General elections were held in Liberia on 7 May 1867. The presidential election resulted in a victory for James Spriggs Payne of the Republican Party, [1] defeating Old Whig candidate Edward James Roye. [2] [3] The election was very close, with the House of Representatives required to decide the final outcome. [4]
Payne took office on 6 January 1868.
AlhajiGarxim Varmuyan Kromah was a Liberian journalist and later warlord and leader of the ULIMO faction during the First Liberian Civil War. He was a Muslim and member of the Mandingo ethnic group from Tusu Town, Quardu Gboni District, Lofa County. He attended St. Patrick's High School (1973).
