The Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (SSUS) is a Sanskrit university in India established in 1993 in Kalady, Kerala. The foundation stone for the university was laid by Bharathi Tirtha Mahaswamiji of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham. [1] SSUS provides education in Sanskrit, other Indian and Foreign languages, Social science and fine arts. It is accredited A+ by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). [2] The university has eight regional campuses across Kerala.

Campus

The university functions through eight campuses, the main one at Kalady (main campus) and regional campuses at Thiruvananthapuram, Panmana, Thuravoor, Ettumanoor, Tirur, Koyilandy and Payyannur. [3] [4] Most of these campuses are located in rural areas of the State, intending to serve people from disadvantaged backgrounds. More than ninety percent of the students and research scholars in the university are from economically and socially backward communities and families and more than seventy percent are women. [5]

Academics

Academic programmes

The university has twenty six PhD programmes, twenty MPhil programmes, twenty four PG programmes, ten UG programmes, two PgD programmes, one Diploma programme and nine certificate programmes offered by the twenty-four academic departments. The Choice Based Credit and Semester System (CBCSS) was introduced in 2005 in SSUS. [15] In 2018, the university implemented the system of Outcome Based Teaching, Learning and Evaluation (OBTLE) at the Post graduate level, becoming the first university in Kerala to introduce OBTLE. In 2021, the university becomes a part of KALNET, a shared platform for academic resources of libraries, developed by Kerala State Higher Education Council. [16] The university's postgraduate programme in Museology will be launched in 2021. [17]

Accreditation

The University Grants Commission has recognized the university with 2(f) status in 1994 and 12(B) status in 2005. [18] On 31 August 2021, the university was accredited by NAAC with A+ grade, the first University in Kerala and the first Sanskrit University in the country to earn the achievement. [19] In September 2014, the university was accredited by NAAC with A grade, the first University in Kerala to receive the grade in the first cycle of accreditation. [20]

The importance and antiquity of education in Kerala are underscored by the state's ranking as among the most literate in the country. The educational transformation of Kerala was triggered by the efforts of the Church Mission Society missionaries, who were the pioneers that promoted mass education in Kerala, in the early decades of the 19th century. The local dynastic precursors of modern-day Kerala—primarily the Travancore Royal Family, the Nair Service Society, Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam and Muslim Educational Society (MES)—also made significant contribution to the progress on education in Kerala. Local schools were known by the general word kalaris, some of which taught martial arts, but other village schools run by Ezhuthachans were for imparting general education. Christian missionaries and British rule brought the modern school education system to Kerala. Ezhuthu palli was the name used in earlier times. The word was derived from the schools run by the Buddhist monasteries. For centuries villages used to set up an ezhuthupally or ashan pallikoodam with one or two teachers. Students used to go this school from nearby areas and learn languages, literature, mathematics, grammar etc. After completing this students may continue study about specific subjects such as ayurveda, astrology, accounting etc. Censuses during 1800 shows that Travancore, Cochin, Kannur areas have many such schools. Even name list of ashans were used to be published along with the census.

Federal Institute of Science And Technology (FISAT) is a private engineering college and business school in Mookkannoor, Kerala, India, run by the Federal Bank Officers' Association Educational Society (FBOAES), established in 2002. It is an initiative of the Federal Bank Officers' Association (FBOA), the organisation representing the officers of the Federal Bank. FISAT is accredited by NBA and NAAC.

G. Gangadharan Nair is a Sanskrit scholar and a pioneer in the field of spoken Sanskrit. He has a PhD in Sanskrit grammar and Master of Arts degrees in Russian and Sanskrit. He has taught in Sanskrit colleges and universities. He was the research guide of Fathima Beevi, "the first Muslim lady to get her PhD in Vedanta ".

Dileesh Philip, also known as Dileesh Pothan is an Indian film director, actor and producer, who works in Malayalam cinema. He made his directorial debut with the 2016 comedy drama film Maheshinte Prathikaaram, starring Fahadh Faasil. The film received the Best Feature Film in Malayalam Award at the 64th National Film Awards. Pothan also won the Best Director Award at the 64th Filmfare Awards South.

Ramakrishna Pillai Ramachandran Nair is a retired Indian Administrative Service officer, who served as collector of Kannur and Kollam districts, managing director of Travancore-Cochin Chemicals, secretary to various departments, and finally as the Chief Secretary of Kerala state in different intervals. He was also the founding Vice Chancellor of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady. A prolific writer, he has also written many poems and essays in Sanskrit, Malayalam and English. His Sanskrit compositions, most of them being Carnatic kritis, praise more on the deities of Kerala temples, especially around Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam. Nair is credited with popularising many temples in Kerala.

Vijilesh Karayad is an Indian actor works in malayalam cinema, known for his performances in Maheshinte Prathikaaram, Varathan, kothth and Krishnankutty Pani Thudangi.

Aryambika S. V. is a Malayalam language poet from Kerala, India. She received several awards including Yuva Puraskar by Sahithya Akademi and Kanakasree Award by Kerala Sahitya Akademi.

Sharada, the second Malayalam women's magazines to be published in Kerala, was started in November 1904 from Thripunithura, Kochi. Sharada was edited by B. Kalyani Amma, T.C. Kalyani Amma and T. Ammukutty Amma. It was the first women's magazine to be edited by women in Kerala. K. Narayana Menon was the owner of the magazine and it was printed at Bharathi Vilasam Press.

Noonhil Vadakkemadathil Padmanabhan Unithiri is a multilingual scholar, author, researcher, poet, progressive thinker, translator and teacher from Kerala, India. He has authored around 200 books in Sanskrit, Malayalam and English languages including translated works.
