This tournament was a part of 1984 Summer Olympics but counted as World Weightlifting Championships too. Only total medals counted for Olympic Games while Snatch and Clean & Jerk medals counts for World Weightlifting Championships. The Soviet-led boycott meant that the most dominant forces in weightlifting at the time, the USSR, Bulgaria and East Germany did not take part.

Ilya Aleksandrovich Ilyin is a retired Kazakhstani weightlifter who won four world championships. On 12 December, 2015 at the President's Cup in Grozny, Russia, Ilyin set two world records in the −105 kg class. He lifted 246 kg in the clean and jerk and 437 kg in the total. Ilyin was named IWF World Weightlifter of the Year four times: in 2005, 2006, 2014, and 2015.
The 2008 Asian Weightlifting Championships were held at Ishikawa Sports Center in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture Japan between April 26 and May 5 2008. It was the 39th men's and 20th women's championship. Much of the responsibility for the event lay with the Japan Weightlifting Association overlooked by the Asian Weightlifting Federation. The event had major significance for Asian weightlifters as the championships were the official qualifications for Weightlifting at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
