Asia is one of the world's fastest-growing continents, with increasing urbanisation and a high growth rate for cities. Tokyo, in Japan, is the world's largest metropolitan area by population.

The populations of the given cities are obtained from five sources:

Out of these five sources, the highest estimate is shown in bold. The cities are ranked on the basis of their highest estimate of population. Some remarks:

The table is color-coded to show which region of Asia each city is in. The color-code key is as follows:

   East Asia
   West Asia

With twenty cities, East Asia accounts for half of cities under this list, with China having the most with fifteen cities, South Asia comes second with ten cities, seven of which are in India. Southeast Asia accounts for seven cities and West Asia with just four cities.

Hanyang District forms part of the urban core of and is one of 13 urban districts of the prefecture-level city of Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, China. Currently, it is a district and stands between the Han River and the Yangtze River, where the former drains into the latter. It is connected by bridges with its former sister cities, Hankou and Wuchang. Presently, on the left bank of the Yangtze, it borders the districts of Qiaokou to the north across the Han River, Jianghan to the northeast, Caidian to the southwest, and Dongxihu to the northwest; on the opposite bank it borders Wuchang and Hongshan. Baqiao District is one of 11 districts of the prefecture-level city of Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi Province, Northwest China. The district borders Gaoling District to the north, Lintong District to the northeast, Chang'an District to the southeast, Yanta and Xincheng Districts to the west, and Weiyang District to the northwest. The district spans an area of 332 square kilometres (128 sq mi), and has a population of 595,124 as of 2010.

Fangzheng County is a county of Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China, it is under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang. It borders Tonghe County to the north, Yilan County to the northeast, Yanshou County to the south, Bin County to the west, and Mulan County to the northwest, as well as the prefecture-level city of Mudanjiang to the northwest.

Mulan County is a county of Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China, it is under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang. It borders Tonghe County to the east, Fangzheng County to the southeast, Bin County to the south, and Bayan County to the west, as well as the prefecture-level city of Suihua to the north. The county is not related to Chinese figure Hua Mulan.

Yanshou County is a county of Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China, it is under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang. It borders Fangzheng County to the north, Shangzhi to the south, and Bin County to the northwest.

Tonghe County is under the administration of Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang province, People's Republic of China, located on the northern (left) bank of the Songhua River. It is 161 kilometres (100 mi) to the east of central Harbin, bordering Yilan County to the east, Fangzheng County to the south, Mulan County to the west, as well as the prefecture-level city of Yichun to the north.
