Pusat Bandar (English: City Centre) is the city centre of Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. It is home to a number of national landmarks, important government offices, and commercial and financial establishments.

Administration

The city centre is part of the municipal area of the capital. It is also one of the administrative villages within Mukim Kianggeh, a mukim of Brunei-Muara District,^[2] with a population of 204 in 2016.^[1] It has the postcode BA8611.^[3]

Tamu Kianggeh (Kianggeh Market) offers a selection of regional produce, including edible ferns and healing plants. Also available are prepared local delicacies and the day's catch from the fisherman.^[4]

Places of interest

The city centre is home to several sites with historical and cultural significance, including:^[5]

Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, one of the two state mosques of Brunei. In the 1960s and early 1970s, religious activities including Holy Qur'an readings were held in the lagoon, a replica of a 16th century mahligai or royal barge. The mosque has been hailed as Brunei's architectural triumph and has evolved into the nation's most identifiable landmark throughout time.
1968 Coronation Arch, to remember Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Coronation on 1 August 1968. The gate was once built in Kampong Sultan Lama, but in October 1993 it was moved to its current site.
Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien, where the declaration of Brunei's independence from the United Kingdom was proclaimed on 1 January 1984, and where national celebrations of Maulidur Rasu are still celebrated.
Cendera Lambang Kenangan, is an arch that stands 10 meters tall for the silver jubilee celebration of Bandar Seri Begawan's 25-year name conversion from Bandar Brunei. The Brunei Shell Company provided the Commemorative Emblem, whose construction cost more than B$60,000.^[6]
Brunei Energy Hub, a museum and former Royal Customs and Excise Building.
Lapau, a royal ceremonial hall. It was where the Constitution of Brunei was promulgated in 1959, as well as Hassanal Bolkiah was crowned as the 29th and current Sultan of Brunei.
Dewan Majlis, a former building for the Legislative Council of Brunei.
Lapau Lama (Old Lapau), former royal ceremonial hall and now a museum within the Brunei History Centre.
Raja Ayang Tomb, a tomb or an old Muslim cemetery may be seen right next to the General Post Office. It is the grave of a member of the Royal Family who was punished for disobeying Islamic traditions, according to elders' tales.
Bangunan Sekretariat (Secretariat Building), which serves as the headquarters for Radio Television Brunei (RTB) and former office for the State Secretary of Brunei.
Teng Yun Temple is the oldest still-standing Chinese temple in the country and has served as a shelter for devotees in the Chinese community ever since it was founded in the 1960s.^[7]
Timepiece Monument, to honor the visit of Tuanku Abdul Rahman, was constructed on 11 July 1959. This monument serves as a "Zero-Mile-Clock," marking the beginning of distances between Bandar Seri Begawan and other locations in Brunei. It is situated in the center of the city.
Royal Regalia Museum (Muzium Alat Kebesaran Diraja), which houses the regalia of the Bruneian royalty.
Istana Darussalam (Darussalam Palace), a former royal residence of Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the 28th Sultan of Brunei.
Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas (Golden Jubilee Crown Park) is a 12-hectare riverbank park next to Kampong Ayer, and the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque.^[8]
Bangunan Dewan Kemasyarakatan (Community Hall Building), which serves as the headquarters for Tabung Amanah Islam Brunei (TAIB).^[9]
Dermaga Diraja (The Royal Wharf), a former wharf renovated into a promenade that now also connects to the Mahkota Jubli Emas Park.^[10]
Mercu Dirgahayu 60 (60th Year Monument), a landmark worth B$1.5 million was sponsored and contributed by the private sector and the people and residents of the country. It symbolises the nation's devotion to the occasion, which coincides with the 60th birthday anniversary of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.^[11]

Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien was the 28th Sultan of Brunei, reigning from 1950 until his abdication from the throne in 1967.

Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni Hassanal Bolkiah is the eldest son of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and his wife Queen Saleha. He is the Crown Prince of Brunei Darussalam and is first in the line of succession to the Bruneian throne.

Pengiran Anak Mohammad Alam OBE was a nobleman and politician whom became the fourth Speaker of the Brunei Legislative Council, serving from 14 July 1971 until 30 November 1974. He was the father of Pengiran Anak Saleha, the queen consort of Hassanal Bolkiah, the current Sultan of Brunei. He was also the uncle and father-in-law of the Sultan. He was also a maternal grandfather of Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince.

Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas, initially known as Eco-Corridor Park, is a riverfront public park in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. The park was inaugurated on 22 October 2017 in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's accession to the throne as the 29th and current Sultan of Brunei.

The cemetery was formerly a Royal burial ground which known as Bukit Tinggi Royal Mausoleum which served as resting place for past Sultans of Brunei. The first Sultan of Brunei buried here was Sultan Saiful Rijal, the 7th Sultan of Brunei who died in 1581.

The Istana Darussalam is the former residence of Omar Ali Saifuddien III and birthplace of Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah. The palace is located at Jalan Darussalam, Sumbiling Lama, Brunei-Muara District, Brunei. The building has become a tourist attraction and currently under the protection of the Antiquities and Treasure Trove Act of the Museums Department.

The Old Lapau, formerly known as the Lapau, is a historical building in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. It was the former lapau or royal ceremonial hall prior to the existence of the current Lapau building. It was also where the Constitution of Brunei was promulgated in 1959. It now houses a museum pertaining to the Constitution.

Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah is the eldest daughter of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and Queen Saleha.

Pengiran Anak Damit was the Queen consort of Brunei as the wife of the 28th Sultan of Brunei, Omar Ali Saifuddien III.

Brunei Energy Hub Dermaga Diraja or Brunei Energy Hub in short, is the new name of the historic Royal Customs and Excise Building in Pusat Bandar, Brunei-Muara District, Brunei. The renovation project, which was entirely sponsored by Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP), has been transformed into Brunei-Muara's very own interactive oil and gas museum. The museum, which is located alongside the Royal Wharf and has the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha Bridge as a backdrop, seeks to act as a knowledge centre for the oil and gas sector and a venue to encourage the growth of Brunei's artistic scene.

Abbas Al-Sufri MVO was a nobleman, civil servant and courtier from Brunei who previously served as the acting personal secretary to Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III. He had a career in the government service of Brunei, in which he held a number of important positions such as being a member of the Privy Council of Brunei.

Pengiran Umar bin Pengiran Apong, sometimes spelled Omar Apong, was a nobleman and police officer who became the second Brunei local to be appointed Brunei's Commissioner of the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) after the Sultanate regained full independence from Great Britain on 1 January 1984, and later a member of the Royal Council.
