The Parumala Seminary is a Syrian Christian religious school located in Parumala, Thiruvalla, Pathanamthitta District, Kerala, India. It was established by Pulikkottil Joseph Mar Dionysious II and served as the seat of Metropolitan Geevarghese Mar Gregorios of Niranam diocese, the first Indian to be elevated as a saint by the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and the Syrian Orthodox Church. [1] The administrative annexe in India of the UK, Europe and Africa Malankara Orthodox Diocese, whose headquarters is in London, is in Parumala Seminary.

Malankara Metropolitan A title in Indian Christianity

Malankara Metropolitan is an ecclesiastical title given to the head of the East Syriac Church of Hendo(India), previously by the Government of Travancore and Cochin in South India. This title was awarded by a proclamation from the King of Travancore and the King of Cochin. The Prime jurisdiction regarding the temporal, ecclesiastical and spiritual administration of the Malankara Church is vested in the Malankara Metropolitan. The Malankara Metropolitan is the legal custodian of the Kottayam Old Seminary, interest of vattipanam and Other Common Community properties of Malankara Church.

Geevarghese Gregorios of Parumala

Saint Geevargese Mar Gregorios, popularly known as Parumala Thirumeni, was a Metropolitan of the Malankara Syrian Church. Parumala Thirumeni became the first person of Indian origin to be canonised as saint. In 1947, the Malankara Syrian Church declared Mar Gregorios as a saint, making him the first canonized Christian saint from India. In November 1987, the Syriac Orthodox Church canonized him as a saint.

Saint Geevarghese Mar Dionysius of Vattasseril popularly known as Vattasseril Thirumeni was the 15th Malankara Metropolitan (primate) of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. In 2003, the Church declared Mar Dionysius as a saint. He is known as 'The Great Luminary of Malankara Church', a title which the Church bestowed on him in recognition of his contribution to the Church.

He was enthroned as the 22nd Malankara Metropolitan on 14 October 2021 and as the 9th Catholicos of the Malankara Church on 15 October 2021 at St. Peter and St. Paul's Church, Parumala, succeeding Baselios Marthoma Paulose II.

The Order of St. Thomas is the highest honorary award given by the Indian Orthodox Church and named after St. Thomas the Apostle who founded the Church in India. It is reserved for heads of states and churches and awarded by the Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan, who is the primate of the Malankara Orthodox Church. The award is usually presented at large public gatherings held at different locations of importance to the Indian Orthodox Church within India.
