Yuan Jie (719/723–772) was a Chinese poet and man of letters of the mid-Tang period. His courtesy name was Cishan,and he had several art names (see below).
He attained a jinshi degree in the imperial examination in 754,and served in several regional government posts before resigning in 769.
Among his most famous poems is the "Zei Tui Shi Guanli",which describes the state of the countryside following the An Lushan Rebellion,which he experienced first-hand. He also compiled a collection of poetry by his contemporaries,the Qie-zhong Ji ,and was noted for his prose compositions. Books 240 and 241 of the Quan Tangshi are devoted to his poetry.
Yuan Jie was born in either 719 [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] or 723, [5] in Wuchang (modern-day Wuhan,Hubei Province), [4] [5] Lu (modern Lushan County,Henan) [3] [5] or Henan (modern Luoyang,Henan Province). [2]
He attained a jinshi degree in the imperial examination in 754, [2] [5] and was involved in the putting down of the An Lushan Rebellion. [2] In 763 he was appointed governor of Dao Prefecture, [2] [3] and in 768 he moved to Rong Prefecture , [3] but during this time he came to resent the heavy taxes that his position forced him to levy on the peasants, [2] and in 769,following the death of his mother,he resigned his post. [2] [3]
His courtesy name was Cishan, [4] [5] [6] and his art names included Manlang, [2] [5] Aosou, [2] and Qiganzi. [5]
There is a ten-volume,Ming-era anthology of his poetry called the Yuan Cishan Ji (Chinese :元次山集; pinyin :Yuán Cìshān-jí; Wade–Giles :Yüan2 Tz'u4shan1 Chi1; lit. 'Yuan Cishan Anthology'). [2]
His wuyan gushi poem "Zei Tui Shi Guanli" (simplified Chinese :贼退示官吏; traditional Chinese :賊退示官吏; pinyin :zéi tuìshìguānlì),which he wrote while stationed in Dao Prefecture and which describes the state of society immediately following An Lushan's rebellion,was highly praised by Du Fu,and is seen as a forerunner of the works of Bai Juyi. He also compiled the Qie-zhong Ji (simplified Chinese :箧中集; traditional Chinese :篋中集; pinyin :Qiè-zhōng jí; Wade–Giles :Ch'ieh4-chung1 chi2; lit. 'Out of the Book-Bin'), [7] [4] a 760 collection of 24 poems by seven of his contemporaries,whose moral temper he admired but who did not hold official position. [7]
He is often listed alongside Xiao Yingshi and Li Hua as a forerunner of the gu wen (Chinese :古文; pinyin :gū-wén; Wade–Giles :ku1-wen2; lit. 'ancient prose') movement. [1]
Bai Juyi,courtesy name Letian (樂天),was a Chinese musician,poet,and politician during the Tang dynasty. Many of his poems concern his career or observations made about everyday life,including as governor of three different provinces. He achieved fame as a writer of verse in a low-key,near vernacular style that was popular throughout medieval East Asia.
Liu Zongyuan was a Chinese philosopher,poet,and politician who lived during the Tang Dynasty. Liu was born in present-day Yongji,Shanxi. Along with Han Yu,he was a founder of the Classical Prose Movement. He has been traditionally classed as one of the "Eight Great Prose Masters of the Tang and Song".
Li He was a Chinese poet of the mid-Tang dynasty. His courtesy name was Changji,and he is also known as Guicai and Shigui.
Shek Wing-cheung,better known by his stage name Shih Kien,Sek Kin,or Sek Gin or Shek Kin(Chinese:石堅;pinyin:ShíJiān;Jyutping:Sek6 Gin1),was a Hong Kong–based Chinese actor. Shih is best known for playing antagonists and villains in several early Hong Kong wuxia and martial arts films that dated back to the black-and-white period,and is most familiar to Western audiences for his portrayal of the primary villain,Han,in the 1973 martial arts film Enter the Dragon,which starred Bruce Lee.
Wang Changling was a major Tang dynasty poet. His courtesy name was Shaobo (少伯). He was originally from Taiyuan in present-day Shanxi province,according to the editors of the Three Hundred Tang Poems,although other sources claim that he was actually from Jiangning near modern-day Nanjing. After passing the prestigious jinshi examination,he became a secretarial official and later held other imperial positions,including that of an official posting to Sishui (汜水),in what is currently Xingyang,in Henan province. Near the end of his life he was appointed as a minister of Jiangning county. He died in the An Lushan Rebellion;between the 10th month of the 14th year of the Tianbao era and the second year of the Zhide era,he was executed by the Tang official LüQiuxiao (闾丘晓). When Lülater was sentenced to death by another official Zhang Hao (张镐),he pleaded for mercy,citing the fact that he had kin to take care of. Zhang's retort was,"Then,who's left to take care of Wang Changling's kin?". Lüwent silent after that.

Wei Yingwu,courtesy name Yibo (義博),art name Xizhai (西齋),was a Chinese poet of the Tang dynasty. Twelve of Wei Yingwu's poems were included in the influential Three Hundred Tang Poems anthology. He was also known by his honorific name Wei Suzhou (韋蘇州),which was bestowed upon him as a result of his service as the governor of Suzhou.
