Motocross World Championship seasons

The 1960 Motocross World Championship was the 4th edition of the Motocross World Championship organized by the FIM and reserved for 500cc and 250cc motorcycles.

Summary

Team Husqvarna's Rolf Tibblin had an early lead in the championship by winning the first two Grand Prix races of the year however, the battle for the title came down to fellow Swedes Bill Nilsson (Husqvarna) and Sten Lundin (Monark). Nilsson prevailed by a narrow 2 point margin to claim the second 500cc world championship of his career. [1] [2] Dave Bickers riding for the Greeves factory racing team claimed the 250cc European Motocross Championship over his countryman, Jeff Smith. [3] [4]

Joël Robert was a Belgian professional motocross racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1962 to 1976 when the sport experienced a surge in popularity worldwide. A six-time world champion, Robert dominated the 250cc class for almost a decade when, he placed either first or second every year between 1964 and 1972 including, five consecutive world championships. In 1964, he was named the recipient of the Belgian National Sports Merit Award. He won a total of 50 Grand Prix races over his career, a record which stood for nearly 30 years.

Roger De Coster is a Belgian former professional motocross racer and current Motorsport Director of KTM and Husqvarna North America. Rolf Tibblin is a Swedish former professional motocross racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1957 to 1967, most prominently as a member of the Husqvarna factory racing team where he was a two-time two-time 500cc Motocross World Champion. Tibblin was part of a contingent of Swedish motorcyclists including; Bill Nilsson, Sten Lundin and Torsten Hallman who dominated the sport of motocross in the early 1960s. He was one of the first motocross competitors to express the importance of physical fitness training. Tibblin was inducted into the A.M.A. Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2008.

Bill Nilsson was a Swedish professional motocross racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1952 to 1967. Nilsson was the first 500 cc motocross world champion after winning the inaugural 1957 championship sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme.

David Geoffrey Bickers was an English professional motocross racer from Coddenham, Suffolk. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1959 to 1969. Bickers won two European motocross championships, and was a member of British motocross teams that won two Motocross des Nations events as well as two Trophée des Nations events. Bickers was awarded the Motorcycle News 'Man of the Year' award in 1960.
