ELATES) at Drexel [13] (2017-2018). She was elected to the 2023 Class of SIAM Fellows. [14]

Zhang served on the Executive Council of USACM and the General Council of International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM). [1] In USACM, she chaired the Technical Thrust Area of Isogeometric Analysis [1] and is the founding chair of the Female Researchers Group. [15] She chaired the Executive Committee of SMA where she initialized the Advisory Board and launched two new awards to recognize outstanding junior and mid-career researchers: Young Investigator Award and SMA Fellow. [1] In addition to the Editor-in-Chief of Engineering with Computers, she also serves on the editorial board or is an associate editor of several journals such as Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, [16] Computer-Aided Design [17] and Computer Aided Geometric Design. [18] She also serves as the program director for the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Activity Group on Geometric Design. [19]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mesh generation</span> Subdivision of space into cells

Mesh generation is the practice of creating a mesh, a subdivision of a continuous geometric space into discrete geometric and topological cells. Often these cells form a simplicial complex. Usually the cells partition the geometric input domain. Mesh cells are used as discrete local approximations of the larger domain. Meshes are created by computer algorithms, often with human guidance through a GUI, depending on the complexity of the domain and the type of mesh desired. A typical goal is to create a mesh that accurately captures the input domain geometry, with high-quality (well-shaped) cells, and without so many cells as to make subsequent calculations intractable. The mesh should also be fine in areas that are important for the subsequent calculations.

Thomas Joseph Robert Hughes is a Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics and currently holds the Computational and Applied Mathematics Chair (III) at the Oden Institute at The University of Texas at Austin. Hughes has been listed as an ISI Highly Cited Author in Engineering by the ISI Web of Knowledge, Thomson Scientific Company.

Charbel Farhat is the Vivian Church Hoff Professor of Aircraft Structures in the School of Engineering at Stanford University, where from 2008 to 2023, he chaired the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. From 2022 to 2023, he chaired this department as the inaugural James and Anna Marie Spilker Chair of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He is also Professor in the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering, and Director of the Stanford-King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology Center of Excellence for Aeronautics and Astronautics. Subra Suresh is an Indian-born American engineer, materials scientist, and academic leader. He is currently Professor at Large at Brown University and Vannevar Bush Professor of Engineering Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was Dean of the School of Engineering at MIT from 2007 to 2010 before being appointed as Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) by Barack Obama, where he served from 2010 to 2013. He was the president of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) from 2013 to 2017. Jian Ma is an American computer scientist and computational biologist. He is the Ray and Stephanie Lane Professor of Computational Biology in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. He is a faculty member in the Ray and Stephanie Lane Computational Biology Department. His lab develops machine learning algorithms to study the structure and function of the human genome and cellular organization and their implications for evolution, health and disease. During his Ph.D. and postdoc training, he developed algorithms to reconstruct the ancestral mammalian genome. His research group has recently pioneered a series of new machine learning methods for 3D epigenomics, comparative genomics, spatial genomics, and single-cell analysis. He received an NSF CAREER award in 2011. In 2020, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in Computer Science. He is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He leads an NIH 4D Nucleome Center to develop machine learning algorithms to better understand the cell nucleus. He is the Program Chair for RECOMB 2024.

Philip LeDuc is the William J. Brown Professor at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and the Founding Director of its Center for the Mechanics and Engineering of Cellular Systems. He is in the department of Mechanical Engineering, but also has appointments in Biological Sciences, Computational Biology, Biomedical Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering. LeDuc works at the intersection of mechanical engineering and biology.

Somnath Ghosh is the Michael G. Callas Chair Professor in the Department of Civil & Systems Engineering and a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). He is the founding director of the JHU Center for Integrated Structure-Materials Modeling and Simulation (CISMMS) and was the director of an Air Force Center of Excellence in Integrated Materials Modeling (CEIMM).
