The Asian Badminton Championships 1985 took place from 15 to 21 April in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. [1] Both individual competitions (except Mixed doubles) and men's team competition were conducted. At the end of day, China took titles from three disciplines, Men's singles, Women's singles and Men's team competitions while South Korea won Men's doubles and Women's doubles events. [2] [3] [4]

Tan Chong Tee was a Chinese resistance fighter based in Singapore and Malaya during World War II. An accomplished badminton player before the war, he joined Force 136 around 1942 after Singapore fell to the Japanese. In 1944, while on a mission, Tan, along with Lim Bo Seng and other Force 136 members, was captured by the Japanese. He was subjected to torture during his captivity. After the war, he returned to playing badminton and later became a businessman.

Li Jiawei is a retired Chinese-born former Singaporean table tennis player, four-time Olympian and twice Olympic medalist. She trained in Beijing's famous Shichahai Sports School with Olympic medalist Zhang Yining. In 1995, she moved to Singapore and in the following year, she commenced her international career as a competitive table tennis player. She became a Singapore citizen at the age of 18 years under the Foreign Sports Talent Scheme.

Wong Peng Soon, was a Malayan/Singaporean badminton player who reigned as a top player in Malaya from the 1930s to the 1950s when it was a single nation. Noted for his smooth but powerful strokes and graceful footwork, he won the singles title seven times in Singapore and eight times in Malaya during this period, as well as being the top player in the All England, the Danish Open, the Indian and Philippines championships to name a few.

The Indonesia Open is an annual badminton tournament organized by the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) since 1982. It became part of the BWF Super Series tournament in 2007 and got the Super Series Premier status in 2011. Following the restructurisation to BWF World Tour, since 2018 it became one of only three tournaments to be granted Super 1000 level.

Datuk Tan Aik Huang is a Malaysian retired badminton player noted for his footwork and patience. He was a former All England Open champion, having won the men's singles title in 1966. Tan was a member of four Malaysian Thomas Cup teams including its world champion team of 1967. He also won numerous major international singles titles during the mid- and late 1960s including the Danish Open, the US Open, the Canadian Open, the Malaysian Open and the Singapore Open. Additionally, Tan holds the distinction of being the first Malaysian shuttler in the Commonwealth Games to win gold medals in two individual events. He is the elder brother of Tan Aik Mong.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ong Poh Lim</span> Malayan-Singaporean badminton player

Ong Poh Lim was a Malayan/Singaporean badminton player who had won numerous national and international titles from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. Known for his quickness and his aggressive, unorthodox playing style, Ong won many singles and doubles titles, including the All-England, Danish, French, Malayan, Singapore and Thomas Cup championships in the 1940s and 1950s. He also invented the backhand flick serve known as the “crocodile serve”, a tactic that had been routinely used in the modern game. Ong was a keen rival to badminton legend Wong Peng Soon.

Muljadi was a world class badminton player who represented Indonesia between 1963 and 1973.

The 1976 Asian Invitational Badminton Championships which was the first edition of Asian Invitational Championships took place in the month of March in Bangkok, Thailand. The individual competitions except Mixed doubles were conducted. At the end of day, Indonesia took titles from two disciplines, Men's singles and Men's doubles competitions while China won Women's singles and Malaysia secured Women's doubles title.

The 1978 Asian Invitational Badminton Championships which was the third edition of Asian Invitational Championships took place in the month of April in Peking, People's Republic of China.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Helen Heng</span> Singaporean badminton player

Helen Heng Siak Neo was a Singaporean badminton player who won numerous titles in the late 1940s to the mid 1950s. She was Singapore's badminton star of the 1950s and was the youngest winner of the Malaysia Open women's singles and doubles titles when she won it at the age of 15. Helen was also the most successful female shuttler in Singapore Open history with 15 titles and the first female player from Singapore to participate in the Uber Cup as part of the Malayan team in 1956.
