519 competitors from 87 nations participated. Due to not submitting their whereabouts information according to the IWF Anti-Doping Policy Bulgaria, Cyprus, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Sierra Leone and Sri Lanka were not allowed to participate in this year's edition. [1]
Ukrainian female weightlifter Olha Korobka failed a drugs test after the tournament and was disqualified from the bronze-medal position in the over 75 kg category. [2]
Weightlifting competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China were held from August 9 to August 19. Competitions were conducted at the Beihang University Gymnasium.

The 2022 World Weightlifting Championships was a weightlifting competition held in Bogotá, Colombia in December 2022. It was scheduled to be held in Chongqing, China but this changed in March 2022 as a result of COVID-19 measures in China. The new location was announced in April 2022. It was the first time Colombia hosted the World Weightlifting Championships.
The 2023 World Weightlifting Championships was a weightlifting competition held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 4 to 17 September 2023.
The weightlifting competitions at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are scheduled to run from 7 to 11 August at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. Several significant changes are instituted in the weightlifting program for Paris 2024, as the number of categories is trimmed from fourteen in Tokyo to ten. Furthermore, a total of 120 weightlifters, with an equal split between men and women, will compete in each of the ten weight classes, a massive drop from a full roster size of 196 at the previous Games.
